I add my condolences. As a person of Polish extraction, I enjoyed having a Polish pope. Of course, I am also of Italian extraction, so all the Popes in my lifetime (five and counting) have either been Polish or Italian. The world has lost a giant and saint and a sportsman.

Did the Pope ever visit Georgetown? If so, it might be interesting to see if we can find some old pictures.
God rest his soul...

God bless John Paul II.
An earlier pope, Pope Pius XII, received an honorary degree from Georgetown and was listed in the alumni directory under Eugenio Pacelli.

I have to admit that him being Polish was very enjoyable for me as well. My mom is Polish (came to the US when she was 19) and I travel to Poland pretty much every summer to spend time with family and friends in Warsaw, its a second home for me.

I turned 30 in November and have no recollection of a papal election. His longevity merely coincides with his brilliance and devotion to Christ.

RIP, John Paul II.
Great man, great spirit and leader. He's in a better place and I hope his successor is as outgoing.

R.I.P. Pope John Paul II. I have only been alive to have one pope in my life and he was the one. It is going to be different without you and alot will be missed with you gone, but you are now in a better place.

The funeral is expected to be held some time between Wednesday and Friday, with a decision to be made tonight (U.S. time). There has been no word of specific arrangements at GU, although a mass e-mail yesterday from DeGioia indicated that there would be masses of rememberance and the like. There are rumors floating around that GU may cancel classes at some point out of respect to the Pope and so that the campus community can participate fully and appropriately in the mourning and rememberances.

Perhaps Rome still isn't comfortable with the independent Jesuits and their pursuit of academic and intellectual honesty. Catholic is also the only University in the U.S. that has a papal charter. Since a former pope was the one that chartered it, I feel that the Pope would always make sure to visit it. Plus, isn't that where the basilica is in DC?

Perhaps Rome still isn't comfortable with the independent Jesuits and their pursuit of academic and intellectual honesty. John Paul II visited St. Louis University on one of his last visits and the choice of CUA over Georgetown was likely as much local (given the up and down relationships between the Archdiocese and the University) as logistical. There's another topic here which is probably Blue & Gray Board material, but it has to do with how the Vatican views the Jesuit order. For centuries it was said that Jesuits took a direct vow of obedience to the Pope (which was referring to the final vows taken if called to missionary duty). Various academics have suggested that the order's political and social activities have grown distant from the Vatican and to this vow. That's for academic debate, of course, but there are political issues within the Church that are always in play. That's not to say that the Jesuits are completely on the "outs" with Rome. John Paul named more Jesuits to the rank of Cardinal (13) than any predecessor. Three of them (those below the age of 80) are eligible to vote in the conclave. www.holycross.edu/departments/history/vlapomar/cardinals.htm

"Perhaps Rome still isn't comfortable with the independent Jesuits and their pursuit of academic and intellectual honesty."
Or, maybe there's another issue: "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build My church"; and, "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven"; and, "whatever sins you forgive are forgiven and whatever sins you retain are retained".

The mass mailer may have gone out yesterday, but it wasn't sent directly by Jack DeGioia, as he and his wife were out in Las Vegas until two hours ago. I was just talking to his in-laws and they said they were out here for a week. I am sure he was in contact with people at GU at this time though.

Much sadness today in Chicago, which is the second largest Polish city in the World. I heard the Pope described as the Old Lion. It's a perfect nickname for him. Requiem aeternam dona ei Domine et lux perpetua luceat ei.

Today at St. Anastasia's in LA I attended the noon service and the one administering the mass, Msngnr. Cox, had conducted Mass with the Holy Father in the 1990s. It was a very revealing Homily about the most consequential Pope of our times.
"John Paul named more Jesuits to the rank of Cardinal (13) than any predecessor. Three of them (those below the age of 80) are eligible to vote in the conclave."
I was about to ask how many Jesuits are participating in the Conclave. May Loyola and the Holy Spirit look over the Cardinals as they assemble for this most serious of tasks.
