Look at what Jerrel Benimon is doing in another system.Whose to say that Ryan Kelley's game/3 pt shot would have developed the same way here as it has at Duke or if he even would have gotten any playing time with the Hoyas?

We definitely missed on Kelly, rather than we didn't offer.
We have never had a big guy like Kelly under JT3 (a true 4 who can really shoot), but sure seems to me like a good fit. Kelly would have killed teams with threes from the top of the key and elbow jumpers. He's a good player. Not sure it translates to the pros, but who cares?

That first sentence isn't really true, is it? I mean in the sense that Kelly isn't really any more of a true 4 than Summers or even Bowman. They might have been an inch shorter, but Summers had much more bulk. Bowman may never have shot 40%, but Summers had a nice stroke from outside. Not sure how tall Reggie Cameron will end up being, but I hope he can be that stretch four as well, at least as much as Kelly is.

Kelly would have killed teams with threes from the top of the key and elbow jumpers. He's a good player. Not sure it translates to the pros, but who cares? There was chatter back in 2008 that he wanted to commit but we held off. I actually remember seeing him walking around campus with his Dad and one of our coaches on the day I graduated in May 2008. According to a well-known and respected poster on HoyaReport, Kelly wanted to/tried to commit to Georgetown on or right after that visit, but the staff wasn't sure about him or wasn't sure about the number of scholarships (remember, we still had a commitment from Dashonte Riley at that point and the status of Chris Braswell was still unknown). When Georgetown didn't take him right away he continued to look around, eventually got the Duke offer, weighed both schools and a few others until the end, and eventually popped for Duke (99% sure Georgetown had given him a full/committable offer before he announced). So yes we lost him to Duke, but arguably could have had him if we really wanted him. Tried to slow-play him a bit and lost out. I can't verify this story, but it was the buzz back in 2008. I too hope Cameron can be a stretch 4 for us, but not sure. He's not real big for the position and strikes me as a guy who may struggle to rebound at a high level, but it's certainly possible.

Look at what Jerrel Benimon is doing in another system.Whose to say that Ryan Kelley's game/3 pt shot would have developed the same way here as it has at Duke or if he even would have gotten any playing time with the Hoyas? Benimon's stats in the CAA and on Towson really don't tell us a whole lot. Yes, he's had a great season, but he's playing CAA quality opponents. Let's see - if you take all of Towson's opponents from January, they were ranked on Ken Pom (at the time of each game): 286, 164, 215, 173, 172, 191, 178, 141, 215, 260, 286, 172, 178, 191, 305, 164, 141, 305. In contrast, Georgetown's opponents since January have been ranked: 24, 5, 93, 59, 165, 43, 3, 106, 94, 114, 24, 34, 155, 9, 46, and 114. If Benimon was on Georgetown he would have been playing against MUCH better defenses, more athletic players, and better teams. The fact that Jerelle Benimon is doing well on Towson is great, but let's not pretend like Benimon switched systems and suddenly became a star player. He's a big fish in a small pond - it's not comparable to what he faced at Georgetown, so really, his current stats don't tell us a whole lot.

"System" ... sigh... Jerrelle could thrive in any system. Again, put him in Nate's position and I think he'd thrive. If this makes sense, I think JTIII's coach-to-player was too professional for him. The onus was more on the players. Team ball to such a high degree didn't appear to sit well with Benimon. Seems like he wanted more of a "star turn." --- there's a reason why he got more playing time on the court than H. Sims and others during his freshman and sophomore years. He wasn't exactly a scrub...

He wasn't exactly a scrub... There's a bit of revisionist history here. I am thrilled for Benimonster's success. He's obviously found an environment and "system" in which he is more comfortable. But Benimon was not good here. On a team begging for a big man to grab some p.t., he played about 10 mins per game. He was a turnover machine, with an ORtg of about 80. The best thing he did was hit the O glass. Henry played more than JB during his final yr here, and he never displayed Nate's passing ability. He was so far from a star that I'm not even sure what your "star turn" statement means. Kid could have improved, but his play over two yrs left much to be desired.

Yeah. All credit to JB for developing in the last two years. But he was unwatchable for much of his time here. For comparison, everyone rags on Hop who has a ORtg of 81.5 and TO% of 27.5. JB in his last year here had an ORtg of 82.1 and a somewhat incomprehensible TO% of 38.8 (this is just insane if you think about it). And he's been a significantly worse defender than Hop. This is not a Macklin situation where he was the same player post transfer as he was pre transfer, just with more of an opportunity. This was a guy who was abysmal here, but turned into a very good CAA player. The BE ain't the CAA.

Let me clarify: Benimon wanted to go somewhere where he could be more of a star... I'm not saying he was good here, but JTIII played him some.

I mean Bennie is getting numbers but look at his turnover numbers, they are really really high still.

Lubick is a great passing big man with a decent post move and has played some pretty effective minutes at the 5 for us this year. I don't really see how Benimon would be able to step into Lubick's spot and thrive.

I saw the game...what are u talking about? Assuming he actually made said game winning shot, based on what I know of JTIII, I don't think that's why he was getting 14 minutes a game his freshman year

It really shows how far this team has come (and how much more talented and deep we are today) when we think about the fact that Nikita was 7th on the depth chart that year (in minutes) and he actually started Big East games. Nikita's offense basically was as efficient as Hopkins' this year, except his usage was only 15, versus Hopkins' 24.

That shot gave JTIII confidence to start Nikita for a couple of games over Jessie Sapp. The issue then started to become 1) Nikita did not play good defense 2) Nikita had a shaky outside shot
