Georgetown's 16:14 of possession may be the lowest ever recorded for this team. Amazing.

There has to be some changes made in this program. The kids need some help on offense.

I am presuming Barnes was injured in the TD drive?

Please complete this sentence: Georgetown University should continue to field a FCS Division 1AA football team because ..................... Easy: Georgetown provides extracurricular opportunity to student-athletes (in that order) to compete on behalf of the University, instilling lessons of leadership and commitment that will prepare them for life beyond college. If they do so amidst unnecessary (and in the case of the academic index, irrational) constraints put against them, it does not distract from the task at hand. Why does Georgetown play football? Why, asked John Kennedy in 1962, did Rice play Texas? Calling to mind that remarkable speech, football teams do things "not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win."

Russky's line re ivy aspiration seems right.
The justification re giving student athletes an extracurricular oppty doesn't really make sense for any sport now a days as almost all of the team members are recruited athletes--the extracurricular argument would only make sense if the team was mostly comprised of walk ons

- We have money to burn - A beautiful stadium - GU doesn't admit to mistakes - Football is an extracurricular activity - We aspire to be in the Ivy League
Compelling arguments. Is it now time to have an honest assessment of the football program?

- We have money to burn - A beautiful stadium - GU doesn't admit to mistakes - Football is an extracurricular activity - We aspire to be in the Ivy League Compelling arguments. Is it now time to have an honest assessment of the football program? Hey, I love honest self-assessments. But before we ask Tags and George Mitchell (L'61) to co-lead a blue ribbon commission, I would throw out a fundamental question: to what end? Because if you look at the state of affairs on the Hilltop at present, you would find that there are many extracurricular activities that are pretty below average as these things go. I'm sure the kids in the pep band and the cheerleading squad are by and large great people, but compared to the programs at most Division I schools, they are mediocre at best. The same goes for any number of other activities. But...at a certain point, who cares? What great damage is being done by them being lame? Is it ruining anyone's college experience? I would argue the answer is no... and the same goes for football. DFW knows the financial numbers better than I do, but if the program really is largely self-sustaining because it has a lot of alums who go on to banking jobs... then what is the harm being done, really?

RusskyHoya, I doubt the football program is self-sustaining. The Gridiron Club website hasn't been updated since June 2012, who know how much is being raised by alums. Does anyone know the numbers? What is the football budget? What are the sources of funds?

While Georgetown still plays its repertoire from the 1980s (because "Hey! Baby!" is a mere 56 years old), here's how it's done in the Patriot League by a school two thirds the size of GU. Check out the march to spell out L-E-H-I-G-H at the 7:30 mark.

Any good organization periodically assesses its activities-It seems that Gtwn does not really do this very often or perform self evaluation in a sophisticated way. - Football has a pretty high academic cost in addition to financial. A number of athletic programs are struggling with little prospect of success- all should be evaluated for upgrade/downgrade periodically. The same logic should also be applied to Gtwn's academic programs which really receive very little scrutiny compared to other top univ's. Suspect we'll have to wait for DeGioia's successor to take a real look at everything-
