I think Laettner was considered, along with Zo and Owens,, one of the prize HS class of '88 recruits. I believe at least in some rankings, Reggie Williams was considered the #1 recruit in his hs class too. Reggie Williams was definitely number 1. Wingate, his teammate who came out a year earlier, I believe was high also. Mugsy Bogues, another one of Reggie's high school teammate who graduated in the same class as David Wingate was ranked high also. They all attended Dunbar High School in Baltimore and had the number 1 team in the country for years. Reggie Lewis, a Celtic great, also played with the tandem, I think as a freshman. Reggie Williams, Reggie Lewis, and Mugsy all graduated together...Wingate the year before..

It's been many years ago.

If I remember correctly, Mourning, Billy Owens and Shawn Kemp were the big 3 out of HS, but there were plenty of other great prospects like Chris Jackson, LaPhonso Ellis, Laettner, Stanley Roberts, etc...

Here's the story on Dunbar HS - Baltimore - greatest HS team ever medium.com/@uarkpress/the-greatest-high-school-basketball-team-ever-4445533123a7#:~:text=The%201982%E2%80%931983%20Paul%20Laurence,impressive%20college%20and%20NBA%20careers.
Thanks, oh believe me I remember those teams like it was yesterday. DC schools weren't too bad themselves. Dunbar in DC, Spingarn and Mckinley Tech had great players back then and these schools along with Dematha, Gonzaga, St Anthony's, Carrol were area ranked schools with Dunbar and Dematha swinging back and forth with national rankings. This was the climate when Ewing was being recruited at Georgetown. Ewing had as his teammates David Wingate and Reggie Williams from Dunbar HS (Baltimore), Anthony "Redds" Jones from Dunbar HS (DC), Gene Smith and Billy Martin from McKinley Tech HS (DC), Michael Graham from Spingarn HS (DC), Eric Smith from Potomac HS (Potomac Maryland), Michael Jackson (I think Reston HS) (Reston VA). This is what I mean when I say recruit the best from the local DC, MD and VA area along with Bmore and then go after some high profile/high rank guys nationally. That should be our model.

I rather be corrected than for you to know that I am wrong and you let me be wrong. Thanks again.

Former teammate of Sibley. Also Jalen Johnsons little brother, and can really shoot it.

Man I would love to sit in on a Leonard Hamilton/FSU assistant call to a recruit. What is he telling them to get them to come to Tallahassee? They are always good but rarely elite but they usually have the talent to be elite.

I think he's had at least three three star (EDIT: I went back and could only find two in Kabengele and Vassell) players leave for the NBA before they graduated to be first round picks after Vassell gets drafted (not 100% sure, but this seems right). His talent development is excellent, plus his teams consistently win. And I've never seen that campus, but it's gotta be pretty, right?

Coach Hamilton keeps a pipeline of tall Africans coming to his program. His teams always have a load of talent and seem poised for national championships, but somehow dont make it. They always have several 7footers! What's his secret? How many are stars in the NBA? Just curious, honest!!

There are at least a few former FSU players in the NBA, and I think Malik Beasley and Jonathan Isaac are probably the best of them. There are also the two Clipper rookies (Kabengele and Terrance Mann - isn't Kabengele related to Mutumbo?) and Dwayne Bacon. I may be missing someone. If that's it, then there are two bigs from the last 3-4 years. That's not bad.

Yup thats it, the only other player that has made it recently was Xavier Rathan-Mayes. Hard to believe he has been the coach there for 17 years now

Thanks for the clarification. We still have acouple of Hoyas in the league, but none yet from the Ewing coaching era. And there's the guy, Bacon, with the Charlotte Hornets.

Hoping Omer becomes the first Ewing coached NBA Hoya. He's not a lock but has a good chance.

Not that our fanbase needs to be brought back down to earth, but this is a good reminder of the kind of talent it takes to keep fielding winning teams.
We're pretty excited about our group so far - with good reason - and yet none of them even make this list. And virtually every team's going to say "...and our guys are under-rated!"
Forget Nova, who seem to be scooping up top 50 kids yearly. UConn & DePaul both have multiple kids on the list and good recruiting teams like XU & Marquette show up, as usual.
It's great that Pat's got an early jump on commits this year, but he really needs to close it out strong for us to end up with a standout class.
