I don't know. I kind of feel like we should let them have this, since we got the much more important title in 1984

Can we have a new category of best team not to win a title against coked up point guard and dying leprechaun?

That's a tough final two. Georgetown never wins user polls but, in this case, it's really close. I can't be unbiased enough to choose rationally so I voted for the Hoyas 10 times or so.

Sigh! The more I voted the further the Hoyas got behind.

Still, it seems to me the 84 team one year older... was still likely better than the team they beat the year prior.

Agreed except is Houston 83 in question which had Drexler and Micheaux on addition to Olajuwon and Young.
Houston 83 was way better than Houston 84.

That's a tough final two. Georgetown never wins user polls but, in this case, it's really close. Yeah I was shocked we took down Duke in the first round. And houston-illinois in the final is not what i would expect form a popularity contest. This may say something about SI though. The results might have been different if the poll had been on ESPN (the initial bracket probably would have been all ACC teams anyway.)

The problem with having the 85 team is that most people equate that unit as having won the national championship since the same guys won the 84 finals. What this poll ends up being is the best team to have never won an NCAA championship. It also baffles me how the 2005 Illini team is in this but the 1989 Flying Illini team which was a much better team can't even qualify for this.

Strange seedings. The only defensible answers are Hoyas 85, UNLV 91 and Duke 99.

Another myopic poll--just one team in the pre-ESPN era?
Arguments can (and should) be made for:
Kansas 1957 (lost final to UNC in 3OT) Marquette 1974 (lost final to NC State) Maryland 1975 1974 (#4 nationally, six NBA draft picks, not invited to the NCAAs) Rutgers 1976 (undefeated heading into Final Four)

One could also make the case for Indiana 75

Out of curiosity, how many of those teams would beat Georgetown's 85 squad best 3 out of 5 in the estimation of posters old enough to remember? UNLV 91 is a really good call too.

But why would you put a team that was undefeated like Rutgers or 2008 Memphis in when you could include the 2014 Florida Gators?
