Don't count out Barclay's Center jumping into the mix for the ACC action. Money is money.

I find it amusing that adding teams in Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Indiana somehow makes New York City a "prominent part" of the ACC's geographical footprint

Suggests there's an out clause with the Big East that may allow ACC in there before the 10-year period is over... SI.com: Is it important for the ACC tournament to be held in Madison Square Garden? Brey: We have to get to the Garden. In my first league meetings at the ACC, people said to me, "You guys overwhelmed what we were doing in Greensboro." I just think it's so sexy to play in that building. We've got two years in Greensboro right now, and that's all that's spoken for. The Garden is committed to the Big East for 10 but from what I understand, there may be some outs in there. Of course Brey wants to be at MSG. Why would you want to go from competing there to Greensboro? (And he's wrong, the ACC is going to be at the Verizon Center in 2016, so 2017 is the first unspoken for year).
Based on all reports, the Big East has a long-term agreement with MSG. I have no idea what these "outs" are or what Brey would know about them (probably little), but the only thing I could think of would be if revenue/ticket sales do not meet expectations. It will be important for the New Big East schools to fill MSG this year, because that is really the only reason we could eventually lose MSG as a venue.
Otherwise, I think this is mostly posturing because Brey and the former Big East schools would prefer to be in New York than North Carolina. One thing is certain: as long as the historic southern schools retain their pull, the ACC will never agree to have the tournament at Madison Square Garden every year. If you are MSG, why would you throw away an annual tournament so that you can host the ACC every so often? It really doesn't make sense.

Brey needs something other than South Bend to sell recruits.
You can tell the article is crud though when you get to this part:
"Syracuse has looked good in getting off to a 3-0 start..." - yeah, like when they beat St. Francis Brooklyn by 6 at home shooting 36%...

Without connections to DC or NYC, Notre Dame is done and he knows it. Speaking of which, what the hell has happened to West Virginia?

MSG can get out of the contract if they want. Just has to pay enough money and the BE would agree to it. But this is probably doubtful with the uncertainty that MSG is facing in the next decade (unless that has been sorted).
Also the ACC wont be there before 2017 as they are booked through 2016 at other sites (DC should be an interesting experiment). By 2017 things could be very different for both leagues. And I wouldnt be surprised if the City of Greensboro looks to pass some sort of tax initiative or something similar to keep the tournament in that city.

Its clear that a significant contingent in the ACC wants to play at the Garden. I still don't think they are ready to play in New York for ten years straight and doubt they ever will. Still doesn't lessen my fears that the New Big East will have a hard time even approaching attendance and demand for tickets, that we have seen increase dramatically over the last ten to fifteen years.
I just don't want to be in a position where the Garden is giving the ACC the building every three or four years.

I can see why Mike Brey wants to get back to the Garden given all of his postseason success in that building.

Brey may not win the BE coach of the year award any more, but I understand that the award is being renamed the Mike Brey award, so that's something, anyway.

It will be important for the New Big East schools to fill MSG this year, because that is really the only reason we could eventually lose MSG as a venue. Definitely true. This article claims that 70% of the tickets for the tournament have already been sold, which seems like a good start (unless that is the normal percentage set aside for each school): www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2013/11/11/Colleges/Fox-Big-East.aspx"Fox Sports has recently inked a two-year deal with the Big East conference to sell and market all corporate sponsorship throughout the Big East. This deal was made only days before the Big East kicked off the beginning of a 12-year, $600 million deal with Fox Sports as their primary televising network. The Big East now joins the ranks of the SEC and very few other conferences to make such a lucrative deal....Fox Sports has hit the ground running with a hardy advertising scheme that has led to regular season tickets being mostly sold out, and an astounding 70% of tickets to the Big East tournament, which is in March, have been sold already."
