The 2022 midterm elections saw an unprecedented number of Republican candidates deny or cast doubt on the results of the latest presidential election, spread false conspiracy theories about the nation’s voting systems and, in many cases, question the legitimacy of American democracy itself.

While a majority of them won, nearly all of the most high-profile candidates lost in what was seen as a national rebuke of the movement.

But losing did not seem to deter many of them.

Six months later, many are considering a return to the campaign trail or continuing to build popularity and power in conservative circles.

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against New York Rep. George Santos, the Republican lawmaker whose astonishing pattern of lies and fabrications stunned even hardened politicos, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Santos is expected to appear as soon as Wednesday at federal court in New York’s eastern district, where the charges have been filed under seal.

The indictment says Santos induced supporters to donate to a company under the false pretense that the money would be used to support his campaign. Instead, it says, he used it for personal expenses, including luxury designer clothes and to pay off his credit cards.
