We need to concentrate on recruiting scholar/athletes who want to come to Georgetown and play for this coaching staff. If this coaching staff cannot successfully recruit those student/athletes, maybe there's a big problem with the staff. And in either case, it's apparent that HoyaTalk is far more enamored with the idea of a legacy recruit (i.e., Ryan Mutombo) playing at "Big Man U" than that student/athlete is enamored with the idea of playing here; that being the case, I think I'll go get the student/athlete who really wants to be here instead of going to a school that (a) is not the academic equal of Georgetown, and (b) has no history of sustained success in the NCAA. Asking because I honestly don't know but I see the same theme on a number of posts when Georgetown is competing against Big State School X for a recruit ... "much better academics" ... I understand that large state schools have a much broader/diverse (in some senses of the word anyway) student population, meaning that the overall common denominator is probably lower, but I assume that most if not all at least have some academic programs that can hold their own? I know GU alums tend to have an air of elitism (don't @ me, I'm an alum) and US News and World Report blah blah ... but do we really think a kid like Ryan Mutombo, if he desired, couldn't carve out a fairly top-tier academic schedule at school like Tennessee? Yes, he could carve it out at a school like Tenn.

Just another indication that no one but (possibly?) Ryan knows where he stands.

One thing that's been clear is that there is a ton of "follow the leader" when it comes to crystal balls/futurecasts. In a lot of cases, even though these guys are "experts", they are just copycatting from someone else who they believe to have better information. Everyone is trying to pad their stats and lock in a prediction for the eventual winner so as to boost their own credibility. We saw a wave of Mutombo to Tennessee predictions a couple weeks ago, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of that was just people trying to line up behind the Rivals Georgia correspondent (who had previously projected him to Georgetown but changed to Tennessee), not a bunch of people actually hearing from sources close to the situation that he was going to commit to the Vols. Now you see a prediction flip back to Georgetown, and some other experts jump on that too. Most likely when a commitment date is announced, everyone will line up behind whomever seems to be the closest to the situation.
Ultimately, it reinforces the idea that there's not a lot of certainty in this process. At this point, just have to wait and see and can't put too much stock in anything unless it is directly from the Mutombos.

There are a few guys that actually have inside sources when it comes to this stuff, and seemingly every week that passes another guy that actually knows what they’re talking about gets hired somewhere else. The number of quality recruiting analysts left is dwindling.

If it is true, Welcome RYAN! You made a terrific choice. This seems premature, at best. Regardless, I'm sure Ryan will think he's made a terrific choice when he makes up his mind. Wish him the best whatever that choice happens to be. I'm still hoping it's Georgetown but I'll be neither surprised nor remotely upset if it's not. His dad casts a large shadow. If he doesn't want to deal with that, who among us could blame the kid?

From the Tennessee Rivals Mods this morning
"From what we’re hearing family pressure to follow in his father’s footsteps to Georgetown and play for his father’s good friend and former teammate Patrick Ewing is simply going to be too much to overcome.
Tennessee was definitely trending for Mutumbo, and without the family connections this one might already be over for the Vols, but right now it definitely feels like Georgetown is the team to beat."
No offense to my alma mater or the news outlets who cover GU, but the guys at UT (I grew up in Chattanooga and am a UT fball fan) are WAY more connected and vigilant when it comes to this stuff. I'm guessing this is good news for the good guys.

I hope the UT experts are correct. Although I cannot recall a time when PE and Dikembe were teammates!

Either way if he does come here we better do everything we can to make him love the school even if he's not quite at that level at this moment!

Rick Barnes and his staff also seem to have gained some traction with Ryan Mutombo, and may have even opened up a little bit of a lead. They are recruiting at a high level and are well respected in the Atlanta area. Obviously, Georgetown, the alma mater of his father Dikembe Mutombo, is going to be right there, but the sense is that perhaps Ryan might like to create his own path out of the shadow of his father. The other school that stands out to me right now as one to keep an eye on is Stanford. The academics and great class the Cardinal are putting together could be draws. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/wednesday-s-mailbag-vols-committable-offers-more

The recruitment of Ryan Mutombo seems to be nearing a finish and after some twists and turns, it is starting to look like he will end up where everybody figured he would. The son of Georgetown legend Dikembe Mutombo, many figured early in his career that Mutombo was a lock to follow in his father's footsteps. However, there was a stretch over the summer where it really started to look like the seven-footer would end up elsewhere. In particular, Tennessee was gaining a lot of steam and I felt good enough about the Vols chances that made a Futurecast for them. Now, though, it sounds as if Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas have made a strong charge and are back in position to land the legacy recruit. Because of the buzz being generated of late, I flipped my Futurecast to Georgetown. Mutombo is a big kid who will take up space and he plays hard. He'll need to adjust some to the speed of the college game but there's no doubt he'll help out at Georgetown if he does decide to commit. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/starting-five-alabama-houston-nc-state-acquire-more-talent
