The XC season is about to start, but at Georgetown things are up in the air, especially on the men's side with no head coach, loss of seven meets, and lack of clarity about what recruits are still coming. The women's side is clearer as they didn't suffer the same cancellations as the men. I would imagine the recruits listed on the new recruits thread are still coming (plus a surprise). Anyway, Track and Field News thinks highly enough of the women's squad to rank them 3rd in the nation in the preseason issue, based of 5 or the seven top runners in the NCAA XC meet returning. The men, as expected are not ranked.

Thanks for the flotrack ratings, hoyatrackdad. Many individual posters on letsrun.com had the Hoyas ranked among the top 25, but I think T&F News was being conservative because of the uncertainties. That plus the Hoyas have a history of underperforming in the NCAA XC race. Until the men perform up to their expectations in the big meet, I think some sources will continue to underrate them. It was also my understanding that the seven lost meets will be spread over the three seasons, which would make the sanctions more palatable. However, one of the seasons will have to cancel three meets, and if that season is XC, it will be hard to make points for an at large bid, so the Hoyas will have to run well in regionals. I think that Collin graduated and is spending his final year of eligibility at Stanford as a graduate student. Good move for him, because of both academics and two of the track coaches there are Georgetown grads. I believe the other transfer was Tyler Anyan, who transferred to Florida State. He hadn't appeared in the results for Georgetown in two years.

As far as the recruits go, we knew about Adam Barnard, but we didn't know about Reilly Bloomer from the track city of Eugene, OR. They did not have Conor Ross listed. He is a middle distance runner, but apparently has good range. All of the candidates that flotrack listed for 5th man are middle distance runners. While they are fabulous 800/1500m runners, the fact that the men run 10K at the NCAA meet makes the jump in distance harder for the men than for the women middle distance runners running 6K. Edit: Actually, we had Reilly Bloomer on our radar.

Two runners that were not mentioned in the flotrack article, who might contribute this year, are Christian Alvarado and Charles Cooper, both sophomores. Both had good credentials coming out of HS. Plus Christian went to lic's HS, so he must be good.

Right, and there may be a few more who are in the mix. The team is still deep with a lot of talent. My hope is that they will be able to move past the distractions (that really started before the track season was over)and re-focus, and I have a feeling they will.

Nevada and Hoyatrackdad, thanks for the update. Hoya men might not have that low stick but they do have quality depth. Lots of solid runners with good kicks.

In the "official" pre-season XC rankings (USTFCCCA poll) the men are rated 2nd in their region right behind Nova and nationally ranked 16th. The women are ranked first in the region and 5th nationally.

From guhoyas.com: The men’s team will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 12 with the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The women open the season the same day at the JMU Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.

The XC men's and women's schedules are out. The men have six scheduled meets (that is, if they make the NCAAs) and the women have seven scheduled meets (again considering they are chosen to go to the NCAA). The men go from Sept. 12 to Oct. 2 without a meet, while the women have one meet in that time frame. So, if the XC team loses one meet, that means the indoor and outdoor meets will probably be down three per season.

Tomorrow we will see the men's and women's XC teams for the first time after the hectic events of the past few months. The men go to Navy and the women to JMU.

I don't know if we will run a full men's team, but we should win the Navy meet. The entries are Navy welcomes American, Bowie St., George Washington, Georgetown, Loyola and McDaniel. Since it is on Navy's home course, they should be the toughest opponents.

We finished 2nd to Navy, 25-42. I think our runners were going pretty easily as it is an early season meet. We ran seven guys including two of our middle distance guys, but we didn't run some of the guys, who would be expected to make the top 7 at BE and Regionals. I think Jon Green (who should be out top XC guy), Darren Fahy, and Amos Bartelsmeyer were running especially easy in this race. I was impressed with Christian Alvarado, who finished 4th; good start for him (Lic should be pleased).
The Hoyas: 3. Mike Lederhouse 25:02.36 (good race for this miler over the 5 mile course) 4. Christian Alvarado 25:05.77 8. Connor Sheryak 25:15.53 (good race for Connor as he will be competing for a top 7 position) 15. Jon Green 25:42.44 16. Darren Fahy 25:42.85 17. Amos Bartelsmeyer 25:43.25 26. Nick Golebiowski 26:17.98

In the flotrack article they mentioned Ryan Gil and Scott Carpenter, who didn't run vs Navy. Additionally, Ahmed Bile, Jon Murray, and recruit Adam Barnard did not run.

Meanwhile over at JMU,the women placed five runners in the top seven to win the JMU invitational.
1. Sam Nadel 18:37.3 2. Piper Donaghu 18:43.8 3. Autumn Eastman 18:50.4 6. Kennedy Wiesner 19:31.4 7. Heather Martin 19:45.7 13 Aleta Looker 20:15.6 18. Jocelyn Hubbard 20:40.3
The course was 5.2K. Several of the top runners did not take part, including Haley Pierce, Andrea Keklak, and Sarah Cotton, and again no freshmen.

The national polls this week have the Hoyas in the same spots as the preseason: men #16, women #5. Other BE teams are #7 for the Nova men and #25 for the Provy men; #8 for the Provy women, #23 for the Nova women.
