Well, it shouldn't. Uconn has a micro problem and a macro one. Being 1-8 in the AAC is the micro problem, the result of recycling Randy Edsall and having the worst defense in the nation. (Not a good sign when the second paragraph of the bio for the defensive coordinator lists him as being at Villanova. In week 10.) uconnhuskies.com/coaches.aspx?rc=173&path=footballThe macro problem is the AAC isn't their home, the pot o' gold from the ACC isn't there, and the Big East doesn't really need them as it might have five years ago. What if UConn dropped football and the Big East then said no? Where would they go, America East? The AAC isn't the SEC--the road to being a good team in that league is manageable. A new coach, a new recruiting outlook, and a softer schedule (trade Boise St. and Syracuse for Fordham and Yale) and the Huskies get better pretty quickly.

There's also a optics angle to this--only two flagship state schools nationwide do not field a football team, the University of Alaska-Anchorage and the University of Vermont, neither of which have schools beneath them in their state also playing in Division I. Does Storrs really want to cede football while Central Connecticut State is fielding a 60 scholarship team with no apparent issues? It's comparable to College Park considering dropping football while Towson is humming right along--they're funded as flagship schools for a reason.
As I said before, it's the lady or the tiger: hang on waiting for the golden parachute from the ACC and ESPN (headquartered in Connecticut, for goodness sake) and risk going broke, or fold your hand with no path back to the revenue streams enjoyed at BC, Syracuse, Pitt, etc.

I think there's a good chance it doesn't. I think Connecticut is not unique in this respect. It would not be surprising at all if in 20-30 years (or sooner), multiple universities end their Division 1 football teams. The pot of gold that has been supporting college football over the last couple of decades will not continue to grow endlessly. That said, if they do ever get an ACC or big conference invite, that would solve much of the problem. But again, I am not sure the economics of that will come to pass for Connecticut.

If I were them, I would go independent and try to find a place for the rest of the sports. BE would be smart if we could include a huge buyout clause and some sort of guaranteed games (Nova-Uconn and Gtown-UConn games could turn into rivalries over time).

The AAC signed a 12 year extension with ESPN: more money per school, but the majority of games are now moved to ESPN's streaming service that most fans aren't getting to begin with. No grant of rights, so the musical chairs will continue in Storrs at the next realignment. awfulannouncing.com/ncaa/espn-1-billion-deal-aac-espn-plus.html
