the SportsTalk guys were just talking about McDonough. They were astounded that it only held 2600 and said, "that must be the smallest arena in Division I." Now, I don't know if that is true, but maybe this will encourage the University to get moving on possible McDonough renovations/expansions.
I do realize, however, that the University is doing quite a bit of expansion elsewhere right now so I may be a little bit more patient than others. But it would be nice to let the admin know that when they want to start with a new McD/JT Jr. Convocation Arena that we will be ready to help fundraise!

Definetly not the smallest Division I arena. Coastal Carolina holds a little over 1,000 for one example. I also hope that this will push forward for an on-campus arena. The atmosphere tonight was better then anything you'll get at MCI.

I've been told, from a damn good source, that plans for McDonough are in the pipeline. Its just gonna take time to get the money,zoning,etc... together. The school wants games on campus. THe MCI center thing just didn't work.

THe MCI center thing just didn't work. That would be great, and I have no doubt that the University will eventually do something with it. I just have my doubts that anything will happen in the next 10 years in terms of fundraising.

THe MCI center thing just didn't work. Would they drop MCI completely? I think that'd be a bad idea. Playing in a pro arena is a good recruiting tool, and if we can play as well as we used, we should still have major games (like Cuse, UConn) at MCI. Revenue-wise, that could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Revenue-wise, that could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'd be surprised if, even with a good (5-6K capacity) on-campus arena, the Hoyas didn't continue to play at least 2-3 games a year at MCI. Something tells me the Big East and the TV networks will have something to say about it. But it would be a nice problem to have. As enjoyable as it was to watch an on-campus game on ESPN, and as evident as it was how much of a difference the atmosphere has on the team and the outcome of a game, I think it's still 10 years away from the date the university greenlights a new McDonough Arena. I just hope that clock starts ticking soon.

I think that it would depend on how big this new arena would be to determine if they still use MCI. UConn has their 10k on-campus site and they still use Hartford Civic Center for big games. The big games are the ones which need to be on campus because home-court is especially important against syracuse, uconn etc.

not true about uconn. plenty of big games are played at the civic center - for example, the unc game.
uconn has a great setup with gampel and the civic center. would love to see something like that with the hoyas.
btw, the last block from jeff was sick. coming the top of the key - bs call.

The big games are the ones which need to be on campus because home-court is especially important against syracuse, uconn etc. I know everyone would love the edge that playing in a 7k arena versus Syracuse would give us, but there aer other considerations. We do not have a huge booster base. We do not have a state legislature that wants to give us $1B like Connecticut. So we need to make our cash somewhere. An extra 10,000 people at $10/ticket (conservative) is $100,000. Maybe that's 3-4 times a year, so call it $350,000. And that's before factoring in that the first 7,500 are more expensive in MCI, there are luxury boxes, etc. MCI obviously charges rent that we won't have, so maybe it isn't so extreme, but with an on-campus arena we can negotiate better. Also, MCI is a good recruiting tool. A combination of a Cameron-like OCA and MCI would be great. But dropping MCI shouldn't be assumed.

Can't we negotiate a deal with MCI so that we can play most of our non-conference games at McDonough? I think we should definitely do that since we wouldnt be bound by the Big East minimum seating requirement, and especially against teams that wont draw well at MCI. That place is especially terrible with only 5,000 in attendance.

THe MCI center thing just didn't work. That sounds awesome if true, and I pray that it is. We need this to get done some time in the next 10 years. Duke and the Cameron Crazies would have nothing on us and we would definitely win a few more games each year just because of the home court advantage. The atmosphere last night was the greatest thing I have ever experienced.

Well, 007, looks like it's time for you to start that hunger strike for an on campus arena that you were talking about before the game.

Last night was a terrific college basketball atmosphere. The OAs and the YAs were standing and getting into it; students were fantastic; it was everything a college basketball game should be.
We must make this happen. Anyone with $10m want to come forward for the "Your name here-Thompson Arena", aka "The Crypt"?

I was going to set-up a wire transfer for $10M, and was even willing to forgo my name and just call it the "John Thompson, Jr. Convocation Center," but Hoya Blue vetoed my desire to name the student section "MEGAFANLAND," so I had to cancel my pledge.
Oh yeah, I forgot that I don't have $10M in my bank account either: those thousands of options I had for the now-defunct start-up I worked for didn't pan out.
Oh well, maybe next year...
LET'S GO HOYAS!!! BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA!

But on the plus side, Hoya Blue will be proudly cutting the ribbon on the "AFTER PARTY at Cilantro, $5 cover charge, 18 to enter, 21+ to drink" Student Section, (Coming: Fall Two Thousand and whatever...) Personally, I think it's a little wordy, and doesn't fit on catchy banners, but hey, sponsorship is sponsorship.
