Providence coach Ed Cooley made a bold move Saturday. He benched his best player so he could start his two biggest players side by side against No. 16 Butler. Then the struggling Friars saw the strategy pay off. Luwane Pipkins hit six straight free throws in the final minute, finished with 22 points and helped Providence hold on 65-61 for its first road victory over a ranked team in nearly three years. “My team’s desperate,” Cooley said. “I told them whoever is the most desperate wins most of the time, and I’m coaching the most desperate team in the country.” Is this bad Coach Cooley?

I'm a big supporter of Coach Cooley (as may have been noted from my regular criticism of the one poster who constantly pops up upon every Providence loss), but I would say if this is true, it's only because Butler and Xavier were forced to replace coaches during that time period.

Even with that, I'm taking coach Willard every time. No disrespect to Cooley as I think he's a solid coach, but Willard is a better coach. He rebuilt that program with a solid class after securing Whitehead via hiring his high school coach I think. That strategy only works with a quality player and a very good coach and it worked to perfection there. Willard has done incredible things at Seton Hall. I think you nailed it on Butler and Xavier, too. More so Xavier, but I agree.

Willard is truly a unique example. He spent five seasons at Seton Hall and did not do much of anything. Even with Whitehead, during his freshman season, Seton Hall still went 6-12. Since then, Willard has had a ton of success, obviously.
The reason it's unique is that in the modern game, it is extremely rare for a coach to have 5 poor seasons followed by success (not to mention that 5 poor seasons usually leads to getting fired), but not only did Willard turn things around, but he has managed to keep up that success even after the Whitehead class graduated. He went from being on the cusp of being fired to a well regarded coach in a couple of seasons.
One thing I will always appreciate about Willard is his letting Tyler Adams score on Senior Day at Georgetown. It was a classy move.

Ever since that game/season, Seton Hall has had a 9-9 or better conference record with an NCAA tournament berth in every season, meanwhile Georgetown has had a 9-9 or worse conference record and hasn't been back to the NCAA tournament.

That 14 SOS could end up being really helpful if we give ourselves a shot the rest of the way

That 14 SOS could end up being really helpful if we give ourselves a shot the rest of the way Sure could...and it's not likely to get meaningfully worse. The other numbers show just how close we are. Win the next two out of three and we are almost definitely on the right side of the bubble at that point. Win one out of three and we probably are on the wrong side but in striking difference with plenty of shots left. It'd sure help if StJ (and OK St and SMU) could win some games.....SMU is barely a Tier 1 win and the StJ away win is barely Tier 2 (almost tier 1). Ok St with a couple wins could sneak into Tier 1 but that seems less likely.

And thats before we play Seton Hall. As point of reference, Providence has a 18 SOS but a 111 Non conference SOS, and we had a non conference SOS in 50s, so I am sure we will have . top 10/top 15 SOS when its all said and done.

Also, there are plenty of schools with suspect profiles in a month that are in now, if BYU and st marys (7/8 seeds) have only one Q1 win, even losing to Gonzaga in a conference final...are they in?

The latest Bracket Matrix update from yesterday, including our SJU win, has us as 5th team out. BYU/St. Mary's look more like 9/10s; to your point, they don't have as much margin of error as you'd think. Hoyas could easily find themselves on the right side of the bubble if they can pull off a win tomorrow night. www.bracketmatrix.com/

Yeah but don't forget SH is without McKnight...he is definitely 2nd in importance on their team....
