Don't need to go much farther than Jerry Nichols' 360 slam against Morgan State. Immediate benching and sideline reaming by JT, Jr. The other player who could never get out of the dog house was that short PG from the 1990s who loved to chuck it from deep. Was it Eric Myles? Might have been David Edwards. I think he eventually transferred to Texas A&M. I was actually thinking of Eric Myles. He came in one game at McDonough and swished a deep 3 and JT Jr. immediately benched him. Worst reaming after a made 3 ever. Edwards was actually a potentially awesome player. Super fast, shifty, and a dime dropper. Went on to do pretty well at his transfer school. Pops couldn't handle his style of play.

Myles and Edwards were both 5'10 PGs. Maybe. Eric Myles did arrive the same year as AI and also stayed two years. He shot 40% from three as a frosh, got about 9 mins/game. As a soph -- after the arrival of Victor Page, he barely played then transferred out. David Edwards was from NYC. He averaged 41 ppg at Jackson HS in Queens. He played one year at GU, '89/'90. He could be described as AI before AI. OK, not THAT good, but similar game. Quick, fast, fearless, a little undisciplined or a major talented freelancer, depending on your POV. He shot 36% from Three and averaged nearly 5 Assists per game, and 5.4 PPG. He was never a starter, but he did average 20 mpg his one year - as a freshman. I really liked him. But JT didn't appreciate his game. He transferred to Texas A&M and had quite a career there. At the time he graduated he was one of 7 guys in NCAA history to have 1200 points, 650 assists, 250 steals & 400 rebounds. Eric Micoud, 6'1, was born in France and played two years at GU. As a frosh he started 8 games and averaged about 17 mpg. The next year he averaged half as many minutes. He shot treys at 31% year 1, and 27% year 2. Micoud was a serviceable but not outstanding member of the team. His move to the French Foreign Legion happened very late in the school year, maybe early summer. And, as it happened, it conveniently opened up a roster spot for a very late Hoya signee - Allen Iverson, who had to use his get out of jail free card, then manage to get his HS diploma outside of normal school classrooms. To his credit, AI did. He showed up at Kenner in July and blew everyone's minds. You know the rest. David Edwards we had A nickname for him "Give me the Ball" a couple of quick claps and you never saw the ball again until he put a shot up. Really don't think his transfer was an issue between him and Thompson, more so Edwards senior who was quite the ball player in his day who continually harrased JT on how to use and play his son.

I remember those kinds of comments and perception. Perhaps they applied to his HS game. But at GU, while playing behind Tillmon and Bryant, he got 20 minutes/game and averaged 5 assists and 5.4 points. You may well be right about Edwards Sr.... he had an influence on the decision. But JT and David Edwards had their own issues too. By the time AI arrived, JT had changed his tune. He was astonishingly tolerant of AI's style of play. Of course, AI was a once in a career talent for a HC - if he's lucky! Sleepy, were you disappointed when David Edwards left? I know I was.

I don't post often since I like to keep it more casual but here it goes. Dave Edwards was part of the 89-90 Freshman class that included Mike Sabol, who I think started the UNC game, Mike Tate/Vinson, Maryland player of the year, Antoine Stoudemire, who hit 6 3 against Florida international I think but then got sick with what was probably mono. I'd have to check the history page since I'm not sure if that was the entire class. I do know that none of these guys panned out and all transferred. The next year when tilmon and Bryant were gone we did not have the talent around Zo and deke. Joey brown came in to run the point, one of my favorite all time Hoyas, but I'm afraid to even check his shooting percentages. Back to Dave Edwards, I don't recall anything about his dad or pt. some guys were selling t-shirts that said Dave the dish Edwards that had a caricature of him on it to which Edwards apparently said my head looks funny. He had an incredible handle and could break a press, not a ball hog. I do recall him being in my room to study for a final with my roommate, briefly. He left and said he'd be right back, but I don't recall him coming back. So my recollection of him transferring, now this is pre-internets and official gossip, was because of classroom issues. Some more info, Edwards did have somewhat successful career after transferring and then appeared in a champions commercial that listed his career assists. Stoudemire ended up at Oregon, Tate/Vinson, who may have had a knee injury, who was also studying with my roommate went to jmu, and mike Sabol I think transferred to American.

Am I reading that correctly that 4 members of a class transfered out? Can you imagine the uproar if that happened now? Especially if one had the career that Edwards had?

True story when pops got mad at a fan not a player. When the Hoyas played in the Cap Centre I had season tickets 3 rows behind the bench. All those who had season tickets located there knew the "rule" not to yell coaching moves at pops, such as, "Put in X!" or yelling for a timeout. One game, a somewhat portly fan who was not a regular season ticket holder and obviously wasn't aware of the "rule" shouted something at pops. Pops whirled around and yelled back, "What do you know about the game you fat Edited!" Same thing happened in the second half of a game at McDonough my sophomore year, when a fan (likely prhoya's relative) "advised" JTII to put my classmate Mike Frazier (our version of B. Hayes) in the game. Classic.

The article has a significant - and repeated - factual inaccuracy, in that it states that the winner of the BET would get an automatic bid to the NCAAs. In fact, the bid was not automatic. Syracuse beat us in the semis and Nova in the final, but we got the bid. Best NCAA selection show ever.

Too many stories from that week in Syracuse to relate, but agree on the NCAA selection. Evil denied.

This is urban legend but I've heard it from multiple sources. Pops was notoriously brutal during practice, and made a point of papering the doors so no one could watch. Some kid, either because he didn't get the message or was merely lost, casually walked into the gym mid-practice and made himself comfortable. Pops stopped the proceedings on a dime and went berserk, like a six foot ten grizzly bear that hadn't been fed in two weeks. Fearing for his life, the kid grabbed his parka and ran out of the building. He did not stop until he reached the other side of the Key Bridge.

Sounds right. Fall of my Senior year (10/84), my roommate and I were cutting across Yates roof on our way home from After hours at the Pub. It was approximately 5 am or so and we had had a few beers. As we approached the track area, we were stopped by the hulking figure of Big John with a flashlight and his booming baritone, demanding to know where we thought we were going. We quietly answered "home" and took another route before he could get mad.
For historical perspective, running in the Yates track at dawn was what Big John called "Midnight Madness" back in the day.

You must have sobered up - a drunk college kid would have gone with "mind your own business." And never seen again.
