Yeah he can hit that if he's in rhthym, it's not the best shot but he's earning the right to take it.

And he's got to take a couple if for no other reason than to keep the defenses honest. Hope he hits them reasonably consistently, since they likely will be open shots.

Enough threes for Nate. Short of a shot clock winding down option, there's no reason for him shooting it. No one's closing down on him any tighter for hitting a stray three here and there.
When you shoot with that form and hit in the high 20's % -usually with wide open looks - you shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt. Anymore than two or three for the remainder of the year is more than enough.
But that's a minor grievance. Nate has definitely stepped up his play so far elsewhere on the court, and will be a huge piece of our interior puzzle if we want to have a successful season.

Unlike previous years, this team really does not have a player who is preordained to be "the guy" (Austin Freeman, Greg Monroe etc.). I thought this might be a weakness but after last night I'm not so sure.

Does anynody else believe UCLA was really unprepared, especially in offensive sets, for that game? I think they will play MUCH better as the season progresses as the freshman work on their conditioning, timing, and execution. I think we caught them at prescisely the right time.
Not to take anything away from last night, but I expect tonight will be very different. We'll have to execute on both ends even better to beat Indiana.
I think we have to stuff a zone on Zeller and hope our wings can be quick enough to disrupt perimeter shots and prevent penetration. With Greg and Otto and Jabril, it can be done.
I love the one standard team stat that every broadcast seems to be reciting this year, which is that last year the Hoya defense had the stingiest 3P FG% defense in the country.
Stuff a zone and mak'em chuck it. Since we will be playing 3-4 guys 35+ minutes, the zone might also help with fatigue, especially playing 2 in a row.

He's the one defenses will focus in on and he's the one that teams are going to game plan for. What I think is a huge plus for us is that Whitt is a big time talent and not that he is finding his game he has a chance to catch a lot of people off guard.

I traveled with a buddy who is a UCLA alum to the game. He was pretty much pulling his hair out over Howland by the end.

From about the 8 minute mark in the first half until just under 17:30 in the second, UCLA, usually looking to get over 80, scored 5 points - two on Shabazz's uncontested dunk and one free throw plus one other basket. That is more than 10 minutes with one hoop. Mikael was a big part of that, so just remember that whatever you want to say about his offense, we can count on him for solid D minutes where we need them most.
Per kenpom we are #37, with AdjD ranked 27 I think.
Barclays is 'nice' but totally sterile.

You should have been the guy pulling out your hair.

Don't remember if it was this thread or not (probably wasn't) but I saw some recent comments complaining on the strength and conditioning part of our team, how nobody really looks stronger, loses needed weight, etc.
I noticed it the first few games, but it really just hit me last night: Markel is jacked this year. Loved the game from him last night, and he looks like he is in such good shape. Really strong looking upper body, and had some quick feet with his steals. Friend of mine who is not a Hoya fan told me today that he thought Markel looked like he could curl 100 lbs.
Also going back to someone else's comment, loved Lubick's game last night. Can't remember who it was to, but he had some pass that he lead so early because he just threw it so slow, but it was a perfectly timed backdoor. Great look.

The concern now becomes the big men on the bench. Looks like we really have nothing JTIII can pull from yet. Can we really play Nate at 5 and Otto at 4 against bigger teams with strong interior players. I think in those situations, like last night, we will have to play zone and hope to prevent the opposing guards from driving and dishing. There aren't going to be many teams bigger than UCLA was and it worked out fine. With Otto and Whitt's rebounding prowess I think we'll be fine. I also hope that the 4 games after Texas will allow us to work on our bench some more. Unfortunately Moses still looks lost and Hayes Raw. I'm hoping Hayes can catch up sooner rather than later. But I think we'll be fine with Nate at the 5 as long as we have Otto and Greg in the line up. Clearly going zone is also a solution for when Mikael isn't in the game. Hopkins reminds me of a shorter Elden Campbell. I think he needs another year to get stronger, he can't hold his position against bigger, stronger guys on defense. Defensively I think Moses is much better. He's alot stronger and can hold his spot without being backdowned. People also seem intimidated by his shot blocking presence. That one guy from either Duquense or Liberty drove into the paint on Moses and then saw Moses and threw up a 2 foot air ball. Problem is Moses still looks lost in the Princeton System on offense. On a conventional offense where he could just focus on rebounding on offense I think Moses would be playing alot more. Hopefully he can pick up the system this year, I'd like to have him for his big body, rebounding and defensive intimidation. It would add another dimension to this team.

if the espn box score from the UCLA-UGA game is correct, UCLA scored 60 pts and had 4 assists tonight. Muhammad with 21 pts band Adams 1-6 with 4 pts, apparently indicating a blown load for him.

I just became a UCLA fan when I was about 10, and still am. Except when they play Georgetown. When I was a GU student (which was during UCLA's championship heyday), my friends would ask me who I would root for if GU ever played UCLA, and my stock reply was, that will never happen.
