"Several members of the GU band, myself included, were honored to accompany him in an off-stage fanfare."
That's awesome. He was a giant.

Few can make quintuple meter work, much less sound amazing. RIP D. Brubeck. A musical and American gem.

From cowboy to jazz giant, Dave Brubek was special to those of us that love jazz. That was an honor, C2C, with your playing with him!

Interesting piece of info about him from wikipedia: He became a Catholic in 1980, shortly after completing the Mass To Hope which had been commissioned by Ed Murray, editor of the national Catholic weekly Our Sunday Visitor. Although he had spiritual interests before that time, he said, "I didn't convert to Catholicism, because I wasn't anything to convert from. I just joined the Catholic Church."

C2C, great story. The man was a giant in the world of jazz and the broader music community as well. I had the extreme good fortune and great honor to work with Dave on several occasions, and to interview him for a music show on PBS. He was the ultimate gentleman. He was filled with great stories of every famous jazz musician of the last 8 decades. He was gracious, generous with his time and spirit, and he maintained his ability to play at a very high level well into his 80's -- at least (last time I saw him).
Dave was highly respected and loved by his fellow musicians in the artist community - regardless of generation. I personally witnessed 80-something Dave, being sought out, warmly greeted and hugged by an early 30's Roy Hargrove. It was a touching moment and confirmed to me that in the jazz world, respect has everything to do with musical talent and chops. Nothing else matters.
Dave will be missed, but his music and influence will live on.
