Fellow HoyaTalkers,
Thanks for all of your interest in the Prediction Thread over the years. It's been fun coming up with subtle ways of insulting the opposition while remaining quasi-relevant to the actual game being played, running the numbers after games, and trying to count the number of times lichoya predicted "3 points or OT"(I think he wore out my google spreadsheet). For those newer members, it's a tradition started years ago by BuffaloHoya, a legendary poster and, incidentally, my former chem lab parter (we're both now lawyers, of course), and I took up the mantle a few years ago when he went into semi-retirement from the board.
Well, the time has come for me to pass the baton too, so I thought that, rather than pull an Irish goodbye and leave the always well-meaning HoyainSpirit wondering where the heck I'd gone again, I'd offer up the scepter of power of being Prediction Thread starter and tallier to another poster.
Any takers? Have at it! PM me if you want access to the spreadsheet and formulae I used; it's a lot easier than pen and paper, I found out.
Hoya Saxa, and here's to a solid inaugural season in the New/Old/New/Old Big East!
Cheers,
C2C

Dear HoyaTalkers: It’s November and as “baton holder” of the Prediction Thread/Contest/Oracle Award for the last decade, I want to thank all of you who have participated throughout the toughest decade of Hoya Basketball in modern times. Although the stats on the court speak for themselves, the Prediction thread reminds us that there are other ways to win in difficult times. Now that the season is upon us, I remembered the post below from when C2C passed the “baton” and I grabbed the “scepter of power of being the Prediction Thread starter and tallier.” I think C2C also had it for a decade. As with C2C, the time has come for me to pass the baton too and leave on top as the current Hoya Oracle. Here are the rules, as amended: RULES:
1. The WINNNER of each Prediction Thread is the poster who correctly predicts the outcome of the game (team win or loss).
2. TIE-BREAKERS are determined by which posters' predictions are: (a) Closest to actual margin of victory or defeat (by points off) (b) Closest to Hoyas' actual score (c) Closest to Opponents' actual score (d) Closest to total score (e) Cleverness. 3. No predictions after game starts. 4. Scores can be changed up to gametime. Any changes after that point will not be considered. 5. If two posters have the same prediction, the earliest submitted prediction is the one that counts and the other poster’s prediction will be eliminated.
For our new posters, here's an example of 2(a): Opponent won with a final score of 91-89. Everyone who picked GU to win is eliminated. Two posters predicted Opponent’s win, with Poster A predicting 78-66 and Poster B predicting 72-70.
Poster A: (91-78) + (89-66) = 13 + 23 = 36 off the actual final score Poster B: (91-72) + (89-70) = 19 + 19 = 38 off the actual final score
Thus, Poster A won by 2 points.Any takers? I did not use C2C’s spreadsheet because it took me more time than using pen and paper. May Year 2 of the rebuilding of the rebuilding finally be a rebuilding!!! Hoya Saxa!! prhoya Winner, Hoya Oracle Award 2024. Fellow HoyaTalkers, Thanks for all of your interest in the Prediction Thread over the years.
