It sort of looked to me like Kaleb was channeling a little bit of Jabril Trawick during Kenner. Slightly awkward and deliberate power slashes to the rim that had defenders occasionally on their heels, a change of pace with a few decent 3 balls when wide open, and general hard-headed physical play. Not a bad style to emulate for his talent level. We could use a guy like that.

Agreed, but I also thought Kaleb showed the same flashes last Kenner. However this year he does seem stronger and more athletic. Hopefully the change in playing style will open things up for him.

I have always liked Kaleb's game and thought he just needed some more opportunity and a little more confidence in himself. I could see him averaging close to 10 points a game this season just making all the dirty plays for the team. He is an aggressive offensive rebounder and gets lots of deflections and steals on defense that can hopefully turn into easy transition points for him. He needs to make his free throws, but I have always thought that was a confidence thing more than anything, because his shot mechanics look fine. He is not likely to to be the guy that they just give the ball to on the wing and ask him to create his own offense but he should be able to score in other ways. If he can play consistently well for the Hoyas on both ends of the floor this year it will be a huge boost for the team

Kaleb is going to be one of the team leaders in minutes this year. Really smart kid and he knows this is his chance to shine.

*I couldn't find his thread in this forum even though he's been here 3 years so created this one.
His 4-5 3 pointers and 24 points from yesterday are career highs.
His previous highs are 16 points vs UNC Ashville, and 14 points and 2-3 3 pointers vs Duke (in the 4th game of his freshman year).
I think we have to go back to Bradley "Secret Weapon" Hayes for someone who wasn't counted on to break the 20 point barrier (even against low level teams) Reggie Cameron, Nikita Mescherikov, Omar Wattad, Nate Lubick never broke the 20 game barrier.

I knew this guy had a lot in him. I thought he was restricted, but last year, apart from lack of aggressiveness--offensively, I did not see a lot of mistakes. I am glad he has the green light and is stepping up. It's great when a coach has confidence in you and and says, Go!!

It seemed like people were relegating Johnson to the 'needs to be on the bench' role after the season opener. I think he's just scratching the surface of what he can do. Now he needs to put up consistent double digit games and replicate it against higher competition to get more believers on the bandwagon.

I'm glad Kaleb is playing well but we need to put on the brakes a bit. If he can keep his shot looking good then he can have a good year. Often times his problems in previous years came when he tried to do too much, he's definitely able to do more this year but needs to continue to play within himself and the offense. His success will be key to keeping things open for the guards driving and the bigs posting so I hope his shot does continue to have good arc and he doesn't push too much.
Like every position on the roster, we will need to play the hot hand. If Pickett is having a great game and Kaleb is too loose with the ball, then I hope to see more Pickett in that game.

Kaleb should benefit from Ewing's new style of play more than any other player. He is a tenacious defender who can guard mobile forwards, which will get him on the court even absent strong offensive production. What we saw against UMES is revelatory on the other end - his slashes were finished, not fumbled as previously, and he opened the lanes with his range. If that sweet lefty stroke keeps falling, we could see an offensive explosion to go with his aggressive D. So much better suited to the wide open style of play we are testing out. Add a jab step and a pull up and he would be lethal.

I was SO happy to see Kaleb play well on Saturday and put up some big numbers that, I hope, will help him become more confident and assertive. He is a plus defender and athlete who we need to play a major role during the next two years.

While we may not (or maybe we will) see more 24-point games from Kaleb this season, he's definitely taken a leap over the last two games from anything we saw, certainly last year.
Shooting 5-9 from 3 over the first 3 games, he has eclipsed his total number of made 3s from sophomore year (when he finished 3-12). If he can get into a groove of giving 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, along with solid defense, that'd be a much better junior year than I'd expected from him.

I'd take just 8ppg, solid defense & limited turnovers.

Kaleb Johnson stats:
2016-17: FG %: 44.2%; 3PT %: 25.0%; FT %: 51.1%
2017-18: FG %: 70.4%; 3PT %: 63.6%; FT %: 75.0%
Yes, it's a small sample vs. lousy competition. But that doesn't explain his FT %, or his 3PT % on open threes. He is playing with a high level of confidence and looks like a totally different player out there. If this level of play continues, it will make a huge difference in Big East games.

I predict that Kaleb will have a more productive year as a senior at Georgetown than his brother does as a freshman at Kentucky. Plus his bro could be a one and done. No way I trade one for the other right now.

Another great game for Most Improved Player Kaleb! 7 of 8 from the line! I'm going to go ahead and thank Coach Ice Wallace. 64% 2FG 57% 3FG 81% FT 4.3 RBs I know, the competition... but that has knowing to do with FT% improved from 51%.
