If you read the Boneyard (their basketball forum), you can see that there is a split among UConn fans regarding the NBE, as they call it. Some view it as a mid-major, some are envious. They are united in their displeasure that football caused them to be left out of the NBE. I believe, given their druthers, that UConn followers would be thrilled to be back in with us. It doesn't mean we have to like them. It would make the Big East that much more difficult for ESPN to try to ignore, as Storrs isn't all that far from Bristol. I, for one, would love to have another in-league hated rival. I'd rather just watch their football team sink the rest of their athletic program into mediocrity that will lead to obscurity as they hold onto their hope for a Big 10 bid. Maybe a far fetched dream, may be not.

BE showing signs of a greatly improved conference this year. Will be tough to live up to our 2nd place prediction.

FLHoya are we allowed to call this St. John's win a good one for the conference? Because it is. What are you asking me for? Is the goodness of Syracuse losing ever up for debate?

At the half, Xavier leads Alabama 41-30 in Cincinnati. That's with Matt Stainbrook not even scoring in the first half. Looks like the Big East is poised to go four for five today.

Damn Uconn Drop F-Ball and come home… touch.courant.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-82200906/UConn has already been through the disintegration of one league. Are they on board another sinking ship? According to a Nashville radio station, Cincinnati and Memphis are about to abandon the American Athletic Conference and climb aboard the Big 12. “I am being told that Fred Smith [Memphis-based FedEx CEO] is opening up his checkbook and helping easy this process along,” said Darren McFarland, host of a sports talk show on ESPN radio in Nashville. Here’s the full story. It’s certainly true that the Big 12, which is down to 10 schools, has been looking to add schools (rather than change its name, one imagines) and, unlike the Big 10 or ACC, has not been looking to the East Coast. So the AAC, with its schools in the Midwest, Mississippi Valley and the south, could be ripe for raiding. Cincinnati AD Mike Bohn, when he was hired last February, made no secret of his ambition to take the program to one of the power conferences. Memphis' football program is much improved this year. If Memphis and Cincinnati jump, the AAC will lose two of its better basketball programs, weakening the league still further for UConn’s longterm interests. So, pressure for UConn to somehow get itself into a power conference, or a better basketball situation, will greatly intensify. And the AAC will be right back into turmoil, searching for new schools. … Wonderful. No idea what's true here, but adding Cincy and Memphis would add very little to the Big 12, especially in football. Obviously there are "grant of rights" and financial issues in the way, but adding Florida State and Clemson would be much more valuable to the Big 12.

At the risk of hijacking my own thread. . .
I did a little internet research on Big 12 expansion rumors, and it seems that there has been talk going back to the summer, which largely contemplates raiding the AAC. According to various sources, the goal is to bring some more easterly schools into the conference to reduce West Virginia's travel burdens. Almost all of the rumors include Cincinnati making the move, and then it gets interesting. One proposal has SMU, Central Florida and South Florida joining Cincinnati in the Big 12, another just has Memphis going with the Bearcats, and a third has Cincinnati and Nebraska (!!) making the move from the Big Ten. Apparently the AAC is so concerned by the rumors that the league trying to get grant-of-rights from all league members to make defection less palatable.
In the same regard, our friends at UConn are convinced that the move of the 2018 Big Ten Conference basketball tournament to Madison Square Garden is an indication that Cincinnati and UConn are bound for the Big Ten ("they'll never sell out the Garden without us" is a common theme). I'm not sure that adding the State of Connecticut to the Big Ten footprint really adds a whole lot, and I doubt that Ohio State would be willing to let Cincinnati join the Big Ten.

Similarly, Buzz Williams was spouting off about the P-5 schools breaking away from the NCAA within two years in all sports. All in all, a lot of delusion going around.

In a real "defensive struggle," Xavier defeated Alabama 97-84. The Musketeers dominated, and this was an 18-20 point in the second half.

Cincinnati and Memphis make sense. And I'm sure they want enough teams ASAP to have two divisions and a football conference championship to get a true champion. SMU/CFU/SFU wold be foolish as those are the scraps that tried to join the old expanded Big East. Big Ten has alot of money but I think they aren't very smart at the top. Adding Rutgers was such a bad decision and now they are stuck with them.

As long as we don't end up with anyone from the AAC (outside of UConn or maybe Memphis) I don't care what the power football conferences do to them.

The B1G thought, surprisingly to those of us who reside in the metropolitan New York area, that bringing Rutgers into the conference would bring New York City and its environs as well. Here's a secret for Jim Delaney and his associates at B1G headquarters in Chicago: nobody in New York who did not go to Rutgers cares about Rutgers football and basketball. What's more, very few New Jerseyans care about Rutgers football and basketball. With all due respect to those of you in the heartland, but this is not Iowa City, Columbus or Ann Arbor. There is too much competition for the athletic sports dollar in New York to care at all about a team that plays 45 minutes outside of the city. Did I watch more of the Big Ten Network this year than last? Sure. I enjoyed watching NJIT beat Michigan yesterday. That doesn't mean I'll choose to watch Rutgers against another B1G school if there's something else on of interest.

George Washington Colonials are playing Charlotte at Verizon right now on "our Court", LOL. (Still says Hoyas on the baseline and the big Georgetown logo at half court).

Good weekend for teams named "Highlanders." That is Radford's first win ever against an ACC school. The Hokies had a six point lead with 2:03 left, and did not score again.
Hope you're enjoying your new digs, Buzz. Maybe you should ease up on talking about how the P5 conferences are going to break away in basketball as well, and instead work on beating mid-majors in your own backyard like Radford and Appalachian State.
