Nothing but speculation here, but with the Big 12 (ie.10) getting left out of the football title game thus leaving millions on the table, I would anticipate a real push to either get an exemption from the NCAA on a football title game or a push to add two more teams. Nobody really makes sense here from an expansion standpoint but they did add West Virginia and that didn't make sense geographically. I also think that conference wouldn't want to water down their football so teams like Cincinnati and Memphis would probably be out. SMU just isn't good enough nor is Houston as they would geographically make the most sense. This would also require Fox & ESPN to increase their media payouts I would think.
If something like this happens this offseason, that could be the end of the dominoes. You would have the PAC-12 at 12, the Big 12 at 12, the ACC, B1G and SEC all at 14. This would leave UConn permanently out and potentially Memphis or Cincy out of the big football money but with all the expenses of football.

We've been discussing this separately in the College Football thread. Latest rumors involve expansion to absorb Cincinnati, together with Memphis, Central Florida, Southern Methodist and/or South Florida; one report amazingly had Nebraska leaving the Big Ten and returning to the Big 12. None of the proposals include UConn.
As for the likelihood of the NCAA exemption request being granted. . .I doubt it. The NCAA specifically set the twelve-school number to force conferences to expand.
The upshot would be, ultimately, Connecticut finding itself in the AAC with a group of institutions with which it would have absolutely nothing (save for a lousy football team) in common. The posters at the Boneyard forum are convinced that UConn will gain entry into the Big Ten. They are delusional.
