Well, this hasn't been a very good two weeks for me. I got a ticket on Thursday for using my BlackBerry on the freeway. I was involved in a fender bender last week that was my fault. All my teams lost today. I'm sick, and tomorrow is my birthday (that's always a great combination). And now for the piece de resistance. My all time favorite athlete died today.
I have no idea why I picked Stan Musial as my favorite athlete. He was already well past his prime when I became interested in baseball as a boy. I could certainly have picked Willie Mays, or Hank Aaron, or Mickey Mantle (well, no, I couldn't have picked Mickey Mantle, since I've always hated the Yankees). There was no team in LA then, so there was no local player for me to follow, except from the Pacific Coast League. In retrospect, though, it became pretty clear that I had great instincts. Who ever had a bad word to say about Stan the Man, during his playing days or afterwards? It seems like even the fans in other cities grudgingly respected him, without any animosity. And he was never touched by scandal and didn't seem to have a phony bone in his body.
I still root for the Cardinals to this day, because of Stan the Man.
God bless you, Stan. You were the best.

And Earl Weaver -- love him or hate him, he was darn entertaining. RIP Earl.

I grew up in Nashville listen to KMOX (St. Louis) with Harry Carey broadcasting Cardinals games. Stan the Man was one of my favotites..... Enos Slaughter, and later Ken Boyer (3 base) were great players.

as a 8 year old, I went to little league day at Forbes Field to see my first major league game. Got Stan's autograph on my baseball and saw mad Sam Jones pitch for the Cards. Always followed Stan through out the rest of his career, what a great man he was.
