III says he will be one of the best bigs in the country next year. TTS. Of course, Ben Howland said that for 3 straight years and is now looking for work. Funny first post. Howland may have had his share of issues at UCLA, but he wasn't Steve Lavin. Players that stayed there regularly improved. Josh was an exception, but he also wasn't in shape.

Per @jonrothstein, Hoyas center Josh Smith weighs 358 pounds, down from 385 when he transferred to Georgetown.

27 lbs? I'll bet he's dropped more than that.

The weight will drop more quickly once practice starts.

For a frame of reference: Davante Gardner is listed at 290, Reggie Johnson at Miami was listed at 292, Dexter Pittman from Texas was listed at 285. Those are 3 rotund big guys who were/are effective at the college. Of course those are listed weights. Josh was listed a 305 at UCLA. Clearly he was more than that.

Anyone know what Sweetney weighed when he was here? He was listed at 260.--Admin

I understand that, because of the weight issues, people bring up Sweetney. While they both struggle with weight, the college version of Sweetney was a guy that was in shape and was an absolute beast. I am sad that he wasn't able to maintain that but I still feel it's an unfair comparison as college players. As of right now, Josh Smith doesn't belong in the same conversation as Sweetney as a college player. That said, I'm glad to hear that Josh is dropping some lbs and hopefully he continues to work and put himself in a better position to realize his full potential. Depending on when Rothstein made that report or got that info, JS could be down 10-15 since then with this friggin heat in the NE. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/college/2003/nit/news/2003/04/01/nit_semis_ap/lg_sweetney_ap.html

I wouldn't trust any reported weights to be honest.
Sweetney being listed at 260 even when he was in shape at Gtown is a complete fabrication. I'm 6'3 257 right now (no not fat before anyone makes the joke haha; think more linebacker size). There is 0% chance a 6'8" Sweetney was my weight when he was in shape at any point other than maybe 8th grade haha.
The bottom line is, as anyone who saw him on the sidelines up close during the season and has also seen him at Kenner can attest, he has definitely lost weight. How much only josh and the staff really know. All the rest is just ridiculous speculation. Hope he continues the downward trend. (For his sake and our teams)

An inch shorter than Josh Smith, Derrick Nix at Michigan State reportedly went from 343 in high school to 270 his last two years at Michigan State. Nix was an excellent player as a junior and senior, but I don't think he was as good as Smith could be if he lost the weight. Interestingly, when Nix and Smith went head-to-head in the 2011 NCAA tournament, Smith had 14 points in 25 minutes, and Nix had 2 points in five minutes. Smith looked like the much better player then. However, their careers have gone in opposite directions after that. If Smith really is at 358 now, that seems pretty worrisome. I hope Smith can keep losing weight. Having followed Nix's career pretty closely, my recollection is that he lost most of his weight in the off season NOT during the season.

That is truly amazing - the pictures make clear that, if the work is done effectively, a guy can turn himself into a totally different man/player. I hope and pray that Josh is able to do a good portion of what Mo did.

Is there any sense as to when the NCAA may rule on Josh's remaining eligibility? In this case, the NCAA would really be doing Josh a disservice by not allowing him that extra year. No way he makes the league after just playing half a season. And I can't see him blossoming in Europe or the NBDL.

That's funny. I do agree though I wish we would just know one way or the other. The waiting game sucks.

I would assume not for a while. First they have to make sure all the football player eligibility issues get sorted out, then presumably they'll deal with all the basketball eligibility issues for first semester and only then would they rule on someone like josh.
