Don't have time to get into all the details yet but I arrived home to find my ordered copy of the Lindy's Sports preview waiting for me. Here are some quick details. Georgetown is predicted to finish #6 in the Big East. The order goes 1-Villanova 2-Seton Hall 3-Xavier 4-Marquette 5-Creighton 6-Gtown 7-Providence 8-Butler 9-St. John's 10-DePaul The Hoyas are pre-season ranked #40 in the nation and are expected to make it to the NCAA tourney and end up as a one and done in tourney play. Seven BE teams are predicted to make the Big Dance. This BIG EAST prediction seems a little lazy. This Villanova squad is the most vulnerable team since the NEW BIG EAST. Seton Hall should be consensus favorite. Marquette & Creighton finishing ahead of Georgetown seems strange to me. I doubt Providence finishes as low as 7th. I do agree with seven teams making the NCAA Tournament...

Last year the BE was hard to predict because of the loss of talent and the unproven youth coming in to the league. This year it is hard to predict because of the return of so much talent, with some exceptions. Last year I figured anywhere from 3rd to 9th for the Hoyas and expected it to be somewhere in the middle. Hard to be upset about any predictions this year that have the Hoyas in the 2-8 range. Until we see how the 7 new players (counting Yurtseven) blend in with the returning players I am not certain how anyone can be confident where the Hoyas finish. More talent for certain, but that does not always translate into a better team. Up to the coaches and the players to make it work.

I, and I think many of us, expect better than a 6th place finish this year. Way too much talent and athleticism. This is the first real PE team. If they don't finish higher than 6th then I would seriously question our coaching staff.

I hop to finally get around to posting some detailed pre-season thoughts this weekend. For now let me concentrate on Creighton.
Creighton swept Georgetown last season and managed to go 9-9 in conference play which helped them to a four-way tie for third place in the Big East along with Seton Hall, Xavier and Georgetown. The first game between them Georgetown should have won at home, the Hoyas had the lead very late in the game. The second contest at Creighton occurred during the point of the season in which Govan was descending in terms of his results on the offensive side of the floor and he was pretty much a non-factor in that matchup.
Creighton averaged 78.8 points per game which was second in the Big East to Georgetown’s 79.9. Georgetown justifiably got criticized for its porous defense which gave up 78.1 points per contest. Creighton did a better job on that front by giving up 73.2. Creighton’s main weakness appeared to be rebounding where they finished second to last in the Big East overall. Georgetown overall was #1 in the conference. But if a more accurate stat in one’s mind is rebound margin, Georgetown would drop to fourth in the conference while Creighton moves up a couple of notched to seventh.
So lets say these two teams remain the best scoring teams in the conference. My question would be which of these teams (by way of departures, new arrivals or maturation) has a better chance of shoring up their worst deficiencies? Did Creighton get better on defense and most importantly will it improve a lot on the boards? Will Georgetown solve its defensive issues to a greater extent than Creighton handles its rebounding problems?
I can really only make an educated guess about Georgetown. It lost arguably its two weakest defenders, at least in the frontcourt, in Govan and Mourning. It brings in four essentially 7-footers all of them, based on past performances, witness accounts and what we saw of them in the Bahamas, more athletic and better shotblockers. The Hoyas bring in two long wings with a reputation of playing good defense. And their at times defensively vulnerable backcourt are no longer freshmen after having complied a season’s worth of experience. Its very conceivable as well that the Georgetown will not just finish #1 overall rebounding in the Big East , but #1 in rebound margin too.
Now this can be seen as a biased take. Its quite possible that Creighton does an equally if not better job at eliminating its deficiencies from last season. But, as is the case will Georgetown, Creighton will have to prove it has solved these issues, no one can just assume it has.
So why is it that Creighton, who lost its starting big man too, is presumed to be ahead of Georgetown in most of these of these early season predictions? I mean how does one justify, as in the case of 3MW, the discrepancy of Creighton at #2 with Georgetown at #8? That's nuts. The only way you have "analysis" that leads to such a conclusion is if their is some sort of bias element in the equation.

I agree that #8 is probably low, but the writer does provide some interesting commentary. I forgot to add the comments are overall lazy. Granted I can't expect with their limited resources for 3MW to have their ears to the ground enough to add anything insightful regarding Wilson, Ighoefe and Wagner. I also guess it was expecting too much for them to discuss Blair even a bit despite him being a junior who takes those three-point shots that they so value as being good shots. But to presume that Pickett and Mosely would platoon the three? Not giving Pickett any benefit of the doubt of rebounding as they would for other dudes on other teams? To place Alexander's name on the line regarding key newcomers but to not write anything about him, including how he could be a big help at the three if other players falter? To act as if a relatively highly regarded freshman big like Wahab doesn't exist as a quality backup as well as a possibly additional defensive cog for the team? That's inexcusably lazy.

I think those guys work pretty hard at this stuff and generally it's on the money, but this one was a bit sloppy. Originally they had Carter still on the roster and no sign of Alexander until it was pointed out.

Originally they had Carter still on the roster and no sign of Alexander until it was pointed out. That’s very telling if so. Backs up my theory about an overall laziness regarding the Hoyas. They have no idea about the players on the team other than our sophomores, Yurtseven and Pickett. The rest are just names they probably stare at blankly.

Continuing the Lindy’s College PreviewFirst thing’s first. There is a Hoya on the cover, James Akinjo. There are also guys from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pitt and VCU. (Okay, first rant. Why is Pitt represented? The cover is crowded enough so wouldn’t it be better for Pitt to be on the cover for more Northern regions? I get that its on the other side of Pennsylvania but shouldn’t it share a cover with Philadelphia school like Villanova and Temple ?). Lindsy’s list its top ten Preseason teams on the cover. It goes: 1-Michigan State 2-Louisville 3-Kentucky 4-Duke 5-North Carolina 6-Kansas 7-Florida 8-Gonzaga 9-Maryland 10-Texas TechThe remaining Top 25 goes as: 11-Villanova 12-Baylor 13-Memphis 14-Seton Hall 15-Virginia 16-Colorado 17-Ohio State 18-LSU 19-Xavier 20-Washington 21-Liberty 22-Mississippi State 23-Utah State 24-Saint Marys 25-Arizona
Other notable teams: 26-Marquette 28- Creighton 29-VCU 40-GeorgetownThe magazine rates the Big East as the third best conference going into this season, behind the SEC and ACC respectively and ahead of the Big Ten. Under the Rumble Ready category (category devoted to transfers): Omer Yurtseven, Georgetown – Can the 7-footer bring back the marquee big man to a program with a history of success at the center position? Yurtseven had impressive numbers his sophomore season at N.C. State putting up averages of 13.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game in just 23.8 minutes of action.Also…. Koby McEwen, Marquette – Originally attended Utah State, where he was the Mountain West Freshmen of the Year and a third-team All-Mountain West selection during his sophomore year. The 6-4 guard averaged 15 points, 5.2 rebounds and .1 assists in two seasons with the Aggies and arrives just in time after the Hauser brothers blew town.( Sidenote: I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I’m more impressed with McEwen’s resume than Luwane Pipkins ). Georgetown vs Texas is considered one of the top 25 Best Matchups To Start the Season Lindy’s All-American TeamsFirstCassius Winston Mich. State Markus Howard – Marquette Jarron Cumberland – Cincinnati Reggie Perry – Miss State Charles Bassey – Western KentuckySecondTre Jones – Duke Nico Mannion – Arizona Yoeli Childs – BYU Jordan Nwora – Louisville Isaiah Stewart – Washington Third Cole Anthony – UNC Myles Powell – Seton Hall Lamar Stevens – Penn State Kerry Blackshear – Florida Vernon Carey – Duke
( Sidenote: Well these teams are not exactly predictable. I feel Yurtseven can make his way on these teams at the end of season. And the way virtually every site/blog/publication talk up Blackshear you would think Va Tech won the championship with him last season. I think the main difference why Blackshear gets far more love is because he didn’t take a year off). Lindy’s Top 150This list is compiled by Frank Burlison as well as regional editors and writers Random mentions: #2 – M. Howard #4 – Tre Jones #8 – Vernon Carey #14 - Myles Powell #20 – Lamar Stevens #22 – Jalen Smith – Maryland #29 – Kamar Baldwin – Butler #30 – Anthony Cowan – Maryland #31 – Jeremiah Robinson-Earl – Villanova #32 – Paul Scruggs – Xavier #33 – Bryan Antoine – Villanova #42 – Wendell Moore - Duke #52 – Naji Marshall – Xavier #59 – Matthew Hurt – Duke #68 – Alpha Diallo – Providence #72 – Ty-Shon Alexander – Creighton #81 – Koby McEwen – Marquette #86 – Tyrique Jones – Xavier #115 – James Akinjo - Former UConn signee was best of a productive trio of Patrick Ewing’s freshmen.
( sidenote : Why even mention the whole UConn scenario? Is it just me or is it like they are trying to diminish Georgetown’s eventual signing of him by reminding people he was at first a Huskie recruit. This wouldn’t be unacceptable if Akinjo was just coming to Georgetown as a frosh but he already has a year under his belt and no one thinks of the UConn connection other than UConn fans). #116 – Saddiq Bey – Villanova #126 – Matt Coleman III – Texas #131 – Jason Carter – Xavier( sidenote : Did the entire Xavier roster make this list? They must be the new Duke). (another sidenote: Wow Burlinson and those sports guys in Ohio must be more impressed with Xavier than the DC folks are with Georgetown. But of course its not just Georgetown. No mention of the St. John returning senior duo, not much love for Providence either. Marquette and Villanova are the only teams other than Xavier who got multiple mentions. However how is it that Xavier can have three guys ahead of whom they consider to be Georgetown’s best player, Akinjo? That Xavier team better run away with the conference title at that rate. I am also shocked Yurtseven didn’t get a nod here when more limited-in-number top 100 lists from other sources did include him. His absence from a top 150 listing is comically absurd. Heck, I think LeBlanc arguably did enough to get a spot on a water-down top 150 college list. But man the disrespect to McClung is glaring. I don’t care if Saddiq Bey shot more efficiently from the field, he is a much more limited player in terms of what he can do on the floor an did not have near the impact on his team as MClung did. Basically I’m saying these mock lists are trash, but fun to argue over. If the Hoyas face Duke in New York they might as well forfeit considering the Blue Devils have four guys listed way ahead of the only Gtown representative. Tre Jones is 111 spots better than Akinjo? The fourth-year Yurtseven is not even in the same planet as freshman Carey? This is all about who has the hottest brand and recency bias so far as oncourt results are concerned. Carey may be a lottry pick waiting to happen but its doubtful in a one-on-one against Yurtseven he would be that dominant). (one more sidenote: after seeing enough of the Terps games last season, I’d take Akinjo-Yurtseven over Cowan-Smith. As the kids would say…come at me). Top Ten BackCourts1-Florida 2-Michigan State 3-Kentucky 4-Duke 5-North Carolina 6-Marquette 7-Ohio State 8-Arizona 9-Kansas 10-Seton HallTop Ten Frontcourts1-Memphis 2-Maryland 3-Gonzaga 4-Louiville 5-Duke 6-Kansas 7-Washington 8-Florida 9-Villanova 10-Kentucky BIG EAST COVERAGEA very positive quick writeup of the conference by Michael Bradley titled “ ‘Hoops Conference’ Thing Seems To Be Working Out”. This picks listing has a “Good News, “Bad News” and “Our Call” for each team. The Hoyas one goes as: Good News - Last year’s recruiting class delivered right away and another infusion of talent arrivesBad News – Still-young team must improve defense and consistency to jump into title contentionOur Call – Patrick Ewing is making it happen in DC, but taking that next step is always the toughestAll Conference Teams FIRSTMarkus Howard Myles Powell Kamar Baldwin Alpha Diallo Paul ScruggsSECONDKoby McEwan – Marquette Ty-Shon Alexander Saddiq Bey Jeremiah Robinson-Earl – Villanova Naji Marshall THIRDCollin Gillespie – Villanova LJ Figueroa – St. John’s Bryan Antoine – Villanova James Akinjo Tyrique Jones – Xavier( sidenote : Yep. No Yurtseven. Completely nuts. Gillespie over McClung? Don’t get me started. Akinko only Hoya rep and on third team to boot. Whatever.) Of the ten returning leading scorers St. John’s and Georgetown place two on the list (Akinjo and McClung). Villanova doesn’t have a single one. Josh LeBlanc is top five in returning rebounders. Akinjo of course is #1 returning assists man, well, actually number one period of all players in conference last season. Lindsy’s does a special type of writeup for the important conferences when it comes to Recruiting and the newcomers. They break things down into categories such as Will Have The Most Impact, Best Playmaker/Passer, Best Shooter, best Rebounder, Likely To Wear an NBA Uniform First, blah, blah, blah and then devote a few sentences to the one or two freshmen they pick for these categories. Frank Burlinson is responsible for putting the list together and he didn’t choose a single Hoya frosh for anything. HONOR ROLL Player of the Year : M. Howard Newcomer of the Year : Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Top Shooter : M. Howard Top Rebounder : Paul Reed (DePaul) Top Defender : LJ Figueroa Top Playmaker : Akinjo Most Versatile : LJ Figueroa Top NBA Prospect : Myles Powell Most Entertaining : M. But there is no denying that Patrick Ewing’s second season at his alma mater gave people reason for optimism….”“Last season, Georgetown proved it could score points. A dynamic group of young players emerged around senior Jessie Govan to play an exciting style.”“And barring any catastrophic injuries, this year’s edition should be potent offensively and more stingy at the other end. By March, they might just be dangerous.”“The Hoyas could well have the tallest team in the nation, with a 7-footer and three 6-11 freshmen. If Ewing wants to super-size things, he can do it like no one else in the country.” “But there’s more, beginning with JC forward Galen Alexander, who was highly recruited out of high school. He’s athletic and can shoot some.
Then there is the trio of 6-11 freshmen. Qudus Wahab is a Nigerian who played at Flint Hill Academy and is an excellent defensive player and a hard worker. Malcolm Wilson is another good defender with solid mobility and a somewhat raw offensive game, while NBA Academy Africa product Timothy Ighoefe is an athletic freak with an 8-11 standing reach. Freshman forward Myron Gardner excels in the open court.”OUTLOOK: “The Hoyas aren’t there yet, but they have plenty of pieces. These results are because of Ewing’s system and the offense he runs.) Quick breakdown of each player Jahvon Blair : Solid passer can also hit the long ball Jamorko Pickett : Good outside shooter is also a good shotblocker McClung : Exciting player needs to round out his offensive game Akinjo : Budding star has a complete game at both ends Jagan Mosely : Proven distributor can also score inside and out LeBlanc: Sturdy inside player can finish well and hit the boards Yurtseven: NC State transfer will bring scoring inside and out, along with rebounding Galen Alexander: Athletic JC three man can shoot and get to the basket Terrell Allen: UCF transfer is excellent defender and mature leader Myron Gardner: Small forward is at his best in the open court and can guard multiple positions Timothy Ighoefe : Nigerian import has tremendous reach and mobility Qudus Wahab: Hard working pivot is strong defender and is active in the open floor Malcolm Wilson : Lean, mobile big man needs time to develop his offense, but can help now defensively.
( sidenote: as I mentioned in a previous post this mag has Gtown rank #40 pre-season, with them being one and done in the tournament).

1) Is McEwan coming off injury because his numbers weren't that great on Marquettes foreign tour. 5.5 pug and 3.5 assists in the 2 boxscores I saw.
2) The fact that they have Scruggs rated as a better player than Naji Marshall makes me question everything else. I think Scruggs is quality but that has to be a typo...

The Big East is on notice.”TOP NEWCOMER: “Omer Yurtseven: Georgetown needs a proven man to take over in the middle and Yurtseven brings an impressive skill set.”At A Glance – “2019-2020 Honors: NC State transfer Omer Yurtseven will make an immediate impact inside and will be one of the league’s top frontcourt players while sophomore guard James Akinjo has the game to be an all-league candidate."“Keep An Eye On : Mac McClung is a threat to create a highlight every time he touches the ball, especially in the open court, and if his shooting improves, he’ll be really dangerous.”“ 16.4 : The Hoyas topped the Big East in assists per game, an indication of their backcourt depth and talent.”( sidenote: yes, the Hoyas’ backcourt is all those things but the team led the BE in assists the previous season when the backcourt was not those things.
Appreciate the synopsis. Serious question (yes I know rankings really aren’t based on this): could Akinjo beat Nico Mannion in a 1-on-1 game?

I needed reminding that Seton Hall was 9-9 in conference play last season, not a juggernaut I keep imagining they had been.

One line dedicated to Georgetown specifically which goes - “Don’t look now, but Georgetown is building something impressive in DC.”Big East Conference PicksVillanova Seton Hall Xavier Marquette Creighton Georgetown Providence Butler St. John’s DePaul ( sidenote: DePaul never gets a break from these folks.) This picks listing has a “Good News, “Bad News” and “Our Call” for each team. HowardSome excerpts from the Georgetown page in the magazine (written by Michael Bradley) “Georgetown still isn’t ‘back,’ as in, what Hoya fans expect…a return to dominance and true national prominence. The Hoyas will be big, deep and talented, and should find themselves in the Big East’s first division.
The three sophomores are future stars; Yurtseven, Allen and Alexander provide experienced support, and the big freshmen are intriguing prospects. ( sidenote: as I mentioned in a previous post this mag has Gtown rank #40 pre-season, with them being one and done in the tournament). Yawn Who cares? I know we are excited about the season but these guys have no special authority for truth.
