Nice bounce back for Jabril. . You thought he played badly in the previous two games? What I was thinking. He finally showed us a midrange jumper last game, hit a 3, played well on defense. I must be wearing those Hoya glasses again

Exactly thats why I hope Whit and every player in college be's smart on the court and not push that hard when you go for the ball b/c that can cause a serious injury thats all. Not to pick on you but really??? Greg isn't mr. Atlas, he is going to have to push, and everyone pushes, its how much till you get caught, like I said if he didn't fall over his own man it doesn't happen and you don't even bring this up. I understand what you are saying but like I said before the players push all the time but they never know when another player is going to fall beside the guy you push causing the guy you push take a horrible fall.I garrentee if it was the other way around and Whit got hurt they would be some angry hoya fans on here.

Just got back from Barclay's. What. A. Game.
A lot of guys grew up tonight, and the great thing about this win was that it was a total team effort. Goes without saying that tonight was Markel's best ever in a Hoya uniform, but Greg definitely looks like he's ready to step up and be the go-to #2 option for us on offense. Throw in continued improvement from Lubick in all facets of the game and Porter being Porter and you've got an impressive win over a very talented team, even if young.
Some may call it defensive lapses, and sure there were some during the course of the game, but I thought we did an extremely admirable job staying on them for 40 minutes. UCLA is a pretty athletic team and they have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but Coach has to be ecstatic with the number of blocks, steals and deflections that his defense put up tonight.
They beat us down the floor a few times in the first half, but once we got back on defense in transition consistently and stopped giving up fast break points, it became apparent our halfcourt offense was better than theirs. Great job utilizing the backdoor cuts tonight, especially when the offense was run through Lubick, Greg or Otto at the top. All three were on their game being the facilitator tonight.
Mikael will get the most grief from everyone on this board, and rightfully so. But aside from the last defensive possession of the 1st half where he gave up on the play (wonder if the coaches told him to do that to avoid the 3rd foul), he battled all night against a bigger, stronger frontcourt. He also had a huge putback late in the second half that kept UCLA at bay. Just has to be quicker in making decisions and avoid unnecessary turnovers, and I think that will improve as he continues to gain more experience.
Barclay's as a venue: pretty damn nice, I have to say. My first trip there, and I found it super easy to get there via subway. Arena is compact and traps in volume nicely, which is great when the Hoya faithful comes in droves and stays loud all night like they did tonight. Hope everyone shows up and does the same again tomorrow!
Great win Hoyas!

So as of this moment, GUHoyas.com has the UCLA game listed on the men's schedule as a 78-70 loss. Let's have a little faith fellas.

We must be the only fanbase in the universe that can take tonight's win and turn it into a discussion about whether one of our players committed a hard foul.

I think Mikael gets way too much flack. I thought he actually had a really good game. Yeah he had those 4 turnovers in the first half, but he had no turnovers in the second half, played good defense and had a good shooting game 3/5. He had a nice move in the post. While everyone was upset at that play at the end of the first where he didn't try to defend the shabazz dunk it was actually a really smart heads up play to not pick up his third foul there.

Mikael has to play the rest of the season like he did the second half: Be a garbage player.
Hustle. Get rebounds. Play defense. Get putbacks in the paint. Maybe make a move in the post here or there. Be a presence.
That's it. Do that, and he can be of value to this team.
Do what he did in the first half, sit him down. This team has two NBA players on the wings and a point guard who can score. Mikael, at this point in his career, should never try to force offense because his game isn't advanced enough for that yet.
I thought he played much better in the second half. But that's how he has to play this season to be effective. He's not a scorer yet. Maybe that will come next season, but it isn't there now. And frankly, with Otto, Greg, Markel and Jabril, anytime Mikael is trying to score, he's taking shots away from one of those four.
And that's what we don't want.

Nice game from all aspects. Really liked attacking a young, and lazy UCLA team with transition and getting offense out of the defense. Did an excellent job of exploiting mismatches and going at UCLA and guys played hard or sat (Smith Rivera sat as he should've during his bad defense in 2nd Half). Agree with Daytona--if Hopkins can play as he did in 2nd Half, that's huge step in right direction-took more time on a nice hookshot and favorite play was his hustle to loose/ball putback. Hustle plays from him were nice to see.
Excellent game from Markel Starks--aggressive and decisive and Nate too.
Porter/Whittington were 2 best players on the court.
Fun game to watch and love the Barclays Arena--comes off great on television and seeing Patrick and Ralph Dalton courtside always brings back great memories!
Creepy Crean and his Sweet 16 ring wearing Hoosiers up next. No coach in country that I despise as much as the PT Barnum of CBB.

When Dsr got his shot blocked in the 2nd half on a bad quick shot when Ucla was making a surge, Whittington started cussing him out, telling him to move the ball. Good leadership from Whittington..
["So, when Georgetown coach John Thompson III was asked whether he had said anything at halftime to inspire the impressive run, he offered a deadpan answer.
"Absolutely," Thompson said, to laughter, after the Hoyas' semifinal win in the Progressive Legends Classic at the Barclays Center. After the laughter subsided, Thompson said his halftime speeches usually are most effective when his players can beat him to the punch with their own suggestions.
This time, after UCLA had closed within 31-29 at halftime, Thompson said his players preached that they had to "get stops" and rebounds and "had to keep moving and keep cutting, get them chasing us," Thompson said.]

His second half was better simply by not asking him to do more than he can.

great win. we need to rebound better and take care of the ball. we blow them out if they don't get a few 3's off offensive rebounds. the player i'm probably the most impressed with is nate. i was critical of him last year. he's very active, making good decisions with the ball and playing very sound basketball.

Folks need to chill with the Mikael criticism. Coming off a nice win and facing the #1 team, you would think there would be more to talk about. Some of you aren't happy unless you get your bashing in. Kid is a sophomore and playing hard. It was Nate last year, now Mikael. Enjoy and give Thanks!!!

As has been typical in recent years, JTIII shortened up his bench against quality comp and played only 8 players, and none of our big men off the bench.
Hopkins is our big man horse this year, whether you like him or not.
He is a bit rough handling the ball in traffic - he clearly needs to take care of the ball better. He needs to firm up his grip on the ball in traffic and bring it down less frequently. And getting stripped once or twice by Wear at the top of the key in the first half is really inexcusable.
But I'm not as down on him as some. He is our weak link among the starters, but there are some positives.
First, he is noticeably bigger this year, which is nice. He's stronger and better able to bang. Also, he is very fast up and down the court as a big man and does not appear to tire out in a fast paced game. Kudos to Mikael for getting stronger and in better aerobic condition in the off-season. That hard work is already paying off. For example, in 3 consecutive games now, he was able to be beat the entire opposing defense down the floor on a sprint and receive a dime for a bucket. Impressive quality in your center.
After watching him at DeMatha, I was concerned about his motor and toughness. Last night, he gave out two very hard fouls that left Shabazz scratching his head and probably thinking twice about entering the lane again. I loved that. And as others have pointed out, the hustle rebound and put back was a key bucket as the game tightened.
Mikael is actually a very fluid athlete. When he's one-on-one and not in traffic, he is quite adept at dribbling, passing, posting up, and making a very quick spin move to create separation. The trouble has come when he executes these moves in traffic and brings the ball down below his shoulders.
One thing we haven't seen year is that I think there is a very consistent 8-12 foot jump shot in Mikael that we can exploit when playing against zone sets from middle of the lane and baseline.
Is he Patrick or Alonzo? No. But I think there is a very nice player to mold in Mikael. And when you surround him with stat sheet stuffers like Otto and Greg, I think we can mask the deficiencies pretty well.
The concern now becomes the big men on the bench. Looks like we really have nothing JTIII can pull from yet. Can we really play Nate at 5 and Otto at 4 against bigger teams with strong interior players. I think in those situations, like last night, we will have to play zone and hope to prevent the opposing guards from driving and dishing.

Very enjoyable game last night. UCLA is a very talented team that will be highly ranked all year. This will be a solid win for seeding at the end of the year. Props for the in game moves by JT3 in going to the zone an player substitutions. One of his best games.(only glitch was play after time out at end of 1st half where DSR walked ball up court with 20 seconds to play and did not get into a set) Great game from Markel. This is who I thought the Hoyas were getting last year. If he plays this way the rest of the way it will be an enjoyable season. Nate is a new man. I can't remember him being out of position in either of the two games seen on TV. The lost of weight and hard work over summer is really paying off. Whit and Porter remind me of the two 6'6" players Eddie Sutton had at Arkansas many years ago that took them to a final four.(brain cramp can't remember their names) I love Jabril and Whit's attitude, they are ferocious on defense and hard nosed on going to the basket for rebound. For the person who took up two pages talking about Whit's push of Ware, there was no intent to hurt only a fight for a rebound. Wares on player took his legs out from under him by his positioning. Had his teammate not been there he would not have fallen. Whit will take a few hard pushes himself over the course of the year, but I love the fact that as slight as he is, he is willing to mix it up with the bigs under the hoop. I too think Hopkins will eventually be a 4, but evidently JT3 has little faith in Moses,Hayes or Bolden right now. I hate that Tyler's health has caused him to miss 2 years of his career, if he has one at all. I really wanted to see the young man play. He and Hopkins would be a good tandem at the 5 position this year. Wasn't Adams and DSR on the same team last year?

I think in those situations, like last night, we will have to play zone and hope to prevent the opposing guards from driving and dishing. There aren't going to be many teams bigger than UCLA was and it worked out fine. With Otto and Whitt's rebounding prowess I think we'll be fine. I also hope that the 4 games after Texas will allow us to work on our bench some more. Unfortunately Moses still looks lost and Hayes Raw. I'm hoping Hayes can catch up sooner rather than later. But I think we'll be fine with Nate at the 5 as long as we have Otto and Greg in the line up. Clearly going zone is also a solution for when Mikael isn't in the game.

Good win. Congrats on guys stepping up, really impressive performance. And glad KAnderson flopped. I know his day will come but just a nice feeling to see him do squat last night.
Hope they can keep the momentum going. Really need another big man to get some quality minutes.
