Even though we (McBricks, SFO and I) are all questioning the sanity of traveling from Northern California to ice cold Indianapolis to watch a team that may or may not show up, we are still going. The tickets are non-refundable and we can drink our way through Indiana, I guess.
Two relevant questions:
1. Who else is going? We are going to try to go to the Wiz-Pacers Friday as well. IM me if you want to meet up before either/both games.
2. What is there to do in Indy? We are doing some Hoosiers related stuff, and drinking, but otherwise it's been a little rough on the planning. Anyone from Indy?

In, only because the drinking will numb the pain.

If any locals can provide help with #2, that would also be greatly appreciated.

I'll make it to a Butler game one year, but not for this game up against the NFL playoffs. N.B. the Colts-Patriots game is at 8:15 PM ET Saturday (in Foxborough, granted), so establishments will likely be particularly crowded.
My trips to Indy have been to Colts games downtown, which is fairly compact and has the requisite number of eating, drinking, and sport-watching establishments. No specific recommendations, and no specific knowledge about things closer to Hinkle.

It has been many moons since I lived in Indy, so hopefully some real locals will come on and give you some good info, but a few items:
- Not far north of Hinkle is Broad Ripple, which is a nice strip of bars if you want to escape the fairly sterile downtown vibe. Nothing incredibly mind blowing, but you could bar hop your way along Broad Ripple Ave for a while and have a decent time.
- The Slippery Noodle Inn is one of the more famous places downtown, it wasn't my cup of tea since it is more of a live music place, Blues mainly IIRC, but it is apparently the oldest continuously operating bar in the state of Indiana, so it's got that going for it.
- I used to spend far too much time at the Rathskeller which is a great German bar. I recall the beers being very large and very strong, so hopefully that is still the case.
- Food wise, a quick Yelp search shows that Cafe Patachou is still a big breakfast place, along with Le Peep, which is a bit more of a chain, but still reliable. Sadly, I had a very low paying job when I was there, so I don't know any nice dinner spots, but St Elmo's is the famous steakhouse that seems to draw a crowd.
Sorry I can' think of any real to-do's; gotta admit Indy is probably a bit better in the summer, in the winter I used to go to Chicago a lot! Probably is worth heading out to Speedway to see the racetrack, it really is quite something when you see how big it is, and visualize 200,000 odd people in there. I did visit the Hall of Fame museum once, that might be worth a visit.
Hope you have a great time, used to live about a mile south of Hinkle in the early 00's, when Butler was starting to get good on a regular basis.

HoyaChris and I will be at the Wizards/Pacers and Hoyas/Butler games, along with another fellow Hoya '78. While HoyaChris is too modest to trumpet it himself (well, maybe not but I'll do it for him anyway) this is another link in the Dallas resident's impressive Road Warrior run this year (Korea, Puerto Rico, Kansas already; four home games, the Garden for MSU and the Big East to follow). In terms of "to do's" in Indy, and based only on googling around and with lotsa time to kill Saturday, the Indy Motor Speedway Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions museum, Medal of Honor recipient Memorial and USS Indianapolis Memorial (the ship carrying the atomic bomb elements that Quint talks about in Jaws that was sunk and the survivors attacked by sharks) all look interesting...But doors open at Hinkle 90 minutes in advance, and getting there promptly for plenty of ambience -- and to be sure the rims are indeed ten feet (who knew until Korea that one REALLY does needs to double-check that?) -- will be the main priority... www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/history/35204-Museum/ www.ncaahallofchampions.org/index.phpwww.medalofhonormemorial.com/www.ussindianapolis.org/monument.htm

Dan -- our third is not a Mason (who said he was coming, but then said he was not ) but he is the second-highest ranking Hoya in the Leonsis organization (behind only Ted his ownself) and the benefactor providing our tickets Friday night (where the phrase "good seats, eh buddy?" is expected to be uttered quite a few times).

Actually this weekend will be the first of five consecutive weekends in which I will be traveling to see the Hoyas. At this point I am not sure that this is a good thing given that Korea=loss, Puerto Rico = Northeastern loss and Kansas = loss. Plus, after last night I am not feeling very optistic about Butler, Creighton or MSU.

Sweet, look forward to meeting everyone. Where's everyone drinking pre-games (Pacers / Hoyas)?
