I received a postcard and an email bearing the university seal and requesting that I "update my personal information" with one of the University's "trusted" corporate associates.
This corporation wrote down my personal information, which I provided for free, then offered to sell me a copy of the directory that they will create using that free information for two payments of $69.00. This overpriced ($138.00 before tax!) print directory will be useless to anyone with an Internet connection and the knowledge that an searchable online alumni directory exists.
I'm sure the University made money from this deal, and good for them. However, I do wonder to what lengths the University is willing to go in order to make money off its graduates. I am sharing this information in case there's anyone else out there who isn't very interested in helping out corporate middlemen looking to make a lazy profit.

I got the postcard and promptly tossed it. It comes across as completely shady.
(Confession: I work for GU and did get calls from more than one alum concerned about it.)

That is what I thought. I got the card and I got a couple of emails about that. I figured that the information update was a chance for them to hard sell me to buy the directory. I can get all the info on alumni through the alumni part of the website. Thanks for confirming.

It's not all bad, this service probably also helps the University update its directory for free. I know it's like pulling teeth to get alumni to update their info on the website, so having a postcard reminder and phone number is helpful to some. Agree on the cost of the directory though...who needs more paper anyway? And at that cost? SMH
The funny thing is, my wife got the same postcard as I did, except it was for her alma mater. Only things that were different were the university name and logo.
