Hi everyone!
I'm really exicted about the resurrection in GU BB, so much so that this year I even bought the ESPN TV package to watch the few games that the Hoyas were on. I also have been following this site pretty regularly. Good work guys.
My question concerns our recruiting of a center. It seems pretty obvious we need an effective one. I was just wondering how much Patrick, ZO and MO help out in this regard. Does anyone know if our former centers contact potential recruits, and whether they still work out with our players during the offseason? I know in the past Patrick used to work out with our players and help teach them the center position a little bit. How much of that still goes on? Seems like it would be a real plus during recruitment.
Any info would be appreciated.

They can work out with guys already with the college team. But in terms of calling etc, i don't think you can do that.

Although, if a big guy comes to campus, and Zo just happens to be working out in the gym, I don't think there's a problem with that!
Our rep as a big man school and the chance to work with all our greats can only help us in recruiting big guys. We've had a bunch of near misses this year, but we'll be fine. Roy just needs to keep working, because I think he can solve a lot of our problems.

That is correct. But there are a lot of ways around that limitation. If the alumni "happen" to be visiting, working out, whatever -- on campus at the time a recruit shows up.... then a casual serendiptious conversation can take place. The pro alumni still visit GU in the summer and workout with the current squad.... and current players can relay that info to the potential recruits. In short, there are a lot of ways that pro-alumni can help without breaking any NCAA rules. Jordan used to show up at UNC for Dean when a particularly crucial recruit was there.... purely coincidence of course!

I guess what I was trying to find out is who exactly shows up, and, on average, just how often does the amlumi work out with the squad. Any info?

As an aside, is there a better school to go to if you're a big man if we can get the program back to assumed NCAA berths and Top 25 status?
You get the big man heritage, in terms of reputation.
You get the big man heritage, in terms of getting to play against them and learn from them.
You get to play in the BE, a big man focused conference that will toughen you up.
You get to play in the Princeton, which develops all the skills, including those perimeter ones all big men want to use these days.
You get to play in the Princeton, where you are the focus of the offense.

Big man heritage is one thing, but most back to the basket centers will have little interest in the Princeton system. These guys just don't have the ball skills and if they did they would be in the NBA. We are moving in the direction of a finesse offense, look at last night's box score. We were outrebounded again but that is our style now. The old time Hoyas are becoming a modern team which is a big reason for our improvement. The college game just does not value big, hulking centers anymore.
