Can’t wait for this kid. He seems like a natural leader. This. Been preaching it for months. Having a vocal upperclassmen on the court that will lead the young guys will be HUGE. Unfortunately, this season's group is soft as charmin'.

I didn’t see him at the DePaul game. Assuming normal circumstances, wouldn’t he travel with the team?

Can he defend the post and rim? That’s my biggest question.
His post offense will be welcome, but a big time post/rim defender is a big catalyst to catapult this team to the top of the Big East conference.
[along with a 6’5”-6’8” wing athlete who can push Morko for minutes...]

Yes to both!
But an eraser in the middle makes up for a lot of other mistakes.

Think about this. Jessie and Josh have 73 blocks combined this year.
Yurt had 76 as a sophomore.

Not sure if it's been changed. It was also an extended Midwest road trip, his time might be better spent back at school studying.

Yes to both! But an eraser in the middle makes up for a lot of other mistakes. Not if the mistakes lead to an open 3 for the opposition... Teams getting open looks from 3 has been a much bigger problem than the lack of rim protection...

We were among the better teams in conference defending the three. It wasn’t a major problem for us.

The stats this year don’t support that statement. We were among the better teams in conference defending the three. It wasn’t a major problem for us. Gtown was number 5 during the conference season defending the 3(.347)... However, Gtown had the most 3 point attempts(472) taken against them during conference play... Why do you think that was the case? 3-POINT FG PCT DEFENSE ## Team G FG FGA Pct --------------------------------------------- 1.Providence.......... 18 126 372 .339 2.St. John's.......... 18 153 449 .341 3.Seton Hall.......... 18 144 416 .346 4.Marquette........... 18 134 387 .346 5.Georgetown.......... 18 164 472 .347 6.Xavier.............. 18 151 429 .352 7.Villanova........... 18 152 431 .353 8.Butler.............. 18 145 399 .363 9.Creighton........... 18 168 457 .368 10.DePaul.............. 18 166 450 .369

The main reason is our pace of play, which provides more possessions and therefore more shot attempts by the opponents.
We basically made the same amount of 3s as our opponents, but at a higher percentage than we gave up defensively. Again, this area was not a major problem for us this year.
On the other hand, our turnover margin was negative. That should be an area of focused improvement.

Once you adjust for our pace, the rate of 3PTs taken against us is about 5th in conference as well.
We were 3rd and 5th in 3PT% and 3PA/FGA, respectively, on offense.

My point still remains that Y7's ability to play the high screen/PnR game will have a greater impact on Gtown's defense than his post/rim defense will...

Pace of play has everything to do with the 3PFG issue you raised.

To take tempo out of it, Yurtseven's block % last year was 7.7, whereas LeBlanc's this year is 4.9, and Govan is 4.3. So, I would expect Yurtseven to get quite a few blocks.
Of course, Yurtseven is 7'0 compared to Govan's 6'10, and Josh's 6'7.

Also, a more athletic/active 7 footer patrolling the paint and defending the rim opens up weakside defensive action for LeBlanc, which is really his specialty. He has an eye for seeing a play develop and where the ball is going up and off the rim. I expect a jump in blocks as well, and perhaps in rebounding if Yurt is the defender going up for the initial block more frequently.

Ewing on Omer Yurtseven: "I'm expecting great things out of him."
Me too!
