Looks like he has put on some muscle as of late. He's going to need it.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know his 3pt percentage or general ability to shoot from anywhere except up close?

I've watched 3 or 4 of his games this year, and have not seen him take a shot from further out than the foul line. And he has only taken a few of them. He comes out to the high post to set screens and do some dribble handoff stuff, but he spends the vast majority of his time posting up. he has good mechanics on his foul shot and seems to be a pretty solid foul shooter, so maybe there is some outside shooting potential. But right now he is definitely not looking to take 3's, and barely looking to take any kind of non-post up shots.

I think Ryan will be a good player for the Hoyas and will see a reasonable amount of minutes as a freshman. Probably not a starter (if Q returns) but a reserve that sees time for most/all games. His offensive game is already more developed than the other centers presently on the roster. As he continues to improve and increases his mobility and quickness I think he will become a very important part of the program

His coach says while he's a senior this year, he's a year young for his grade

This is exactly what we need! We don't need a three point shooter from our big. We need them to get inside and score at a high clip. We need Ryan to get stronger and keep working on his inside game. That's all we need.

Bring in Kareem (no offense to Patrick and Dikembe) to teach him the sky hook...

Great kid! So eloquent for such a young age... Practicing with a PG coach since middle school!

Sounds like he's doing everything he can to be the best player he can be. That's all you can ask!
He seems a little slow out there, BUT hard to say it's not because of the competition. He's so much taller than everyone, he really just plays to that strength. What I do like is he has great technique, and everything he does seems to flow in his game. Again, the competition doesn't seem great, but defensively he has a similar blocking style to Dikembe. He doesn't seem to rush out of position to chase blocks. He stays down on pump fakes well, and uses his length to either block of alter the shot. In some of the footage I've seen, he also reads the game well and can kick the ball out to open shooters (something we all complain about with Qudus). And he's confident. We'll see how his game translates against the huge step up in competition he'll face next season, and facing some players that are of similar height. He should be a useful piece though early on, and likely to get better over time as he adjusts and grows even more into his body.
Basketball IQ appears to be high, which G'Town is lacking! Could be a future leader on court as well, he's well spoken and quite mature for his age.

Could be a future leader on court as well, he's well spoken and quite mature for his age. Passing out of the post might be the strongest part of his offensive game right now. He sees open shooters at the 3 point line very quickly, and delivers the kickout passes decisively. the biggest question will be whether he can finish around the basket against Big East caliber opponents. He has really good touch and a very quick move to the basket when he receives the ball at the rim. But he does not elevate. He does not have to use pump fakes and other more advanced moves very often right now because he is simply so much taller than most of the players defending him. But his fundamentals are so solid throughout his game, he is smart, and he works hard at his game. I don't think it's a stretch to believe that he'll develop the advanced low post moves he'll need to score inside in the BE. Ryan will be a fun player to root for - great kid, great student, hard worker, and a promising size/skill combination.

I dont believe it is unteachable at all. I don't know why young bigs don't develop that effective and artistic shot. Laugh, but I met young Patrick, out and about in the city, while he was attending Gtown and encouraged him to develop a skyhook like Kareem's into his repertoire. Sadly he did not. He did develop a jump hook, which is different. Many young centers did. It seems young players have moved away from that too. The rage now is for centers to shoot 3s. I'm only being serious.

In my opinion, it's one of the finest, most beautiful and indefensible shots in the history of basketball.
