DFW, I thought Owinje was supposed to be a scorer? I never remember reading anything about his defense (and he wasn't near the reported size of this guy). Both offense and defense were underwhelming, to say the least.

Owinje reportedly had a 20 ppg average at his JUCO, but I don't remember any smack about his defense. Of course we didn't get to see him show anything as a Hoya. His behind musta been glued to the bench.

Owinje was a JC All American and SF who played at a lower level JC--they have different divisions of play too. He was overmatched, but this "defensive stopper" GARBAGE is crap. Especially when the guy who was considered the defensive stopper (Boubacar Aw) played with Owinje for his 2 seasons at GU. For the record NDiaye is nothing like Owinje--he played at one of the most talented JC Schools in country and against top flight competition. While he's not going to be an All Big East player, he is someone more than capable of helping out and doing the little things that this team could really benefit from having---rebound and shot blocking. He runs the floor like a guard and has outstanding athleticism which helps him finish down low. He's also a 6'10/6'11 player where Owinje was 6'7.

I remember the basketball banquet his last year that the coaches made some comments about that. Whether or not he would have been any good anyway, I don't know; but injuries were a big factor.

I don't know how good N'diaye is, but I'm always skeptical of JUCO players. Wasn't Trez Kilpatrick a 20 ppg scorer? Remember Aaron Petway? I know everyone can point to Steve Francis and Jerome Williams, so there are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions.

Small update from out of L.A. where the SC Trojans are still waiting on a decision from Ndiaye www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/8427796Re: JuCo "exceptions" -- I have to look at the tremendous contribution made by JP Batista on the Zags' squad this past year. Also a favorite "peer" among the students. So let's hope that Ndiaye is out of that kind of exceptional mold if he signs with us. Meanwhile, Washington State University (which is where Ndiaye was reportedly visiting this coming weekend) just reported they had signed a PF.

The Washington State message boards are saying that Ndiaye's weekend visit did not happen, and no word on whether it will be rescheduled. I think we can expect a decision this week.

Tre Simmons at Washington another example of what a JuCo transfer can do for you. Kid averaged 16 pts, 5 rebs, 1.3 steals, and hit above 40% from the three this year... that said he is a cousin of Donny Marshall.

This is disappointing in the sense that I think Ndiaye could have helped us out next year, but, at the same time, we can have an extra scholarship for 2006 that we would have otherwise given to Ndiaye, provided that the staff does not find a suitable big for next season. That isn't exactly a bad thing given the talent in 2006.

This is pretty interesting. Apparently the new coach out there Tim "Pink" Floyd is out strealing commited recruits throughout the country. This is obviously not the case here, but the word is that he's going after verbal commits and getting them to turn. Very questionable tactics, but the teams he's putting together looks pretty good. www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/8440264Here is the article talking about how he's stolen 3 recruits already...

As attractive as it is to haev our name in play on some of these kids, in order to really build a program with a solid base, you have to be focused, offer early to show your commitment to the kids, and get kids with as much character as skill. Every time one of these "wafflers" goes somewhere else, I breathe a sigh of relief.

Blurb from the LA Times below. I'd nearly forgotten it, but both Ndiaye and his CSI teammate Mohamed Kone gave somewhat soft "verbals" to U of San Diego back in the fall. Kone initially, then Ndiaye who wanted to follow Kone and continue playing together. That may be where both originally wanted to play straight out of h.s. That would have been one major drop-off of "big" onto one WCC team. Am sure the USD coach never figured they'd blow up reputation-wise and end up in Big 12 and PAC 10, respectively.
--------------------------------------- College Basketball
USC Coach Tim Floyd landed his sixth recruit — and third big man — of the late signing period when the Trojans received long-awaited paperwork from College of Southern Idaho's Abdoulaye Ndiaye, a 6-foot-11, 220-pound center from Dakar, Senegal. Ndiaye, who originally signed with San Diego, averaged 9.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and shot 64.2% from the field as a sophomore at CSI and also visited Florida State and Georgetown.

How can we possibly have any JUCO conversations without mentioning (particularly in light of the Pittsnogle, big men from outside thread) the one and only Lee Scruggs!?
Somehow I don't see JTIII going for too many transfers - wouldn't seem to be much differnt from the results this year (i.e., kids who learned a different system trying to pick his up withough 4 years to learn)..

Lee Scruggs...maybe the most frustrating player I've seen since I became a fan.
Only eligible two semesters. Best offensive rebounder we've had since Jerome Williams (or maybe even better) as he would just slide in between defenders blocking out.
But of course, he was never actually in the paint to do that, because he had just jacked a three.
Him and Harvey. Drove me mad.

Just tall and long and slithery -- almost impossible to block out. But no one has a motor like Jerome, so he's the better rebounder. But if Lee hadn't wanted to be a 3 pt shooter, he'd have been better on the O boards.
