I’m happy for him. I didn’t think it would have been a good idea for him to jump into a full assistant role at a high major, but hopefully this is the first step on the path to a long and successful coaching career. One of my favorite Hoyas.

One of my favorite Hoyas. Good for him. Hopefully Freeman can learn and succeed in this role and perhaps someday a Hoyas' fit will make sense. While I'd love to see Freeman on staff if warranted, I always thought guys like him needed experience at other places first before jumping straight to Georgetown. This isn't a reflection on Freeman at all - I would say the same about anybody looking for an assistant job at Georgetown. I think, barring special circumstances (like a super fantastic high school recruiter, for example), it doesn't make sense for a school like Georgetown to hire assistants without previous assistant experience.

Must we do this in every thread? Yesterday, I actually started to write a post about the wisdom of joining this staff as one’s first college job, and then deleted it for this reason. And yet here we are. It’s almost unprecedented for a D1 basketball coach to survive 0-20, so we truly are in uncharted waters. The fact that Pat is still the coach provides some sense of job security and it’s nearly impossible to match last season’s record. Only way to go is up when you’re in the basement. Appears that Ewing may get to ride out his contract. It still must be a tough pitch to sell kids off of our performance and lack of regular NCAA appearances. I’m still hopeful that the new assistants can overcome the negative recruiting and land some high school talent, some local. Freeman would have been an interesting hire. Star local player, McAA, star at GU, current ties to DMV, fan favorite, etc. Not sure if he and Wright burnt some bridges by being to critical. By being critical, I mean speaking the truth and making suggestions. Not sure the program handles that well.

Very happy for Austin. Hope this is a stepping stone to an assistant coach role at Georgetown sooner rather than later. I bet he’ll really kill it on the recruiting front, Austin has a lot of clout in the DMV and there is so much high school talent there that might not be high major coming out the gates but still will be productive college players.

Agree. Who wouldn't love a skilled former player with DMV ties and a track record of success as a member of a CBB staff deciding to return home? Fingers crossed. Austin may have some bitterness toward GU the institution/program but, he no doubt knows that his fellow Hoyas love and support him.

Given that he’s on Morgan State he’s keeping it in the family since he’s joining Broadus. I hope this is a stepping stone for an eventual gig here and he’s just building up a resume to return to the Hoyas.

If Austin Freeman's goal is to coach in college, he's smart to make the move from high school to college in this role. I imagine after a year or two, he can transition to an assistant role either at Morgan State or elsewhere. While the Wright/Freeman years never had NCAA success, I really loved those teams and generally those teams were filled with good guys. I always look fondly on those teams, even if they frustrated us in November.

Yes, not sure why I had November on the mind! You got JTIII’s teams mixed up with Ewing’s teams.

Yes, not sure why I had November on the mind! You got JTIII’s teams mixed up with Ewing’s teams. Based on last year's results, it would be November to March.
