The thing about basketball is that it only takes one great player and a good supporting cast to turn a program around. I remember what Bill Bradley did for Princeton, Larry Bird for Indiana Stare, and of course Patrick for us. You can argue that Otto did the same last year and had he stayed would have made us a top 10 team this year. But that's the rub. With kids leaving early it puts that much more pressure on recruiting. In the past you got your stud and rode him for 4 years. If enough teams in your conference did the same you had a good conference. I'm afraid the new BE will have a bigger problem reloading since its academic standards discourage the one or two and dones. When the dust settles, it's always the big state schools that walk away with the championship. And the conferences with these schools will always be dominant. I agree that the new BE will be fun to watch and will put some teams in the top ten every year. But as we found out yesterday (and Creighton found out last weekend) we just won't be in the same league as the SEC, Big 10, and yes the ACC.

What's so great about the ACC, considering out RPI > theirs this year..

By dominant I don't mean old BE dominant where you get 3 teams in the finals or even dominant like a few years ago when we had 6 teams in the tourney. I mean dominant when it comes to winning national championships. The talent level on those premier SEC, ACC, Big 10 teams will always be significantly higher than the talent level on future BE teams UNLESS we get one or two diamonds in the rough who stay around (or don't get academically suspended) 3-4 years. For several reasons I watched a lot more college ball this year than usual. You couldn't switch from a top BE game to a top ACC or SEC game and not notice the drop off in talent. Creighton, Nova, Providence were good but Florida, Carolina, Kansas (with Embid) and Duke would have easily beaten them. Couldn't you see the Florida State blowout coming? BTW, Leonard Hamilton should be fired for wasting all that talent. Florida State, with JT3 or Cooley as coach would have gone though the BE this year like a hot knife through butter.

Coach Hamilton is on the hot seat...1 more year without a NCAA Tourney bid and FSU will replace him.

When the Big East started, it was a collection of schools with long basketball histories, but very limited successes. It was nothing but a stepchild to the ACC, the Pac 8, even the SEC and Big 8. But it grew its brand, with the help of a strong, insightful President and the good fortune of having a collection of Hall of Fame coaches, many of whom were still in the relative beginnings of their careers. They were able to generate excitement and to recruit top-level talent, with the help of a fledgling television network that would grow to become a dominant force.
Let's take a breath or two and give the reconstituted Big East a couple of minutes before we proclaim it doomed to mid-majordom. True, it may not be able to escape that fate given the current landscape of college athletics and the football domination; the established Worldwide Leader in sports television; and the inclusion of a number of programs that are struggling to improve their recent fortunes and develop consistent success. But there is still a place for star recruits who want to play for a school where basketball is the prevalent sport, in a conference that has a name that still has value and history, on a national, growing network that promotes the conference and its teams as the jewel of its coverage rather than just one of a stable of conferences and teams.

Whether this league becomes great is certainly in the balance. Still, it is certainly easier for teams to recruit based on certainty that all their games will be televised and that they are part of a league where basketball is king. It was interesting the FSU has players who are playing both basketball and football. Hate to think what those players risk of concussion related injuries worsening is compared to single sport athletes. Football's response to head injury has not been adequate and their liability for this has not yet been realized. Not sure that a toned down sport without the horrible risks of head injury that currently damage football players will be nearly as popular. However without preventing brain injury, the football leagues will be liable for all the medical injuries they are causing and that liability will likely be far greater for an educational institution that only pay's the student with an education their damaged brains cannot retain. If this occurs a basketball only league could be king. Then the question will be whether the new Big East on Fox is better than a much lower paid and less televised Atlantic 10 on ESPN.

I'd like to know how 3 teams in the finals works. And a few years ago the BE put 11 teams (out of 16) in the tourney, not 6. The Big East had a down year. But we've also got some programs (re)establishing themselves on a national level. With some very good recruiting classes coming in. And if you think the academic standards of all these schools are so high that it's discouraging one- or two-and dones (i.e. top level talent), then you don't follow recruiting closely enough and you're under a gross misconception that the other 9 schools hold the same level of academic standards that we do. And by what measure is the SEC a conference to aspire to in terms of basketball? It's two very good programs standing on top of a steaming pile of trash. We already put more teams in the tourney this year than the SEC. And you mean to tell me you expected FSU to shoot the lights out, to the tune of 68% from the field, 69% from 3, and 79% from the FT line? If so, you need to start gambling. Our d was poor, but poor d is not the sole cause of those types of shooting numbers. So count me among those that did not see that type of blowout coming.

Interesting, optimistic article. More and more people are finding out where Fox Sports 1 is, so it'll be a slow, steady growth. I wonder if a Pac 12-Big East challenge would be in the best interests of the network... Also, MLB is on FS1, which further legitimizes the network and will bring in some more eyeballs, especially when the postseason begins (I believe there are supposed to be a couple MLB playoff games on FS1 this year).

FS1 has many obstacles to overcome and the quality of the broadcasts this year was very uneven, but everything takes time. The combination of the PAC 12 and the Big East gives FS1 some real hope for the future. Is there any reason games cannot start at 7:30 or 8:00? For those of us on the West Coast, a 7:00 game means we are not home until the second half. What they should do going forward is doubleheaders with the Big East playing early. What about FS1 sponsored preseason tournaments with some of its conferences involved--PAC 12, BE and Big12. As to the technical quality of the broadcast, they simply must figure out how to get back from a commercial in time to show the resumption of play and those long lingering shots of a FT shooter that often cause the viewer to miss the actual shot must be eliminated.

Interesting point because the fans on the east coast were complaining about the 9:15pm tip-offs on Monday nights which were hurting attendance and TV viewing. These games now go well over 2 hours, so a Nova - Gtown league game could easily last a few minutes short of midnight on a weekday.
They need to figure it out, BE early followed by Pac 12 late makes sense. Or, if you must play at 915, make sure the game is at Marquette, Depaul or Creighton in the central time zone. I personally hated all the 915pm tips for Georgetown this season.

we used to get mainly 7PM tips on Big Monday, put the FOX sports folks are the new kid on the block and are still figuring out programming content. Also we should get some 8PM Saturday slots, it's good for the fans, it's not what the networks want. BE schools mainly are not the principal tenant in their arena, so we suffer on scheduling. I don't think MSG will give the Johnnie a Sat night slot.

They also need to archive the games like (horrors) ESPN. I think I got to see only two or three Hoya games this year.

If only Nova and Kansas played each other this year, so we wouldn't have to rely on the good doctor's prognostic abilities... hm
