Let's not let our leadership escape with the easy action of replacing Coach Kelly. Who would want to replace him to face a significant disadvantage before they lead the first practice? If they did happen to be successful, why would they stay? To be underpaid and under resourced? I am not blindly advocating that GU offer scholarships. I am advocating that leadership step up and align the level of investment with the level of competition. If we want to have an FCS team, let's make the investment necessary to have one worthy of the University. If we decide that we are unwilling to make that investment, then let's go D II, play quality football and provide a great experience for the Georgetown students who also choose to be athletes. What we shouldn't do is remain "stuck in the middle" , lacking the guts to define a direction and causing frustration for coaches, alumni, fans and, especially, the kids who bust their asses to compete as students and players. I think our options are FCS or no football team. Pretty sure NCAA rules prevent schools with D1 teams from having sports in lower divisions, with the only exception being football in FCS.

Good point, TBird. However, within FCS, there are varying degrees of investment. It's pretty clear that we are not willing to make the investment that other Patriot League schools now are, which is funding scholarships. That means that we need to find a new conference home. The NEC and Pioneer League have been mentioned. I don't think being an independent would work for Georgetown, and I think any chance of joining the Ivy League in an official or unofficial capacity in football is a pipe dream. I think the only other options are going "club," which is what I believe George Mason does, or dropping the program entirely, which I don't think anyone here on Hoya Talk or in the athletics department really wants to talk about.

The only short term fix is to get a young, motivated head coach to lead the program. It is still a D1 football program. You'd have young college assistants knocking down your door to lead this program.

Good perspective from TBird on whether we even have the option of going DII. Would appreciate anyone who can clarify that issue.
In regards to a new Coach, sure, someone always will aspire to a HC job but, if they were successful, why would they stay? I believe Kelly is a competent coach with high integrity, is it really worth replacing him when we have no sustainable direction for success?
Looking forward to The Third Rail doing a deep dive here. We are in a pickle.

Cant go D2 and stay D1 in anything else. Unless there's been a recent rule change.

Good perspective from TBird on whether we even have the option of going DII. Would appreciate anyone who can clarify that issue. Since the so-called "Dayton Rule" in 1992, schools must play all their sports in the same division--this is what led Georgetown to the MAAC in 1993. A small handful of schools playing a single nonrevenue sport above their division (e.g. Hopkins lacrosse) were later grandfathered in.

We are in a pickle. He's not a competent coach. Look at his career record. Especially his career record without Patenaude. Also, do people realize what schools play DII? There are ZERO academic peers in that Division. Like not even the same universe.
