That's the first reference I've heard to Smith asking for a waiver to play at the beginning of the season. My guess is that they would have applied for both that waiver, and also eligible for 2014-2015. If Smith hadn't played those 6 games, he would have been immediately eligible this year, and had next season eligible, too. "If Smith doesn't get the waiver, he'll be eligible in mid-December." He left in the first half of his Junior year. I read this as him definitely being eligible for the 14-15 season, and then only unknown being if he'll get the first half of this upcoming season. There was a ton of debate about this in another thread. I, along with others, agreed with that analysis, but apparently eligibility is based on academic year, and Smith has used three years (freshman, sophomore, junior), so under that logic he only has one year left. Smith should get some sort of waiver, otherwise it will be very unfair. If he cannot play in the first semester and he cannot play in 2014-2015, he'll basically have 1 semester at Georgetown versus the 4 he would have had if he sat out those 6 UCLA games last year. That's really ridiculous. Totally unrelated - one thing I've wondered is whether Georgetown playing UCLA last year helped spark any interest Smith had in Georgetown. I am sure he would have transferred regardless, but the exposure to Georgetown in the Legends Classic couldn't have hurt in putting us on his radar.

We recruited Josh out of HS. I don't think he ever took a visit, but it wasn't totally out of left field that we were interested once he decided to transfer.
If he doesn't get any waiver, he might sit out all of this season in order to play a full season in 2014-15. That team is likely to be better and it would give him more of a chance to get in shape and hopefully have a big year and get drafted. Just another possible outcome.

I have no insider information, but I think it's highly unlikely that Smith would sit out until 2014-2015. He would be out of organized basketball for almost 2 years at that point. While I agree Josh's chances at the NBA are probably a lot better if he can play in college in 2014-2015 (and I'd love to have him with the other talent we are bringing in), Josh said that he came to Georgetown to get playing time, and I think that means as soon as possible.

"A committed Josh Smith, I'm not sure there is a better big man in the country," Thompson said. "He has the instincts and the physical tools to be better than any big man I've had."
Big words from JT3!

Positive quotes from Smith reflecting a willingness to accept responsibility for his conditioning. Also good news in terms of his weight loss. Hopefully he can drop to the 280-290 range by the end of the year. JT III's approach is spot on with a goal of keeping Smith on the floor for limited minutes at a stretch and building from there.
As for eligibility, it seems that the waiver request is in and it is just a matter of waiting for an answer from the NCAA. The transfer rules remain a joke, like many other aspects of the NCAA rules. Consider that the so-called One-Time Transfer Exception allows players in sports other than basketball and football (and I believe hockey) to transfer to another 4 year Division I program one time with immediate eligibility, assuming a sign-off from the former coach. Hopefully he can play at least 3 semesters, but if not, this move may still have very positive implications for the kid far beyond the basketball court.

From JT3's quotes, it seems like Josh Smith is working harder than at UCLA, but still not as hard as his teammates, such as our workhorse, Jabril. JT3 seems to be hoping that Josh gets up to that level soon.
I like how Josh is taking responsibility and especially like the fact that he's been working with a dietitian. I don't know if he's really anywhere close to 290, but we can hope.

Having seen Josh up close this summer at the Kenner league games - he has lost some weight since UCLA, and even seems to have lost a few pounds over the course of the summer. But I would be pretty surprised if he only weighs 310, unless he has lost about 15-20 pounds since saturday afternoon. But it is pretty hard to judge someone's weight just by looking at them, so this is barely informed conjecture on my part.

Obviously, the more weight Josh can cut, the better. That said, by all accounts, he really seems to be taking strides in the right direction. Also, talking to Roy and realizing the amount of work Roy put into improving has to be a good thing for Josh. Any one on one time with Roy, on or off the court, has to be a huge plus. Big Man U!

I find it amusing that III mentions how he may be the most advanced big he has ever had and then immediately discusses his passing ability. Typical. III is probably already envisioning Josh at the top of kep dropping passes to cutting teammates for backdoor layups.
Josh appears to have postup ability and I'd rather see him get used, when he is on the floor, as a go-to guy on offense (something that Roy and Greg Monroe weren't used as much as they should have been considering their height and fg%). I mean I'm glad Josh is a polished passer and all but I'm far more interested in whether he can impose his will on the block, not if he can kick it out to a teammate for a three-pointer.

Maybe because he has the post game and the passing is why JT3 sees Smith's potential to be the best. I like it. Do both and keep the defense honest. If he can dribble from the FT line to the basket and/or consistently hit a jumper from there, then we haven't seen a player like him under JT3.

I'm with MCI. 6'10 and 3 bills? Park your ace under the hoop and go to town. I don't want him to be Greg. Let Hop do that.
There isn't anyone in the new BE who is going to be handle Smith, so take advantage of that.

I like the parking, especially with our shooters and the defense having to pick their poison. But I also would like the complete JT3 repertoire with Smith doing the "J.Wallace" (hand-off at the top of the arc to a three-point shooter who goes around the big who sets the screen and hands off to shooter) play with Cameron. It would be unstoppable and probably around a 50% shot. How about a big who can have the makeable FT line shot as an option in the PrincetonGeorgetown?
From all the Kenner reports, I get the impression that there was an emphasis on penetration. If so, we're going to see a lot more of that this year vs almost none last year.

Don't get too excited about Kenner play indicating changes in the Hoya offense for the upcoming season. Last summer - Markel attacked the basket just as hard as he did this summer, but the regular season offense was not dramatically different. Summer games just lend themselves much more to basic pick and roll/attack the basket offense than offenses based on spacing, cutting, and passing.

Seemed like Josh and DSR did alot of pick and roll this summer, however, I agree with enj in that I'd rather see Mikael faced up in a more natural role out high dumping down to Josh. Or taking someone off the dribble and either finishing or dumping off for a dunk. To me this is still a top 25 team.

Anyway, that was supposed to be read along with the other part (playing a true post).

I think last years offense was a lot different and that markel did drive more. esp. towards the end.
