I thought this was interesting but unsure what thread to put in so I dropped it here... Williams point @ the 1-minute mark was very good imo... According to many reports, the freshman class is made up of very hard workers, I hope their dedication is matched by all involved with the program... I think Buzz is out of there after this year. UCLA job has opened up and I'm sure the other big programs he covets and has been waiting for will open up as well. All he needs is a decent showing in the tourney, maybe Sweet 16 to move.

Wasn't sure if it was best to put this under the Cap One thread, but placing it here instead:

The is cool. Team980 has been distributing meals to furloughed employees. And they also delivered vouchers to (presumably) Monday’s game. http://instagram.com/p/BsyjsozBqWx

Just checking: Ewing has a six year deal? Or until he gets tired and Ronny can take over...

Just checking: Ewing has a six year deal? Or until he gets tired and Ronny can take over... I believe this is a thing that could definitely happen.

I haven't read the game thread yet, but there are some things that Ewing did in this game that I think further demonstrate the strategic difficulties he is having:
(1) Creighton is an excellent offensive team, and Ewing benches his best defensive player (LeBlanc) for much of the second half, even as Creighton is nailing shots all over. I realize Kaleb has played decently well at times, but this wasn't the game to sit LeBlanc, not to mention LeBlanc had some nice offensive contributions in this game.
(2) At around 4:00, he swapped Mourning and Govan. While Mourning had the dunk (really not a hard shot given how he got the ball), he also took an awful long two. I realize Ewing might have wanted to give Govan a few seconds of rest there, but when the clock stops, you need to get a timeout and get your best player in there. Playing an entire minute of the last 4 minutes in a close game without your best player on the court (and instead having one of our worst players out there) is inexcusable.
(3) We had some nice defensive possessions, particularly in the first half of the game, but things really came apart in the second half. I realize Creighton is a great offensive team, but we lost this game because of defense, not offense. And yet, as I noted above, our best defensive player sat on the bench for much of the second half, even though our defense stunk. Explain how that makes any sense. Creighton scored 1.23 points per possession. Terrible.
(4) Our offense actually worked pretty well, and I am glad Akinjo got so many assists, but he was 0-6 from two. His awful two point shooting, which is now at 12.8% in the Big East is killing us. I realize you don't want him to lose his aggressiveness, but he needs to use his drives more to dish it out to others until he can shoot better. I would rather see him make more threes than twos - at least he makes those. I am not sure what Ewing does to coach Akinjo up here, but something's got to give. 0-6 in a close game could lose you the game.

When the New Big East was formed, we drove the negotiations thinking we were going to be the marquee brand. There was a heir of arrogance that I didn’t think sat well with the other programs, especially the newcomers. Life has a way of humbling you.

I haven't seen this anywhere else on this board, but I saw the release on Casual earlier this week and figure it bears noting that Patrick Ewing is reportedly getting a national radio show to discuss basketball (https://www.casualhoya.com/2019/1/24/18196480/patrick-ewing-to-host-exclusive-national-show-on-siriusxm). As someone who has long complained that Georgetown doesn't have the type of public outreach and access that other college basketball programs do, I think this is a great step. I don't currently have Sirius-XM, but this does tempt me to get it. I hope the radio program proves to be a success. Public exposure can pay dividends in recruiting, and it also helps keep fans involved and engaged with the program. Kudos to Patrick Ewing for taking what is, in my view, a long overdue step in increasing the public exposure for this program.
Note -- I just see the several posts above mine touting the same development. I wholeheartedly agree -- really happy to see this exposure for the program.

Meh, when winning we still have the best brand in the Big East. Georgetown was able to break into the cultural zeitgeist in the 80s in way that no other Big East (current or former) ever was, in way that was bigger than results on the court. Regardless of how much time passes that is always going to have value. Pair that with a team that makes the tournament consistently again and we should be the brand leader of the Big East. Even with all Villanova's success the last few years, no one really cares about them one way or the other nationally they way do/did about the Duke's, Ketucky's, UNLVs, and the Hoyas back in the day. Being the Marquee brand is more than just success on the court.

I lived the glory days. Those days are getting further and further in the rear view mirror. The brand is not what it was. I don’t see Gtown gear being sold or worn anywhere.

The GU brand is not what it was, but it is still the premiere brand in the BE. OF course Nova is the hottest brand lately, but the Hoyas have three NCAA finals in four years in the 80s, first black coach to win a D1 Championship, and lots of NCAA appearances, BE success and BET titles. Most important, over the years GU has put a lot of guys in the league, including iconic and HOF guys like Patrick, Deke and Iverson. Each of those three is a unique, well-known player who set the tone for his age. Heck, the NBA draft lottery was established because of one guy - Patrick Ewing. Iverson was the first hip hop hoopster.
It has been some years for these guys, but there is latent value - especially since Patrick returned to the program.
If he can get this team back near the top, the underlying value and tradition will propel this team beyond anything any other BE team could achieve. We are not there yet, but start piling up those Ws and add a couple more kids like Mac then let's see where we are. Dreaming? Absolutely. But the potential and the possibilities are real.

Of course it's not what it was. It never will be what it was. But, because of what it was, we have a branding advantage over every other Big East team that can't be replicated, as long as we don't abandon the core which we haven't. All it takes is winning enough to make the tournament to make us the more valuable Big East brand. While unrelated but still relevant, Mclung was the only Hoya that actually received applause from the St Johns crowd during the starting five announcements.

I agree the Hoyas have great potential. I believe thomas edison said there is no greater curse than potential. Fortunately the team is made up of hard workers and has a coach sho has a phenomenal work ethic so there is great reason to hope the team can reach that potential.
