Great kid. He's got a lot of work to put in. Needs to work on strength, explosiveness and energy.

Love Dikembe.....one of the most humble and kind people I've ever met.

I watched the game that Ryan played that was linked above, and I came away impressed. I know people might comment on the competition level, which I accept, but it was still clear how smart a player he is, moving to position himself well on offense and defense. He seems confident shooting FT's. He clearly has his dad's good shot blocking instincts and, I imagine, his dad's easily overlooked strength.
I was on campus at the time Dikembe was there, and I remember when I realised how strong Dlkembe really was. I am pretty sure it was after the BE tournament championship game, my senior year (1989). For some reason there was no ladder for cutting down the nets. So Dikembe put each person on his shoulders for the net cutting, in place of a ladder. Jonathan Edwards, an amazingly good guy I was lucky enough to room on the same floor with freshman year, basically laughed when Deke told him to get on his shoulders. Jonathan was nearly 6-10 and a big, strong guy. Deke insisted and hoisted him up like nothing. Lots of strength in that family.

Great kid. He's got a lot of work to put in. Needs to work on strength, explosiveness and energy. I agree that Ryan does not look like the smoothest, most fluid/explosive athlete in some of these highlights, but I think he has significantly improved from some earlier highlights. He appears to run the floor well and he looks to have very developed fundamentals and it looks like he has identified his advantages in these games and has worked on his skills so he can exploit those advantages. I know we see a lot of 4- 5 star big men that seem to have worked hard on developing their perimeter games and ability to play away for the basket, but I am not sure that always translates into success in games when playing against other high level players. Ryan seems to have worked hard to develop the skills he needs to be a successful big man. I am excited by what I see and think he will be a big contributor next year.

The competition looked like Dikembe playing intramurals in his freshman/project year: no one close to his height and no jumpers because he has too much of an advantage inside. He’s very polished vs. Dikembe’s project year. His FT form is excellent. Always the same shot, except one that hit rim... I’m not going to say he will be the best FT big we have next year because we didn’t see his misses, but he already has the best form.

He appears to be improving...has good hands, nice touch, runs well, is getting stronger...just needs to expand his offensive moves to include the pump fake and up and under moves, a hook shot with either hand and possibly a facing mid range jump shot...but I really like his continued drive to improve...

No doubt he has put some time in on his free throws, his form looks very smooth, which is not always the case with big men. With that release I would think he would have a decent mid range jumper also at this point. He also shows great poise and patience when he gets the ball in the post, he never rushes his moves and finishes really well. His coaches must have told him he has a huge size advantage and to take his time and to finish when he gets the ball. He also does a great job positioning himself before he gets the ball so he he ready to catch and finish. All important and impressive skills for a young a big man.
As he moves to the Big East he will have to continue to develop as it will be much harder to get those great post positions and he will need to be quicker and more decisive on his moves in order to finish those shots over bigger/stronger defenders. The great thing is he has the fundamentals and just needs to increase the speed and force that he plays with as the competition increases. I think he will be a very good big man for his years at Georgetown.

I watched one of Ryan's game against slightly bigger, more athletic competition. They worked much harder to keep him from catching the ball 2 feet from the rim, and he scored a lot less. Right now - he is playing to win by dominating kids a foot shorter than him right at the basket. It makes sense, this is the best way for his current team to win. But this approach does not challenge him to develop the broader skill set he'll need against BE competition. I'm sure he is working on this stuff in practice. But in games (I have watched 3 or 4 full games), he is not doing much other than posting up much smaller kids at the rim.
He has tried a few right hand jump hooks, and he is still pretty raw with this shot. But given how smooth he is with his simple post moves and in his foul shooting, there is no reason he can't develop a very nice jump hook. With his height and length, this should be an effective weapon against real competition.
I do have to say that the competition Ryan is playing against (and with) makes the "weak" competition Mac played against in High School look like Oak Hill! These kids in Ryan's high school league are very low level players.
