Last year our 3 frosh were the core of the team along with one senior - Jessie.
It would be easy to think of our team as still being dominated by younger players, as it was as recently as two-three weeks ago.
But now? Let's take a look.
C Yurtseven SENIOR
F Mosely SENIOR
F Pickett JUNIOR
G Allen SENIOR
G McClung SOPH

G Blair JUNIOR
C Wahab FROSH
F Muresan SENIOR
Our Hoyas are a very experienced team. OK, two of our five starters are on the floor with the team for the first time this year. But one of them, Yurt, spent an entire year practicing with the team last year. Allen has incredible leadership talents and a history of winning. Off the bench, Blair is in his third year with the team and reminding everyone (including himself) why he was a first team BE Rookie two years ago.
Mosely is playing like the senior he is ... one whose time has finally arrived. Exceeding all expectations for his contributions this year. Demonstrating leadership. McClung is the lone underclassman and is benefitting from the experience of those around him.
Finally, Ewing is in his third year as Head Coach. And his 18th year in coaching.
The downside is so many will depart after the season, but the upside is we have a very experienced team RIGHT NOW.
Not only do the seniors have years under their belts, they all know this is their last shot..at least in college. If they want to play in the NCAA Tournament, they have to do it now. If they want to win the BE and/or the BET - now is the time. Just watching the way they play, improved defense, moving the ball, finding the open man, boxing out and rebounding, controling their fouls, assisting on more than half of our buckets and fewer turnovers? These young men are taking the game very seriously, focusing intently, and clearly are listening to coach and staff.
It is easy to fret about all the "what ifs" and the outlook for recruiting, but the most important thing is the team that is on the floor RIGHT NOW.
The Big East season is going to be far more challening than our first 13 OOC games as a group, but GU has played some serious competition thus far and on the whole performed quite well.
Finally, speaking of experience, along with a few others I am among the most experienced Hoya fans on this board. (OK, I could have written "one of the old guys", but I opted not to!) And in my many years following our Hoyas, I can tell you this is one of the most impressive and enjoyable teams we have put on the floor. The outlook is bright indeed. I have a feeling the Big East season is going to be very rewarding for the team and for us fans.
HOYA SAXA!!
and Happy Holidays to all!
