I hope you and your families are safe and well during this challenging time. I write to you today to provide an update on the 2020-21 Georgetown Men’s Basketball season. Per the NCAA’s announcement in September, the college basketball season will begin on November 25. Coach Ewing and our student-athletes are ready to compete and excited for college basketball to return. Georgetown Athletics is working closely with the university, peer institutions, the BIG EAST Conference, the Washington, D.C. Department of Health, and the Washington, D.C. Mayor’s office to provide a safe environment for basketball competition this season. The health and welfare of our student-athletes, staff, campus community, and fans are our top priority. This year, the men’s basketball schedule will be announced in waves; the first portion was released today on GUHoyas.com. This season, the Hoyas will play four non-conference home games (including West Virginia in the BIG EAST/Big 12 Challenge) as well as an away game at Syracuse. Dates and times for four BIG EAST Conference games (two home and two away) have also been set. Originally, the team was scheduled to participate in the Paycom Wooden Legacy tournament in November, however, this event has been cancelled due to the pandemic. During the months of November and December, all Georgetown Men’s Basketball home games will be played in McDonough Arena. In accordance with Washington, D.C. regulations which limit the size of in-person gatherings, fans are regrettably not permitted to attend home games at this time. A determination has yet to be made on whether home games in January through March will be played in McDonough Arena or Capital One Arena, and whether these events will permit fans. We will continue to monitor public health guidance and make an announcement about these games at a later date. Even though fans will be unable to attend games to start the season, your support and engagement with the team will be more important this year than ever before. Please keep an eye on your email in the coming weeks for more information on how to support your Hoyas! We are grateful for your patience and understanding as we continue to make decisions in the best interest of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and community. Thank you for your support. Your dedication to our men’s basketball program, especially during this difficult time, is greatly appreciated. Hoya Saxa, Lee Reed Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

So the final OOC lineup is:
UMBC Navy WVU Coppin St. at Syracuse
Pretty balanced and given the difficulties of traveling/scheduling, think they did a pretty good job here.

Everyone please understand the reasoning behind not allowing fans. We ALL want desperately to see our team play live, but we can't, at least through December. Please note, too, that no media (beyond TV crew) will be allowed inside McDonough for these first 6 home games. Please do not take it as an effort to maintain mystery around the program. We all must do our part in society in hopes that restrictions are lifted in the near future.
Also, in response to the question on weekday gametimes, I'm fairly certain that the earlier starts are to allow for visiting teams to return home after the games. There is a major effort to minimize, if not eliminate, hotel stays for everyone.

So just to shed some light on the situation ...student athletes are really struggling with the challenges surrounding Covid. They are often isolated when not playing basketball, have to be tested three times a week, and are encouraged to stay away from family, refrain from leaving campus, etc.. it’s tough.
Heck, the conference is trying to figure out whether there will even be a season. The schedule beyond December has not been set and no one is excited about the prospect of spending three weeks in a bubble. What people need to understand is that these student athletes are making big sacrifices (far greater than the average student) and quite honestly it feels a little strange hearing adults complaining that they can’t watch games in person.

It is absolutely pathetic that anybody would have an expectation that they could see a game live given the exploding pandemic. I would not have a problem if they even cancelled basketball this season outright. Yes, I love watching the games, but trying to play college basketball in a pandemic that is worsening really makes no sense. I feel bad for those involved making this basketball season happen who probably have no desire to be putting themselves at risk.

Warning: Abe Simpson cloud-rant coming -- Amen on the sentiments expressed here! The Ivies have been ahead of the curve on cancelling fall and winter sports and Gtown should be at the vanguard as well. The only reason college sports are being held during this pandemic is unadulterated greed (see the ND football fiasco last weekend). The safety and survival of the Gtown community and its student-athletes should not be toyed with. The other thing that boils my blood is the student body parents clamoring for campus opening during the Spring. I guess their ROI calculation on tuition dollars vs. life of their Hoya daughter/son is too skewed by the "price" of remote instruction (never mind that this is a once in a century occurrence). Jumping off the soapbox now....

We always talk about sports being the tail that wags the dog, COVID has made it crystal clear. Colleges have entered an arms race to upgrade facilities and boost their profiles. Media contacts, sneaker endorsements and alumni contributions. $$$

I'm praying that Pickett saw my finger roll post. He needs to study the ice man George Gervin and finger roll!
