I was driving and had a DVR snafu, so I only caught the second half. For this team, EVERY Big East win is a Big Win, especially on the road. Overall thoughts: - Super impressive to keep Butler under a PPP, at least from the half I saw. More defensive energy from everyone than we saw in much of the non-conference season. You do winder (and kind of hope) that some of the players got bored. It would have been a much bigger win if somehow that energy extended to the defensive boards, where we got absolutely killed. Some of that was contesting shots, but but some of it was lazy, no blocking out. Overall, though, have to love the defense.
- It also would have been a blowout if we had made our free throws or not fumbled down the stretch. Both those things have to get better.
- As it was, the offense was saved by Greg. Just on fire shooting wise complemented by his nice passing. But that hot -- nailing step backs and finally coming off that wrap around screen and going up straight -- and he can win us some games, as he did tonight. Great game by him.
- I can't agree with folks that want to give up on Pickett. I thought he was working hard on D in the second half. I'm more in the camp of "we need him to get it started again." We don't need every player to hit every cylinder every game, but we're going to need good offensive and defensive games out of Pickett this year.
- James had a terrible game, but I still wanted the ball in his hands at the end. But Jessie was the best money man on breaking that press.
- Josh is still awesome, but hopefully he goes home and practices some FTs.
- Blair had another nice little game, both shooting but also rebounding and doing his usually not turn the ball over thing. I was thinking that we'd want to really shorten the rotation come BE play, but everyone is currently bringing something.
The great thing was that they knew that Greg was hot and still couldn't stop him. His size (especially at the 2) and skills make him hard to defend even if you focus on him.

This team really does have depth. LeBlanc has earned his starting job and won't go back to the bench Pickett has been much more effective defensively than last year - and we all hope his O returns...needs confidence Blair has proven to be a valuable contributor in limited minutes off the bench. KJ provides energy, defense, some rebounding... and gives us good minutes Malinowski has been getting more minutes since the 7th game of the season, including 31 and 32 in the last two games. He should keep getting serious minutes. Plays smart ball - shows his experience.. With all the youngsters on this team, he is a valuable guy to have on the floor Mourning should have to work his way back to minutes... once he returns from that nasty head injury. Take your time though... head injuries are nothing to fool around with. Mosely provides experience and D, but still makes me nervous on O. He can def continue to help this team though.
Jessie, James, Mac, Josh and Jamorko should continue to start for the time being.
That's my view anyway. Others chime in and lets continue to compare thoughts

If he can start to reliably hit that curl play -- he did once in the second half -- it's completely unstoppable, especially at the college level. That's a Klay Thompson special, snd you can get that shot anytime against anyone. It's just hard as hell to hit.

For those who say we need to recruit over Pickett or sit him....I strongly disagree. He played a lot of minutes, had one turnover, played the passing lanes well, played tough D, rebounded and facilitated. Whether its going in or not, his defender has to guard him on the perimeter and as a result his presence alone acts to spread the floor. Absolutely correct. Those who judge a player by the total points are missing other important contributions. Pickett has improved substantially on defense. His passing is better and his length gives the Hoyas an asset on the perimeter on both ends of the court. The kid is pressing and his shot is not falling. I applaud Ewing for sticking with him. He performed well last year and remains a very young player.

The most important takeaway from this game is that the ceiling is much higher than we saw tonight and yet the Hoyas still pulled out a road victory in a hostile arena and without two starters and virtually no offensive contribution from a couple of key players. The arrow continues to point up and if McCLung and Mourning return soon and the coach can continue to mix and match his rotations to go with the hot hand, this team has some real upside. Rebounding, TOs and FT shooting must improve to compete against the better teams in the BE though.

Once it all coalesces for him people are going to be like this guy got good overnight. Hopefully that happens later this season but if not by next season.

Yeah and people were saying last week if you can only beat Howard by this much you aren't going to do anything in the Big East.

Greg M. was on fire tonight, but the three point shooting was insane all around. This was a terrific win, but we can't expect to shoot like that with any regularity. Also, TO's were even, and we won. I have to admit, though, I got a little nervous when our 16 point lead was reduced to 6 over 80 seconds. On the flip side we can't expect to shoot free throws or rebound like that either so that evens out and we still win easily. Geez...why can't we focus on the positive

Some observations and opinions. Malinowski is who the prognosticators and media predicted Joe Cremo was going to be. How's that working out for you, prognosticators? I recall over the past year or so people on this board questioning Ewing's judgment for bringing in Malinowski. I recall respected members of this board who, unlike me and a few others, were not impressed with his performance in the Kenner League and thought he would get limited minutes at best because of concerns of him being "Big East" caliber. I think all of those doubts have finally been debunked tonight if they weren't before this game. Another reason to trust Ewing's judgment. Three or more weeks ago some individuals were claiming that McClung should come off the bench. But he kept getting better and then put up 38 points in a win and suddenly Hoya fans were worried about how detrimental to the team his absence would be. Now after two victories without him, folks are wanting him to come off the bench again. Enough of fans making lineup decisions; thst's tiring. I'm going to trust Ewing's decisions on this matter. Now there are increased calls for Pickett's removal from the starting lineup. Again why do some of you feel you know better than the coach? If he feels such a move is necessary for the team he'll do it, but from my vantage point Malinowski is gonna to get minutes regardless. And no getting off to a great start with him in the starting lineup is not as important as sustaining strong play when he is arrives on the court. Although if Pickett awoke from his coma and McClung keeps improving his outside shooting this team could beat any other team in the nation. Ewing puts players in a position to put up points. Did it with Derrickson and Govan last season and doing it with Govan and a bunch of other dudes this season. If someone has the hot hand Ewing's offense will adjust to accommodate them. Major difference from III's days in which even future NBA guys didn't put up many 20 points game because of the offensive philosophy and a more slowed down approach. The Hoyas have played three true on-the-road games and looked very good each time out. Should be 3 and 0 right now on that front with a win over Syracuse. I think our guys like playing in front of enthusiastic albeit hostile crowds. Blair is getting less minutes but is still producing. I'm old enough to recall people stating, after so many close wins against inferior opponents, that this team would struggle to get 4 Big East victories. Well...the team is 3 away from that ceiling. Well said. Agree 100%. Agreed especially about lineups. Greg didn't win a game of paper, rock, scissors to start for Mac; Pat chose him intentionally to do so. Its his third start of the year. People act like after 15 years in the NBA, Pat doesn't understand that "fancy number language" and he's just being stubborn and old school not starting Greg. Uh, no. He's looking at matchups and development for where we want to be late in the year. Probably should trust him as he tries to build this program. Over .500 in conference for the first time since 2016. A little ray of hope for the Hoyas tonight. Welcome sight.

I would say no. And if I am correct some people on this board did not want Greg Malinowski starting. I don't think so either. As much as everyone wants to give Pat credit for bringing in Greg I think he might have lucked into this one. I think Greg who was obviously an academic wanted to come to Georgetown more than Pat going out and "finding" him. He's not even on scholarship. It makes no sense for Pat to bring in essentially a grad transfer at not a position of need and play him at the end of the rotation if he was really enamored by him. The minutes Greg got before the injury falls in line with how Pat treats old JT3 players. The guys that Pat is solely responsible for get the first crack and plenty of minutes. As I said this is what every person in sports management does so I am not singling out Pat. It's just the game works. I know this will go over like most of my stuff on here but whatever.

Pickett is becoming the Anthony Jones of this generation's Hoyas. Hopefully Pickett has better study habits than Anthony Jones did over 3 decades ago. Not too often Georgetown gives up 22 more shots to its opponents and wins by eight. Butler couldn't shoot.

Controlled the tempo well, which led to the win. Great game from Greg, he was nothing short of spectacular. Late game situations do need some work, the guys need to stay playing fast in those scenarios. The only times Butler went on runs were when we allowed them to play their style. Late game, we slowed it down and allowed them to run their plays and had none of our own, causing TO's. Keep the burners on until around the 1:30-1:00 mark, that's the way to close out teams like this. Play your way until they have to foul or need to drain clock to win the game. Very happy with today's game, we won it with defense which would've been the last thing I would've expected two weeks ago. By defending as well as we did, our offense flowed and got Greg open for shots that he buried. If we made our free throws and rebounded better (our two main strengths that will get better) we would've won this game by 15+. Great start to conference play, hope it continues.

A perhaps unnoticed but an important part of Greg's game tonight (and in past games): he inbounded the ball against the press when it looked like we might gag it away (again), and never turned it over/always was patient and didn't panic (hitting Jessie coming back for the ball a few times). Obviously that has been a BIT of a problem in the last few years, and Greg handled it well -- even lead to a couple break-outs the other way (how refreshing!). He also, at least according to the announcers, was the player who called the time-out when Akinjo found himself trapped in the last few minutes as Butler was storming back (we had three left at that point, and finally someone had the sense to make good use of them). Just something to watch/credit both Greg and Patrick for tonight and going forward... I think Greg is the best overall passer on the team. Great court vision. Moves the ball quickly when it needs to. Seems to always find the open cutter, or take advantage of a bad rotation on defense. It's really fun (and refreshing) to watch.

Also, he's playing Govan and Mourning a lot and those were JT3 guys. He's a shooter that the team has lacked for years, adding one makes a lot of sense. Pat's gone out and gotten shooters who fit the style of play like a Jahvon Blair and Greg fits the style. Makes sense in my eyes.

This is complete nonsense. Yes like all the other stuff you said I am crazy for. I must be the luckiest person alive. What on earth are toy talking about. You just lack foresight and need immediate gratification and have an axe to grind with McClung. This is utter bullocks and just fulfilling some weird need for you undermined anything positive about Ewing. He l's not a traditional walk on in any sense as he was on scholarship last year. He wouldn't be on the team if Ewing didn't want him on the team and he certainly wouldn't be playing and starting if it weren't for Ewing. We certainly wouldn't be running plays designed for him. You just try to find the negative even in positive moments. Go away and comeback after we lose to St Johns and you can find first half rotation to pin it on.

We couldn't get someone like Malinowkski to come here for what 5-7 years under III and Malinowski would have fit perfect in the Princeton cause he can hit the open shot.

Honestly I'm not certain if he's on scholarship but the scholarship chart in the recruiting board has him as a walk on. If he was so wanted by Pat why was he getting the second least minutes of the rotation guys? He's been highly efficient and needed all year. I am up for other explanations of how this could be. I've give the only one that makes sense to me. As far as Trey he may have been a JT3 guy but he really wasn't. He was here because his dad is Alonzo Mourning. He was even rumored to transfer when JT3 was going to stay because he got limited playing time but stayed on the team when Pat was announced. Everyone knows Pat and Alonzo are friends. I think it's safe to say Trey is a Pat guy. As for Govan let's be real. He's not going to sit his best player.
