Well, maybe instead of algebra, they can teach them all to speak Mandarin.

When I was in 8th grade in a public school in Cali, algebra wasn't required. Only the advanced students who'd done well enough in whatever they called advanced 7th grade math were able to take it. Most kids took algebra in 9th or 10th grade back then (early 90s).

In other words, if Cali made algebra for 8th graders mandatory at some point in the last 20 years, this sounds like they're just going back to the way they used to do it.
