Trayvon Martin & George Zimmerman, I was wondering if posters on the board felt justice was served or injustice was served?

That question can only be answered with another question. If you mean cosmic justice, likely not as there is a family without their child, needlessly.
However, if you mean strict legal justice, then absolutely yes as a trial was held according to Florida law and a verdict rendered.
Warts and all, this nation still has the best system of justice going.
Net,net. Nobody won and a family lost.

Warts and all, this nation still has the best system of justice going. I've seen that comment a lot in various places, but I'm confused by the certainty of the statement. We're obviously better than a number of nations, but what makes us better than other first world countries like Denmark, Germany, or New Zealand (just to name a few)?

I would disagree strongly this country has the best justice system in the world. I think for a first world nation it's pretty poor.

With protests and marches planned, the country is seeing the verdict differently in various circles. Conservative radio and Fox News do not seem too happy about the upcoming marches.

I'm not going to get into a discussion about this so this will be the only time I respond in this thread. However, the only thing this verdict proves is that if you are a young, black male, you will always be seen as a threat and in the eyes of the justice system, your life is meaningless. I could've said the same thing after the murder of Emmitt Till and it would fit the same.

This is a thread I want to participate in. Uh-huh. Yessirree!

When the controversy started the demand was for charges and a trial. I never heard the demand for a conviction.

Just curious. Did the system fail or did six jurors fail? Or did the prosecution fail? All of the above to some extent? Can we all agree that Florida, the state that brought us hifigator, is a terrible place and a stain against the great American experiment?

George Zimmerman was tried by a six-person jury under Florida law and was acquitted. Justice was administered properly. In fact I applaud the jurists who rendered this decision amid enormous outside pressure to convict. This was one trial, decided by one jury and it says nothing beyond that about justice for minorities or justice in the entire state of Florida or the U. S. The President's initial reaction was that he accepts the decision. Unfortunately, he is the one that initially painted it as a matter of race with his comment that, had he a son, he would look just like Travon. There was nothing presented in the trial that tied Zimmerman's actions to race. In fact, according to reports, the FBI concluded there was no racial motive.
It would be nice if all the people who are sounding off against the verdict would spend half their time trying to calm those who are committing acts of vandalism and worse. I vehemently disagree with the Supreme Court's decisions re abortion but I'm not out breaking store windows or boycotting Washington.

Do you have an idea of why George Zimmerman decided to call 911 on Trayvon Martin (thinking that Trayvon might be a robber)?? Was he walking too slowly? Was he walking too fast? Cause he had never seen Trayvon Martin before? Is it because of what Trayvon Martin was wearing? Or none of the above and something else?

We're obviously better than a number of nations, but what makes us better than other first world countries like Denmark, Germany, or New Zealand (just to name a few)? I'd like to second this motion in a broader sense; can we as a nation just stop proclaiming ourselves the best in the world at everything? How much would you like a neighbor who kept proclaiming himself the best guy on the street all the time? Other people in perfectly good countries hear this crap and their opinion about how great we are is justifiably moved...in the wrong direction. Even if it were true in one particular sense that we were the best in the world at X, this is something to be demonstrated rather than proclaimed. And more to the point, how often is it said by someone who actually has any perspective or evidence justifying the statement? Generally speaking it is said by someone who has never been to even a small fraction of the other great countries of the world in my experience because very few are lucky enough to spend any time in more than a handful of countries. I THINK the US probably is the best country in the world in a lot of ways- but it is a point that is actually undermined by actually stating it aloud as it were an argument in and of itself. Methinks the greatest country in the world wouldn't have to keep telling everyone that.

I believe that there is a lot of truth in this statement.
