Amazing defensive play by Mac. In BE play however, that becomes a pump fake and a layup. I'm not sure I understand this--why would Akinjo pump fake and lay it in during BE play but not in Kenner?

The same reason defense is played in the BE but not in Kenner. Coaching, more discipline, less risk taking in general.

In BE play, they'd have called a foul on Mac on the first step of Akinjo's drive. The hand foul calls have gotten that ridiculous.
It's great to see Akinjo and Mac pushing each other. We need as much of that throughout the team that we can get. Mac and Akinjo did the same last summer. Hopefully, that is contagious in practices and, from the outside, it seems like it is. I love the change in culture that seems to have been happening over the past 2 years. I believe it'll lead to wins.

I meant before that. There are clips of them going at one another knowing they'd be teammates very shortly.

Agree with Casual’s assessment aside from two fairly big asterisks: *I think Allen is a tragic offensive player. He’s a good (not great passer) who is ZERO threat to score shooting. Given that we aren’t a great shooting team to begin with, I think he’ll get fewer mpg and not more than you would expect from a 5th year. He’s solid defensively, but by no means a clamp god. I’m just not buying at present.
*Nobody plays much defense in Kenner, but Omer’s defensive effort (or complete lack thereof yesterday) is a little concerning. The disparity in intensity between the first two games and the Mac vs. Akinjo game was truly staggering. It’s like there wasn’t any energy in the bldg until that third game dropped. And LeBlanc was clearly the MVP of that showdown. Between Akinjo, Mac, LeBlanc and Alexander, the Hoyas will snarl and gallop over 2/3 of their opponents in an extended transition wave this season.
Love Yurt, but he’s got a ways to go in the D and intensity department to keep up with the young dogs. That is absolutely going to be the personality of this team - and it’s going to be a joy to watch - 40 minutes of come fly with me and pushing 90 every night. Pretty smart imo on Ewing’s part, because it’s not only way closer to NBA game, it’s really fun to play and watch. It’s the anti-JT3 ball in terms of recruiting. Recruits are going to feel like they’re watching UNC not old school Big East. But my guess is the standard center in the system going forward is going to look more like Q or Tim - long, sleek rim-runner who is a terror blocking shots and catching oops and way less like Yurt (slower, more skilled, conventional, old school C).

Good observations but remember — Texas Tech and Virginia just played in the NCAA Championship game and neither play anything close to Roy Williams “roll out the ball and play” style ball. If you look at what Texas Tech is now starting to bring in recruiting wise— it is winning that will bring the recruits — not simply style of play. To “out-UNC” a team like UNC, you have to be able to recruit that caliber athlete.

Just a heads up to take note of the author when reading stuff on Casual Hoya. All the Kenner write ups are by vv83 who posts here too and does a great job of scouting nearly all of the Kenner games.

Totally agree on Allen offensively, I wasn't expecting much, but he has absolutely zero offensive game. I would be surprised if he scores 10 points in a single game this year. Loved what I saw from Alexander, needs to find his role as a slasher/glass getter and not look for his outside shot too often, but it's Kenner so he was jacking. Hard to assess Yurt against Muresan, but he clearly has a very polished offensive game. Want to see him against some of the better/more physical bigs in Kenner. Any idea why Wahab didn't play yesterday? Would have liked to see him against that team with Huff and those guys.

When I saw him last weekend he played fast, pushed the pace, ran the offense, and had good shot selection. I still see him as the third best guard on the roster, and that’s going to be a 15-20 minute per game role for this team. The guy scored in double digits in 7 games last season for UCF.

Allen will need to be pretty good to play ahead of Mosley and Blair. They are the presumptive 3-4 guards heading into the season. Allen is crashing the party. Mosely’s role seems to be pretty well cemented. I think Ewing has struggled to figure out how to use Blair and Blair has struggled to prove himself worthy to earn more and critical minutes. I have maintained a hope (perhaps mistakenly) that Blair will develop into a great bench player providing sharp shooting off the bench. This is his year to step up (and keep a guy like Allen behind him on the depth chart).
