The day free-market Republicans became Soviet economic planners Can you remember when Republicans still believed in the free market? It was sometime before Donald Trump started routine attacks on the “globalists” of Goldman Sachs and the leaders of large U.S. corporations; before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis used tax policy to attack the Walt Disney Co. because it dared to disagree with his “don’t say gay” legislation; before congressional Republicans harassed social media companies and book publishers over alleged “censorship” of their views; before they threatened Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Major League Baseball over their support for voting rights; before they vowed to use federal resources to retaliate against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for backing a few Democrats; before Republican governors enacted laws overriding private employers’ coronavirus vaccination policies; and before GOP-led states moved to disrupt interstate commerce to block abortion access and morning-after pills. This week brought the latest evidence that the former party of laissez-faire capitalism has reimagined itself in the image of a Soviet State Planning Committee. Republican lawmakers are now telling investors which businesses they can and can’t invest in — and which investment criteria they will be permitted to consider. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/05/12/esg-house-republicans-james-comer-capitalism/

Jordan Neely was poor and black. To borrow from Succession, it was an NRPI (no real person involved) incident for DeSantis and people like him. When Republicans say they are pro-life or “All Lives Matter”, it is important to realize they mean white, Christian, American lives. Everyone else is completely expendable.

From the Duffel Blog (think The Onion for the military and vets):
WASHINGTON, DC - War hero, underwear model, motivational speaker and recently-elected congressman George Santos this week pled not guilty to federal charges of fraud and theft, stating in court that his long record of military service should indicate that he would never break the law.
“I wasn’t a space shuttle door gunner on Utah beach so I could stand by and watch POGs make up false claims against me,” Santos said, shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal a tattoo reading, “Sempers Lead the Fi” on one forearm.
Party leadership rallied around the longtime conservative stalwart.
"It is an absolute miscarriage of justice to see this proud combat veteran of The Great War, a man who has devoted his life to honor, integrity and courage, charged with lying and cheating his way to success," said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a statement. “I am proud to support one of the nine Republicans through whom we retain a narrow congressional majority and my overwhelmingly supported speakership.”
Santos' supporters welcomed the news as well.

From his ham-handed mangling of congressional probes that makes Inspector Clouseau look like Sherlock Holmes, to his stupefying lack of anything approaching acuity, Kentucky’s own Rep. Jamie Comer has suddenly emerged as the pasty face of a new, grievance-riddled Republican Party, steamrolling the nation toward the sort of discord unseen since the Vietnam War. Comer, R-Whereverhehangshishat, chairs the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, the chamber’s primary investigatory panel, and he has vowed to examine President Biden on everything up to his bathroom habits, although it’s always possible that may wind up next on the panel’s agenda. Thus far, the only thing Jamie has managed to establish is that he is a dope, a fool and a schnook on any number of stages, ranging from his seeming devotion to the so-called “replacement theory” to his pursuit of Hunter Biden, the president’s son, that has resulted in every available two-bit, crank, right-wing broadcaster providing his preening visage to millions. www.nkytribune.com/2023/03/bill-straub-jamie-comer-is-on-a-misguided-multifaceted-roll-indeed-and-hes-in-over-his-head/

Jim "Moron" Comer. I know it's wrong but I always hear "Dueling Banjos" in the background whenever he opens his ignorant piehole. Rep. James Comer is looking for anti-Biden evidence. Also, his informant. In the abstract, it seems odd that Comer would push forward so eagerly with wispy or dubious assertions about Biden that almost necessarily erode the credibility of himself and his committee. Yes, it generates energy and enthusiasm on Fox News and in the New York Post, but it also raises the bar for objective media outlets to take his claims at face value. The boy who called bribe and all that. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/15/comer-biden-allegations/

I suggest Comer look there.
