He got good players in. The challenge was getting and keeping them on the floor if I recall correctly.

We learned back in the 80s not to underestimate Mullin.

Mullin just plucked Barry "Slice" Rohrssen from Kentucky as an assistant. He's a very good recruiter with strong NYC ties, great hire for the Johnnies.

St John's has to be a huge favorite for Diallo now.

Not just because the guy is a great recruiter of the NYC area (even though that's probably the biggest reason) but also because SJU just pulled a highly paid and highly regarded assistant from the most dominant program in the country over the last several years. Great for perception, makes a statement that St. John's is a force to be reckoned with and can hang with the big boys. He's only hired 2 assistants thus far, correct? Both of whom are known as recruiters, I believe (though Slice had a run as a head coach). Will be interesting to see who gets the nod as the 3rd guy. I would think Mullin might want somebody a little older and more established who he could lean on for general program management and in game strategy. Maybe Slice doubles as that guy though, and he goes for another younger recruiting type, or someone with AAU ties or something? They're suddenly a very interesting program to follow.

The original rumour before any of the assistants were hired was Abdelsmaih, Slice and PJ Carlisemo for X's and O's. Everything so far has been going according to that plan.

Rumor is that they are paying $450K to Rohrssen alone. Wow, SJU is really paying to play, and this is a great sign that they may finally be back. I really think if they start landing lottery pick type players, the casual New York fans will show up in droves. This will be especially amazing for the BET.

247 showing them as the crystal ball for Diallo as well for what that is worth. I think we can officially stop cheering on the potential rise of St. Johns.

Evan Daniels @evandaniels 15m Mustapha Heron has reopened his recruitment, per @adamfinkelstein. Top 20 player in the 2016 class.
Evan Daniels @evandaniels 14m I think it'd be safe to classify St. John's as the new team to beat for Mustapha Heron. Slice Rohrssen has a strong connection to his father
Slice making his mark already

Looks like they're favorites for LoVett and they just wrangled free from a previous 2/3-star commit. So far, so good.
They're still gonna be hot garbage in '15-'16, but if they get Heron and assorted other top-50 kids in '16 -- watch out.

No Brandon Sampson for SJU. They could have used him next year.

NYC, you do know they are said to be getting both Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa back next season too, right? They have also signed four Three stars for 2015 and are still after more kids who would be eligible right away. No doubt, the following season will see a much stronger lineup, but leading shot blocker Obekpa and former 5 star guard Jordan are a couple of key pieces for next year's team.
