I wonder if we have an assistant dedicated to advanced stats? I also wonder if we have someone on the BBall staff who is strictly a performance/strength coach? There was a post article that Diamond Stone commented on how MD set a plan in place for him on the strength/performance end and that was customized for him.
If JTIII could take some of his currently bloated salary (based on performance) and put that towards these two positions, I think it could do a few things:
1) Help with player development, 2) Help with recruiting, 3) Help an old school coach realize that his hard headedness (ie..spin dribble, center at high post, never recruit a true point, etc) could be his downfall if he doesn't change the approach.

I agree. Additionally I think a sports psychologist should be a position in the AD. Not necessarily only for Men's BB but the mental game is a very under-appreciated part of all athletics.

I do think there should be someone conversant on advanced analytical principles and my sense is that we do not have that. Whether that's an assistant or even just a consultant, I do think it can be incredibly helpful in identifying trends, etc.
The fact that Hopkins played so much and used so many possessions as a junior while being hugely inefficient tells me nobody on the staff realized that it was happening, at least from a statistical standpoint.

I just think that the staff, like a lot of folks, believe that metrics are not as accurate or helpful as many claim, which is a legitimate viewpoint.

I asked JTIII earlier this season about advanced stats. He says that the team has "a guy" to help them with it and that he's learning to utilize it. He declined, however, to say how, or even if, it's changed how he coaches or what the team specifically looks at.

We were proactive and thinking outside-the-box in hiring Pops and it paid off handsomely. We have been reactive and cautious ever since and have suffered tremendously.

"Suffered Tremendously": - NCAA Seeds: 4, 2, 3, 6, 3, 2, 2, 7 - Several top 25 and top 10 rankings - KenPom rankings of: 45, 13, 4, 8, 34, 16, 36, 16, 12, 65, 25, 74 (subject to change) - Winner of the Big East regular season title (twice) - Made Big East Tournament championship game (three times) - Winner of the Big East tournament (once) - 4 of 8 years got past the first round - 2 Sweet 16's - 1 Final Four Obviously, given our seeding, we "should" have more Sweet 16's. And that makes us, as fans, unhappy. But, the record above is superior to that of most Division I teams, and squarely puts us among the best Division I teams since JT3 has taken the helm. It might not be what we want, especially in March, but to call it suffering is silly.

Don't need anything on advanced metrics other than having an assistant read this board!

Take Esherick-recruited 2007 team away and it looks a lot worse. NCAA performance matters. No teams hang seed banners.

None of them were Esh players.. I find it hard to give a coach credit for a player when the kid never played for him, all the players on the 2006-2007 team were JT3 kids in my view..

Plus Hibbert stunk as a freshman and significantly improved. It's highly debatable that that would've happened under Esherick.

I just think that the staff, like a lot of folks, believe that metrics are not as accurate or helpful as many claim, which is a legitimate viewpoint. Is there a major downside to having such advanced analytics at your disposal? Yes if you rely of plus minus it's a deceptive stat. Also defensive metric usually don't tell the full story since it's mostly based on steals and blocks. I think they are using those metrics which is why Cameron is playing so much. Those advanced metrics don't measure how bad Cameron's D is. You don't need metrics to see that people are blowing by him for the layup or forcing govan or Hayes to cover and pick up the foul. Half the time he gets caught in no mans land and is actually not guarding anyone. It's like playing defense with a straight jacket on. But if you just looked at advanced metrics it doesn't look that bad because his offense is okay, he gets some rebounds and it cannot measure defense other than some steals and blocks which he also gets.

Cameron has the worst Defensive rating on the team according to the Sports Reference site.. His poor D can be seen by the naked eye & the advanced #'s.. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/georgetown/2016.html

Given the fact that we have a specialized Sports Management masters program, there are kids on campus who would crawl over broken glass to fill this role for the team. Not saying it's needed, but there's definitely people to do it if we want it.
I don't think it would improve recruiting at all, really. The paucity of consistent info and stats at the HS level makes it very hard to do that kind of analysis. What we need to do if we want to improve our recruiting is open up the checkbook and get a bagman.

Here's the key stat: 14-14. Don't need to run the Cray too hard to come up with that.

It might not be what we want, especially in March, but to call it suffering is silly. So does that merit $3M? No. Is that really a record that merits $3M? Btw, why didn't you include his overall record in making the NCAA Tournament? It's becoming harder to hide the fact that he is not getting there regularly. Does that merit $3M? You may ask what are my expectations. I'll answer something that merits $3M, which I think is a pretty good record, Top 25 yearly (except the rebuilding year after a championship), and reaching the NCAAs 4 out of 5 years (because we'll have that rebuilding year after a championship). That merits $3M. Of the titles awarded in the NBE, Villanova has won 3 and Providence 1. We haven't reached the championship game. Until when do we hide in the past and not face what is happening in the present to be able to be competing for titles in the future? If we're stuck with the Thompsons, then JT3 has to change his approach to offense, defense and recruiting. He is responsible for his assistant coaches, for his recruits and for the brand.

JT3 closed the deal on Jeff Green and Ewing Jr didn't want to come with Esh at the helm. Not quite. 1. Green had committed previously but there were grade issues were still being worked out by the time of the coaching change. 2. Patrick Jr. had wanted to come to Georgetown but there was a dispute between Mom and Dad and she wanted him to go to school somewhere else--hence, his selection of Bloomington, IN.
