Pikiell has gotten a free ride from Rutgers fans to date, in part because he's had more success than Chris Ash (the former football coach, who was fired mid-season). It appears that RU is very close to announcing that Greg Schiano will be returning to Old Queens as Ash's replacement, and he will be welcomed back as a hero...which will put more scrutiny on Pikiell's on-court success (or lack thereof). The honeymoon for Pikiell is close to its end, and that's why Rutgers fans are beginning to question the basketball results.
RU should be able to recruit very well in New Jersey and surrounding locales, because of (a) its academic standing and (b) its association with the Big Ten Conference. Its failure to have success has been due, in no small part, to the inability/reluctance of the revenue-generating coaches to build bridges with successful NJ high school programs. Schiano was able to build those bridges. Ash was not. It's unclear whether Pikiell has been able to do so to date.

(If it were, Fordham would be the top choice of non-Ivy NYC talent.) It's about 1) visibility/access to the next level, 2) coaching, 3) faciities, and 4) results. Rutgers has existed in the shadows for 60 years, it doesn't provide a path to the NFL/NBA, its coaches in both sports have been less than memorable and those that are remembered are not done so fondly (Kevin Bannon, Fred Hill, Eddie Jordan). The RAC is wholly insufficient as a basketball facility. Results wise, Rutgers hasn't made the NCAA's in 28 years, an astounding number until you compare it with the aforementioned Fordham, which has made the NCAA's once since 1971.

The Digger Phelps season. I remember it well.
