I’m sure he’d prefer to let his highest NRA donor just shoot them.

Racist MAGA GOP The GOP’s race problem goes well beyond DeSantis Republicans insist they are misunderstood on race. Sure, they extol Confederate generals, abhor affirmative action, feature neo-Nazis on social media, make excuses for slavery and think White people are the real victims of discrimination but, gosh darn it, stop calling them racists! Well, these days, they hardly bother to disguise their real views on race. In Alabama, we’re back to the massive resistance, the movement in Southern states post-Brown v. Board of Education to delay or outright defy the Supreme Court’s order to desegregate. The court, you’ll recall, in June ordered Alabama to redo its congressional districts to provide a second majority-Black congressional district. The state defied the court’s plain instruction. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/08/04/newsletter-republicans-desperation/

Florida Carnage while DeSantis gallivants around the country running an incompetent and vacuous campaign. Your "free market" at work, GOP morons. How Florida let a top insurer abandon homeowners in their time of greatest need State officials, who said failing to reserve enough money was one of the primary reasons UPC went insolvent, struggled to respond as the situation worsened. People in the industry flagged evidence of alleged wrongdoing to regulators, but said their concerns were not seriously reviewed. And even though officials initiated monthly check-ins with UPC as its finances deteriorated, they mistakenly believed UPC could cover homeowners’ claims up until just shortly before the insolvency. Now, the state-run Florida Insurance Guaranty Association is responsible for trying to close 22,000 UPC claims, which will take more than a year and probably cost around $600 million, officials say. For the first time since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the state has to levy an emergency assessment on nearly all Florida residents to help cover the cost of such a massive insolvency, further spiking homeowners’ rates. UPC’s business model, insurance and financial experts say, reflects a lax regulatory framework that has made it even harder for Florida residents to get back on their feet after disasters. “Insurance companies have been given tremendous amount of leeway in Florida,” Birny Birnbaum, the director of the Center for Economic Justice and a former insurance regulator said in an interview. “Light regulation let these smaller companies come in and cherry pick what they want to cover. When there is no hurricane, they can make a tremendous amount of money. When there is one, executives can walk away without much liability and a lot richer.” www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/08/04/how-florida-let-top-insurer-abandon-homeowners-their-time-greatest-need/

We can all see what is coming with this, right? This will be more “proof” of the weaponization of the FBI against Republicans. This seems like a new chapter in the New American Fascist Playbook for the Republican Party. Just as it was with “fake news”, call everything bad about you “fake news” and a “hoax” despite all evidence to the contrary and prime your supporters to reject any and all negative publicity (of which there is plenty) as fake news. Here, prime the idiocy pump by calling the FBI and DOJ weaponized, commit crimes with impunity, and then decry the further weaponization of government to shield yourself from any criticism. The tactics are so painfully obvious, yet the Republican base is absolutely blind to them or actually willfully partakes, somehow, against all facts and reason, believing all the while they are on the right side. It’s truly frightening how willing they are to bend to fascism while pretending to be freedom loving patriots.

Perversely, the MAGA GOP cult has made being indicted a plus in politics. Go figure. The cult of lawlessness and disorder.

Radical nihilist losers. House Republicans once regarded Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as their easiest impeachment target. Yet even that seems increasingly out of reach. Centrist Republicans were never quite sold on impeaching the secretary over problems at the border, nor aligned with their colleagues’ belief that Mayorkas lied to lawmakers at a committee hearing. Now, some of the most vocal Republicans pushing to remove him are acknowledging they’re finding GOP skeptics virtually immovable. www.politico.com/news/2023/08/08/house-gop-mayorkas-impeachment-00110154

Of course, that's not the impetus because we don't have a gun problem, amirite?

Another day, another opportunity for Comer and Jordan to embarrass themselves. The new argument that even if Biden didn’t benefit or receive any payment from Hunter Biden’s business dealings is STILL enough to show that Biden is corrupt is mind bogglingly dumb. I guess we can now impute any activity of any family member to the family member we choose to target? If that’s the case, Clarence Thomas is 100% responsible for his wife’s effort to overturn the election. Interesting. And these are the people who want to call prosecuting the mountains of evidence directly linking trump to criminal activity a witch hunt and a hoax. Just shameless, hypocritical, political hacks. thehill.com/homenews/house/4146309-gop-memo-argues-direct-payments-to-president-biden-not-needed-to-show-corruption/amp/

MAGA GOPer politicians know how ignorant their base is and continue to exploit them. As paradise burned, DeSantis fiddled with climate-change education While the world watched in horror as Maui burned, Florida educators were busy adopting a new climate-change curriculum that minimizes teaching about the dangers of global warming and distorts scientific information. If only Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) were stupid enough to believe all this, but a Yale- and Harvard-educated military veteran can’t pretend he doesn’t know better. Far worse than a stupid governor is an intelligent one who plays dumb and down to voters. DeSantis didn’t invent the strategy; it’s a tried-and-true approach that goes back (at least) to Richard M. Nixon and a 1966 stump meeting at the Wade Hampton Hotel in Columbia, S.C. Campaign aide Pat Buchanan recalled in a New Yorker interview that the room was “filled with sweat, cigar smoke and rage,” and the law-and-order rhetoric “burned the paint off the walls.” Leaving the hotel, Nixon said, “This is the future of this party, right here in the South.” A generation or two later, the GOP institutionalized willful ignorance when Sarah Palin walked onto the vice-presidential debate stage, winked and asked then-Sen. Joe Biden whether she could call him “Joe.” (During debate rehearsals, she kept saying “Joe O’Biden. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/08/11/maui-fires-florida-desantis-climate-change-curriculum/
