Too bad it's the worst idea ever.

I agree that this is not the best of ideas. Setting aside concerns regarding security, there are the more practical issues such as the lack of athletic infrastructure, Los Angeles-style-all-day-all-night-long gridlock on the roads, horrific swamp-like summer weather, and longer wait times at eateries I frequent.
Will this be a DC-Baltimore kind of a thing? If so, then I welcome it.

Lots of reasonably well-argued back and forth on the topic available on GGW: greatergreaterwashington.org/post/24125/topic-of-the-week-olympics-in-dc/My own thoughts are something like this: the Olympics (particularly the summer Olympics; winter is much easier) could 'best' be done by a nation/city with strong, transparent, responsive governance (e.g. London). However, for any number of reasons, it is less and less likely that those types of places will be interested in hosting. Instead, it will fall to more autocratic places that can ram through bids and projects, irrespective of public sentiment. My fear is that DC is the sort of place that is just dysfunctional and oligarchic enough to get in a winning bid, while being not decisive and streamlined (or autocratic) enough to actually pull the thing off without it becoming a fiasco.

LA had absolutely no gridlock resulting from the 1984 summer games, so I wouldn't give up hope that the traffic issue is somehow manageable. As for the rest of the issues, well...

The USOC picks Boston for its 2024 bid.

Looking forward to see how this works out. Think driving in Boston is tough now? Just wait.

Looking forward to see how this works out. Think driving in Boston is tough now? Just wait. Boston was arguably the weakest of the four proposals (imagine tourists flooding Logan Airport, for one example) and there is no stadium to host the major events. Building a 60,000 temporary stadium in Southie won't be a walk in the park and like most projects in Boston, will be well over budget. Debt service on the Big Dig is $550 million every year for a project that was originally estimated at $2B and came in at $24B. But maybe that's the point. The US isn't likely to win anyway. The USOC has no support on the IOC, where graft and anti-Americanism is a well honed tradition. Boston isn't going to last long in the voting against Paris, Rome, Brisbane, or the presumptive choice, South Africa. Maybe the USOC should simply take a pass on 2028 and double-down on the 100th anniversary of the '32 Olympics in Los Angeles. By then, President George P. Bush will give it our full national support.

Have to agree with DFW here. Picking Boston looks like a punt. The USOC might as well have chosen Duluth (no offense, Duluth).
