Disappointed to hear this. Hope and believe that "Hoops" will land on his feet doing bigger and better things.

Perfect time for the new Fox Sports channel to pick up Weiss for the 24 hour sports channel and related media outlets -- traditional and digital. Make it non-exclusive for print and let him get picked up, at a more affordable price, by USA Today or someone. College basketball is very popular and Weiss has a wealth of knowledge and contacts. I suspect he'll be fine.

I'm sure he took a generous buyout. Better to leave the building with a check than leave without one.
There aren't many true print sportswriters left--ESPN, the Internet, and the rapidly declining state of newspapers makes it a job with a limited career potential. How many of the great writers of the last 25 years still work for papers? Not many. Even the "name" writers don't write anymore, Kornheiser and Wilbon among them. At some point, the rest of the highly paid columnists (Lupica, Telander, Albom) will follow Weiss out the door. And those who, a generation ago, those would have had the means to become stars in the field, now often bow out entirely (Barker Davis).
The TV show "Around The Horn" (an adaptation of the classic "Sportswriters on TV" show from Chicago) began as a collection of newspaper writers. Of the 12 rotating panelists, only three still write for papers today (Woody Paige, Tim Cowlishaw, Israel Gutierrez).

Sad to see this. My dad work for the NY Daily News for 30 years, and he would hate the decline of the print media. Back in his day it was the unions who made it hard on newspapers to exist and essentially killed off about three or four NY dailies. That fact that there were multiple unions per each paper, who each would go on strike, when one of the other unions got a new favorable contract, made maintaining a business difficult. Now it is essentially the internet and cable TV.
