Liked him personally, but this seemed inevitable.
Dana O'Neil@espndanaoneil·3m3 minutes ago St Johns announces Steve Lavin out as head coach. Mutually agree to part ways

Initial list of names for the St. John's opening, from a variety of sources: Danny Hurley (Rhode Island), Richard Pitino (Minnesota), Steve Masiello (Manhattan) and Mike Hopkins (Syracuse assistant and heir apparent to Jim Boeheim).
Would be interesting if Danny Hurley gets this job and Bobby Hurley takes the DePaul job.

I hope one of the Hurley brothers get this job. Agreed. Both have proven to be very good coaches and the Hurleys have a lot of pull in the area. The names popping up on Twitter so far from Zagoria and Goodman are Dan Hurley, Chris Mullin, and Steve Masiello. How wild would it be if St. John's gets Dan Hurley and DePaul gets Bobby Hurley?

Hopkins would make sense. He'd stay for three years and then go back to Syracuse, when Boeheim retires. Meanwhile, we'd see three years of a zone defense in Jamaica.

Hopkins is dirty -- he is part of the slime at SU. I do not even know if he is still the heir apparent there.
Plus, what would he bring in terms of recruiting or Xs and Os? And if he were just taking the job until Jimmy B. retired, SJU would be putting itself in a foreseeable mess in a few years.

Would love to see Mark Jackson back at St. John's, but I'm sure it's a long shot.

Little Pitino would be fun. They struggled this year, but he won the NIT last year with the Gophers. He's young and hungry, and presumably would have an easier time recruiting to NYC than to Minneapolis. Gophers have been playing the same style as L'Ville has been, which is generally fun to watch. Also, it'd be fun for the Big East to poach a Big 10 school's coach.

Why would Richard Pitino take this job? This is an enormous rebuild. Obekpa seems like to be gone and Rysheed Jordan seemed like he had checked out in January, so both of those guys are huge question marks. So you're left with nobody with more than 200 minutes experience in a season and two three-star recruits. I think there's a better chance they go 0-18 in the conference next year than that they get Richard Pitino.

Pitino isn’t exactly beloved in Minnesota and it’s probably easier to recruit top talent to St Johns. Personally Danny Hurley would be my guy.

Was surprised that there were reports of contract extension discussions earlier this week, not upset by this development at all. Lavin simply could not recruit NYC. The lack of NYC metro area players on that team was astounding.
Either one of the Hurleys should be offered the job. I like the idea of Pitino, but his current job is probably better in terms of resources and conference but who knows.
Do not want to see Mullin or Mark Jackson, they would be in over their heads with recruiting/academics and all the other things that go into running a college program versus a professional team.
