I see your point and perhaps you are right to make this nuanced observation considering that last years team imploded due to team chemistry or lack thereof. Nobody wants to see Ryan step on the same landmine that those before him did. For the record, I think Ryan is handling himself pretty darn well and seems to be well aware of what caused the team to collapse last year. His reference to working hard in practice as a team speaks to that.

His reference to working hard in practice as a team speaks to that. I think it's an overreaction based on how last year's team imploded based on arguably two egos who couldn't get along. However, the timing is wrong and this take could have been expressed later if it was seen that a pattern was developing.

You took this small thing this young man said in this interview out of context. Ryan was making a plea to Aminu to come and join him with the Hoyas. You should be happy and encourage that Ryan did that. No instead, you take the time to write out a tongue lashing to this fine young man. What the hell is wrong with you?!!! Ryan wasn't putting down any of his teammates and nor was he saying he was taking someone's spot. But what he is saying is he's going to work hard to help the team. Ryan has the confidence to say that he is going to make a big contribution to the team and he has enough belief in his skills that he will play and play a lot. He should feel that way! In spite of the fact that he believes that he should get the time, he is humble enough to know that he's got work to do and he is looking to his coaches and teammates to help him get there. So man get off this trip you're on. If he comes in and gets in the starting lineup, I am sure he would have obviously worked for it. I personally believe that he and Q can start at the same time. Yeah, it may take a year or two before he gets to be one of the top big men in the country. Or, he could come in right away and make the difference right away. Please don't go chastising these fine young men for having a belief in their talents and skills. They are supposed to believe it! Contrary to your claim, I did not take Ryan out of context. Since I am 51 and retired, I have plenty of time to explain what I observed in the interview. And maybe I know a thing or two about leadership. Ryan said a lot of great things, but he proverbially stepped in it a couple of times. It looks to me that his fundamental posture is still 'me' oriented. No matter how articulate and well-spoken someone is, any interview in which you potentially put off or alienate 6 of 12 teammates would be sub-optimal. 5:24 "Obviously, I wasn't going to commit to a college where I wasn't going to come in and play right away." None of us knows exactly what the coaches have told Ryan, but how many people think Patrick has promised playing time before Ryan ever arrives to campus? It is one thing to think this in your ahead, but to announce this publicly is fundamentally disrespectful to every other big on the roster. My speculation is that Patrick told him the creme will rise to the top. If you were a big on the roster, what would you do? Probably put him in his place when he shows up. There could be 2 or 3 junior centers there when he arrives. Instead he should be saying, "I really like the situation at Georgetown. The coaches, the team, the opportunity. It is a great fit for me. I can't wait." 14:11 "Who are some guys that you would like to bring with you now?" "Definitely, Aminu Mohammad. He is a great player, and I want him at Georgetown. Obviously, I am going to respect his privacy and his process and I'm going to let him made that decision for himself. If he is hearing this or seeing this, I definitely want you at Georgetown bro. We would make a great duo. And I think we could learn a lot from each other. And that we would be a dominant duo for sure......(Interviewer: You two on the court together, one two or three years whatever together, what could you accomplish?) definitely a Final Four run....that is my main goal going into the season." Again...more narrative from an orientation of 'me.' We have a player who hasn't arrived at Georgetown talking about how he and another player who hasn't even committed to Georgetown are going to lead us to a Final Four without regard to anyone else. If you are Jordan or Tyler or Dante or Jamari or Kobe, you notice. You many not say anything publicly, but you privately take note. Ideally, he should have said something more like... "Definitely, Aminu Mohammad. He is a great player, and I want him at Georgetown. Obviously, I am going to respect his privacy and his process and I'm going to let him made that decision for himself. If he is hearing this or seeing this, I definitely want you at Georgetown bro. I would love to play with you. You would compliment what Jordan, Tyler, Jalin and I bring. That would be a great class. With all the other great players on the roster, we could make some noise and go to a Final Four." Maybe my observations are not popular...but that doesn't necessarily make them wrong. You said you were 51, correct? Okay then....Ryan is 18! By the time he gets on campus he will be most likely 19! He is a kid! I'm pretty sure when you were a younger man, you must have said a few things that you didn't necessarily need to say. Also, this is sports bro. This is about competing and believing in your skills. If you don't believe in your skills and do not have any confidence in your game, you don't need to be involved in sports. Because only those who work hard and believe in their skills along with work on their skillsets will get the chance to play. I'm pretty sure Q and Tim and even Malcolm welcomes the young fellas confidence in his abilities. Let the teammates, the coaches and Ryan figure out where Ryan belongs on this team and let us just cheer them on as fans. It's bad when we go chastising the kid and he ain't even gotten on court yet. You might find that he may really does need to start because he may just be that good. There has been plenty of freshmen that have started for their collegiate teams over the many years of college basketball and it ain't nothing wrong with that.

Welcome home, Ryan. We hope you have great success at the Hilltop. As for the above, say what? Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Bill Walton say hello. For college I wouldn't even consider Olajuwan top ten. Not ahead of the UCLA guys, Bill Russell, Ewing, Wilt, Laettner, Sampson, Elvin Hayes, etc. Boy, I am sorry to see that this thread has gone totally off the rails. Wrong place and wrong time, really. MCI, I completely agreed with you until I saw Laettner's name, and then I threw up all over myself. Just my anti-Duke bias, I suppose, although I never really thought of him as a center. Hakeem made insane strides his last two years at Houston, but he became a way better pro than he was a college player.

jwp is the same person that was awfully critical of Ryan Mutombo a couple weeks ago when it looked like he was going to Tennessee, and that 2 years ago was critical of Jagan Mosley for posting too many dancing videos on social media...so yeah I wasn’t surprised by his post.
jwp - I get that you’re being protective of the current players and recruits. But I think you’re making some assumptions about Ryan’s first statement that you pointed out.
5:24 "Obviously, I wasn't going to commit to a college where I wasn't going to come in and play right away."
Ryan doesn’t say start right away, he says play right away. Given that Coach Ewing plays freshmen, and also uses a deep bench, I think it’s fair to say that Ryan will play right away, even if it’s in a reserve role. Given Ryan’s emphasis on hard work, I don’t think it’s a stretch that he knows he still has to earn whatever playing time he gets.
For 14:11, sure, instead of “duo” maybe he could have said “play together” or “pair together” or something like that. But you’re also ignoring that at 18:34 Ryan mentions that he’s already talked with Tyler Beard and Jordan Riley and that he’s excited to see them on campus. So I don’t think it’s a problem of his mindset, rather him just answering the question too directly instead of broadly.

You still don't understand my point, but this horse is dead. Being awfully critical of Ryan was stating that Ryan wasn't acting like someone who wanted to come to Georgetown..and he explained how close he was to committing to FSU, Georgia, and Tennessee. So there was some truth there. Fortunately for the Hoyas, he came back around. Someday we will learn the true story about Jagan and how much he was injured vs how much he wasn't prioritizing his basketball improvement. I may have been the only one to comment about how he seemed to prioritize his dancing, but I know for a fact I wasn't the only one to think it. And you missed a couple. I called the rumored fight that Akinjo was in a 'red flag' at the time which caused consternation. And if I am not mistaken, I caused a similar bruhaha 2 years ago when I commented that there were problems with Mac defensively which was met with same ferocious protestations. Anyway, I think we are all tired of this line of conversation. I am out.

There's a standard amount of puffery involved in the recruiting process. One of the best examples I remember is back when we were recruiting Moses Ayegba (at the time he was "Moses Abraham") and his guardian told the Post that JT2 had seen Moses play and told him that he was the best shotblocker he'd seen since Alonzo Mourning. Stroking a kids ego is par for the course when it comes to recruiting. Across the internet you can find plenty of folks who don't really understand how the game is played saying things like "I hope our coach is not promising anyone playing time--I assume our message is that everyone has an equal opportunity and the best players will play." It's a nice sentiment, but the real world in 2020 doesn't look like Norman Dale at Hickory High in the '50s. It's tough to sell a 17 year old on spending a few years on the bench developing behind older guys at the same position, and that applies even to regular hardworking kids, not just to "primadonnas" like some might label some of our recent departures. Recruiting is like an arms race, and if you don't tell a kid what he wants to hear, the odds are that you're going to lose him to one of the dozens of other high major coaches who does. So no one is immune to doing some ego stroking--even Georgetown. And yes, this IS a major factor in why you see so many kids get disillusioned and transfer after a year or two, because their actual experience doesn't match what they heard during recruitment. But it's a fact of life these days, so I wouldn't get too wired up about a kid like Ryan expressing the fact that he sees himself in a prominent role, given that that's what you have to tell kids to keep them interested.
How will it all pan out? Who knows, time will tell. I'm reasonably confident that the staff has also identified that they have a few other older players at the same position, and they're still confident it will work out for the team. Perhaps one or more of those players won't still be here by the time Ryan arrives, or perhaps the staff intends to get creative in finding ways to play them together. Who knows. I haven't seen enough of Ryan in action to really project him out anyway--nor, to be totally honest, do I really think there's enough of a sample from Malcolm or Timmy to gauge their trajectory. A lot will happen between now and then to bring the picture into focus.
For now, I think it's good to just enjoy the fact that we landed a kid who is by all accounts a high level basketball recruit and a high level student and person. He should be a great addition to the team and the university. The recruiting class is looking very solid, and really as good as we could have reasonably hoped for after the recent run of defections. If the current team can find a way to overachieve a little I think we'll be in a great position as we round out the '21 class and start to look forward to the '22s and '23s.

Hopefully we will be talking about basketball then. Meaning just the physical side of the game, correct? Yes. Wins. Losses. Points. Rebounds. I realize (almost) every post on the board has at least an arguable connection to basketball.

Yeah such a silly comment. “As close to a a ( not THE) Fab Five as Georgetown has ever come: 5 freshman, in one class, that could form a complete (1-5 team) as freshmen. Never once said the class would be equal or even in the class of the Michigan FAB 5. But nobody reads anything. They just get their patties twisted and start blasting. Jerome Williams was a JUCO TRANSFER. So that class could not “BE AS CLOSE TO A FAB 5” as we have ever come. Patrick, Ralph, Bill Martin and Anthony Jones (with nothing else) would be. A better recruiting class than 2021 with Aminu. Iverson’s class as well. 2011? Jabril was not a damn point guard. Stop with your MESS. Tyler Adams? Rim protector...maybe PACIFIC RIM protector all he did was thro chairs in CHINA. Name the post 1972 incoming freshman class where there was a Center, PF, SF, SG and PG that would equal this class with Aminu. Been on this board since the days of sweating Khalid El Amin decision and w not be punker by morons.... 1) never compared them to MICHIGAN FAB 5. So jack off. 2) nobody has named a Georgetown class closer to a all freshman every position class.... just calling me a fool when I have forgot more Georgetown basketball than most. 3) this board is just a bunch of unhappy people. Been here since the start but leaving for good. Just because Jabril wasn’t a pure point doesn’t mean he couldn’t/ didn’t play some pg. You play the position you can defend, first and foremost. And Jabril didn’t have great handle because he was so big, but he could handle the other aspects, considering he played a lot of pg throughout his life before he got to GU.... regardless. With Jabril at the point that class is still better. Maybe agree to disagree, but no need to act like your opinion is the most valid and ignore all the people who have pointed out the flaws in your reasoning. And Tyler Adams has a heart condition, but he was (much) better at the same stage than Mutombo. Don’t get it twisted. Also, not sure how people disagreeing with a debatable opinion amounts to people being unhappy, but you do you. You’re entitled to your opinion. I mentioned the lack of a true PG for 2011 but you put those 5 guys on the court vs the other 5 person classes and they are winning regardless of true position assuming Adams never had the heart problem. 2014 and 2018 had 5 guys that could play the 1-5 these days and would run circles around 2021. Regardless to even use the term Fab5 as it relates to the current 2021 class is silly. The Fab 5 is a designation of greatness. Not just 5 guys that play all 5 positions.

I really hope Aminu signs so we can have our version of a FABULOUS 5. Go worship Michigan somewhere else. Who was our 5th recruit in the 2018 class? And I don’t remember Trey Mourning on the court in 2014. But hey what are facts when you are spitting nonsense on a GEORGETOWN board.

We've got way too many folks on this board who seem seriously unhappy. At this point let's welcome the highest rated member of next year's class, who happens to descend from Hoya royalty and seems like a very nice, intelligent kid. What's not to like???

Nothing not to like about Ryan, seems like a great kid and a quality addition. Will be interesting to see how is minutes work in relation to Q and Tim (I assume he'll start out behind Q in the rotation but above Tim, but what do I know). I just think that talking up this recruiting class as one that Georgetown should be thrilled with shows that expectations aren't the same as they were 10 years ago. That being said, Georgetown isn't the same program as it was 10 years ago, and we have some '21 guys that can get this ship going in the right direction, and with increased success comes better recruiting comes more and more success. Hopefully Ryan and this class starts that chain reaction and gets Georgetown back in the national picture, I have faith that they can do it.

And with adults like Dikembe and Patrick to guide him, I would bet he knows that fan boards are populated by pollyannas, eeyores and everything in between.

Yes and then delete this entire thread and start a new one for Ryan and pray he didn’t read any of this garbage Why stop there? Maybe we should delete threads that could insult players already on the darn team with similar dismissive garbage about their worth, value and ability. Right? And then we can take a trip to twitter to wipe away the tweets that constantly question Tyler Beard's devotion to the program. Its not as if Ryan is the lone guy being second-guessed.

Ryan has every reason to be confident and to think highly of his game. He should be feeling that he is good enough to come in and get major minutes immediately. He is no different than most recruits on that front and overall his interview was very impressive. Not that it matters but I came away thinking more highly of him because he said most of the right things and looks to have a winning and charismatic attitude.
Nonetheless, whether he intended to or not there was some shade.
I get that he didn't literally mean bring the Big East back, but how he worded it was a slap in the face to Villanova and even Xavier, Creighton and Seton Hall. He and the fourteen-year old interviewing him seemed to be at a lost of what happened to the Big East. Well, the Big East hasn't gone anywhere and are still sending a high percentage of its teams to the Big Dance each year. Granted only one of those teams have had major success but those championships still count as titles won by the BE conference. And he tries to come off as knowing a lot about BE history by throwing out some old school Big East talking points, but it seems a tad obvious that his understanding is only superficial. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe he and the host were confused because they don't see the BE on ESPN anymore and wonder where it has gone.
He also seemed to imply that the competition for big man minutes would be tougher at Florida State than at Georgetown. Maybe it was again all in the choice of wording and wasn't the point he was trying to make. But by explaining why he was no longer looking at Florida State on one hand but then basically penciling himself already for major minutes as soon as he hits Georgetown, can be interpreted as a slap in the face to guys already here.
Last thing...clearly he is intelligent and extremely well-spoken. But based on all the names of Hoyas on the BE All Academic teams, and interviews they have done and of course the recent off-court accomplishment by Wilson, its not as if we haven't had other ball players just under Ewing's tenure alone who are any less astute and insightful. None of them had a 30 minute platform to show it however like Ryan had the fortune of getting. Its great to see all the serious classroom guys Ewing is bringing in and that should be celebrated.
